QUOTE (The Critic @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:37 AM) I feel that too many umpires are hyper-sensitive control freaks who are itching to throw anyone who dares argue a call, no matter how bad that call may be. You see these guys who tear their mask off and/or glare at dugouts immediately when players complain about bad calls - all they're doing is drawing more attention to the call when they over-react to the players like that. I don't hold the players blameless in this at all, as there's also more histrionics and "showing up" from players than I've ever seen before, but too many umpires seem to have this idea that they are immune to scrutiny. If it were reasonably possible, I'd like for umps to have "umping averages" so people could see which ones call better games and who could use more schooling and/or minor league seasoning. That would never happen (even if there was a way to accurately grade them), but everyone else on the field can be scrutinized by trackable, performance-based numbers, so in a perfect world I'd like for the umps to be as well. It would also bring up an (excuse/reason) for teams to blame games on umpires...they'd just say "Hey look, he sucks at umping and it gets worse against so-and-so team." That said, there are umpire stats kept somewhere and if baseball teams don't scout the umps as well as players coming up, then they should.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:38 AM) Stopping at August 1st, in his last 168 games(going back to last year), he has put up a line of: .311, 41 HR, 106 RBI, 105 R, 3 SB. Best FA signing by the Sox ever? Oh yeah, I forgot Dye was an absolute stud from the second half on last year. His season last year is a perfect example as to why you don't give up on a hitter who has been good for, you know, like 10 years with perhaps another bad year mixed in there just because they struggle for a while battling injuries, especially at lowest value. I'm so damn glad the Red Sox didn't trade for him last year. And to answer the question, that is probably one of the best free agent signings of the past 10 or 15 years, everything considered.

Is it really that unrealistic to think that Beckham could become a 3Bman? That just seems like the logical jump to me, because if he moves from SS due to defense, it's because of his range and not of his throwing arm, and so long as his bat projects pretty well, he should move to 3B. I don't think that was necessarily the plan so much as just adding more athletes to the organization, but potentially being able to move him around anywhere in the infield is nice flexibility to have.

QUOTE (BobDylan @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 11:26 PM) People need to stop coming here when they're sober. Nothing is worse than hearing an asshole recount what he drank last night. Do you honestly think anyone cares how "f***ed up" you were? If you were so "f***ed up" tell me what happened. Tell me something funny, interesting. Not how many beers you had. Your drinking tolerance doesn't impress anyone. This thread has severely lost its luster. I'll try sometime this week. I always just come on here and start talking actual baseball s*** which is probably what I should be avoiding, though I make my point all the same.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:50 AM) No mention of 'The Beast'? Life's too short to drink s*** beer. Fork over the extra loot and get quality. Eh, Busch Light and Bud Light give me the same drunks, and I get 6 more Busch Lights for a dollar or two less. That's a lot of money one can save in a year with how much I drink, and if you drink even more, it's a lot more money you save.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:44 AM) BTW- what does everyone think of possibly bringing back Garland, at the right price? The price won't be right so I won't think about it.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 01:17 AM) Roberts Ramirez Quentin Dye Thome Pierzynski Swisher Fields Anderson I don't know, man. I wouldn't say that's a "pretty bad" lineup. That's definitely a lineup that could win a division if the pitching pitches like it did the 1st half of the season. I don't think you can count on that though.

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 01:13 AM) Yes I find it funny how our team, filled with established vets, is destined to go down the s***ter but the team made largely of unproven, untested unknowns is somehow just flat out better. They may very well beat us, but the writing isn't exactly on the wall. That's really how I feel and what I've been trying to get across but have failed to do so. Thank you.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:48 AM) Well then maybe, hopefully, that is the song he is speaking of. negative captain
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 11:43 PM) That's a pretty bad lineup. Swisher's offense is below average for a 1st baseman, and you know that Anderson will never get handed the starting spot in CF. I think Konerko could very easily be given the 1B job again next season.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 11:47 PM) Not that I want to see it, but I'd love to see them get that far up ahead again in 1st. Although, that is going to be very tough especially since every SP for Minnesota has an ERA under 4.3 (I think). Yeah, and every one of them is under 26 and by and large in their first full season as a starter in the majors. Slowey and Baker have thrown this amount of innings before (both in a combination of the majors and minors); however, Liriano has already thrown about 140 innings this season, hasn't thrown this many since 2005 in the minors (where he threw 167), and both Blackburn and Perkins will almost certainly eclipse their career high in innings. Constantly being on the road won't help either.

I am going to jackoff all over this board if the Sox are 4.5 games in first place, because I'll be able to rub it in Frankensteiner's face and because the Sox are 4.5 games in first place. Someone will probably have to keep me in check.

GO GARTH FLOYD

I meant Gavin and I have no idea why I put Havy. "3:30 in the morning, not a soul in sight" is a lyric from one of the greatest songs of all time.

AA just seems like young guys with decent stuff that don't know how to pitch; hitters with raw tools that don't know how to hit. AAA is the exact opposite, but said players are also more ready for MLB action. Those that completely dominate AAA for a while are those that you expect to atleast be good regulars in the majors.

I started an 8 game win streak so I figure I have the fingers to start a 12 game win streak. f*** it if the game isn't until Tuesday, I want dibs on it so I got dibs. Anyways, 3:30 in the morning, not a soul in sight...UNTIL THE WHITE SOX GOT TO TOWN AND BEAT THE s*** OUT OF THE TIGERS and the thunder rolls....and the thunder rolls. GO HAVY

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 07:51 AM) It certainly isnt a turtle without its shell. Turtles dont just fall out of their shells as if it was a backpack, they are connected. When i first started looking at it I thought it was really strange, but the more I look at it I think its a raccoon or something. The picture is decieving, the lower jaw is disconnected and the angle shown makes it look more like the bottom of a beak. The top part also looks like a beak, but its most likely the bones in the snout starting to poke through because of wear from being in the ocean. Some kids were on CNN showing the bones of the "monster". I think you can watch the video on cnn.com still QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 03:25 PM) If Jeff Corwin says he thinks its a racoon, like he has, then I tend to believe him. oh hey good call kyle

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) One of my worst nights ever came drinking gin and tonics. I guess I was puking by 10:30, but don't remember it. What I do remember is waking up the next morning and puking 4 times in about an hour before I had to go DJ at the campus radio station. Haven't touched a gin and tonic since, but I think I could be up for one again... yeah I had a buddy who had a night like that. We were the only two from our frat at another mixer, and so we just got a bottle of some kind of 80 proof Ron D Superior...we finished the bottle in an hour, and he had probably 2/3 of it...needless to say he didn't even remember going home, which was like a 2 block walk in icy conditions, let alone the next 3 hours where he was puking/passed out in a bathroom stall.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) Dont forget the Keystone. Or if you are really feeling frisky, Keystone Ice I believe in using the term "Keystone Ice" you meant to say "Black Death." That's how it's been referenced to me before. You can also go with Icehouse if you are frisky or Steel Reserve if suicidal, but I'd rather not puke off of 2 beers because of how bad they are and rather just drink 15 or so s***ty cheap beers that I can atleast tolerate.

just any straight up gin and tonic (or GNT's as we call them) will mess you up, doesn't even have to be Tanqueray

Yeah I don't think I want Getz at 2B next year...I want him in the majors sitting on the bench and playing 3B, SS, and 2B as a backup, but I don't want him starting. I also think people generally underestimate Mark Ellis...he's hitting .235 and has an OPS over .700, thanks to a .090 IsoOBP and a .140 IsoSLG. He gets on base and he gets extra base hits. If he hits even .260, you are looking at probably a .750-.775 OPS, and on top of it, he plays exceptional defense at 2B. Mentioned or not, the 3 players I'd be interested in are Hudson, Ellis, and Furcal, in that order, assuming Alexei can play a pretty damn good shortstop.

QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 04:43 PM) I have read everyones postings, and my main reason why I wrote what I did is that with the central race being as tight as it is, THIS IS NO TIME to go experimenting and waiting for a kid to grow. If you're 10 down or 10 up.....well, then go ahead. But we can't afford to lose games and get knocked around when we're in a title race this close. We need professionals that will give us our best chances. This is no time to go playing around with someone that is wet behind the ears. As far as his record in the minors goes..................well we went through this before with Felix Diaz 10-1 1:85 ERA, bring him up, gets shelled for 10 runs. Never to be seen again. Minors is just that.................... minors. THIS IS NO TIME FOR EXPERIMENTATION. I do believe in giving kids a chance,,,,,,,,,,,but as I already stated. NOT WHEN your in a division race this close and it already cost us 3 games. The Sox had to throw someone into the rotation with Count on the DL, it's not as if they just suddenly said "hey let's throw Richard into the rotation and see if we can find someone who will dominate the league and take a chance". Richard was the best option for the 6th man in the rotation, and he failed miserably...that's why I feel 100% that this team needs a 6th starter down the stretch, be it Paul Byrd or Miguel Batista with the Mariners eating a ton of the contract or whomever, because while this may be the Count's last DL stint, I doubt the Sox really want to stretch Danks' and Floyd's arms as much as they are on pace to do and so they could ultimately end up on the DL with a case of fatigue.
-
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 08:12 PM) Why do you say that? I'd assume because he figures the White Sox will call him up and put him in either the bullpen (which I would assume) or rotation. Having a lefty who can throw 97+ out of the bullpen can be pretty damn nice.

Skip Caray passed away. RIP.
