  1. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) Ha. Lets just say running in sandles in an ice storm = giant gash through your forehead. f***ing ice should get out of the way next time so as to not get hit by my head
  2. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 09:59 PM) True, but LaRoche will be back end of May. Not sure they want to do that...and if so, they probably won't give too much since they have Tony Abreu and Blake DeWitt to maybe take over for a few months. And then, what do you do when LaRoche and/or Garciaparra come back? Trade Crede to the next team that needs a 3Bman. Or have him be your starting shortstop or something crazy like that.
  3. And that's not to bring up the fact that Anderson could be an asset this year offensively too. If he puts up a .250/.320/.405, I'd have to believe that would almost assure him of being better offensively than Jerry Owens, along with twice the defense that Owens would give. If Ozzie starts the year with Anderson in CF, and Anderson responds well, I'm going to be feeling pretty good about this team.
  4. God is mad at me. Know how I know? I have a temp ranging anywhere from 101.5-103 (and it was 104 when I woke up today) on the universal day for drinking. Needless to say, I didn't drink today with a fever that high, nausea, body aches, cold sweats, chills, headache, congestion in both my nose and my chest, and fatigue. All I wanted was one green beer. I don't know if it would have stayed down though.
  5. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Mar 16, 2008 -> 11:32 PM) I have now had fifteen Budweisers, and I can type coherently. I drank tonight for two reasons. I have Monday (St. Patrick's Day off), and I also wanted to post on Soxtalk to show that it is indeed possible to type while being quite drunk. I understand that this makes me both a drunk and an internet geek, but I'm fine with that. this does not make you an internet geek, it makes you a complete liar because everyone and their mother knows that you can't type when drunk and this whole "everybody getting drunk thing"...yeah, it's fun
  6. QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 15, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) Sweeney's problem isn't mechanics, he's got a great swing... he just has weak forearms and wrists and can't get the bat around fast enough to hit the inside pitch with authority. Plus, I never said mechanics can't be fixed. I'm saying Brian Anderson sucks as a baseball player. That's a perfectly logical argument
  7. I bet Brian Anderson has a better year than Ryan Sweeney this year, based off of win shares.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) The he's only leading off once argument has zero legs because the dynamic of the lineup still stays the same. He will still hit in front of most of our RBI guys and will have low OBP weaker hitters in front of him no matter what. He will have less RBI opportunities than he would lower in the order. That's fine, because he'll have more opportunities to drive himself in throughout the year too.
  9. QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 06:59 PM) That couldn't be farther from the truth. I have no problem with pulling the ball. I am a natural pull hitter myself. However, I hate it when players consistently try to pull everything. I believe 100% in hitting the ball where it's pitched. If it's outside, go oppo or at least center. If it is down the middle, drive the ball to center or in the gap. And if it is inside, get those hands in and pull it. Pulling everything is where weak double play balls come in, key examples: A.J. Pierzynski, Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye from last year. And if you can get your hands out over the plate, you can take a pitch that's down the middle or even on the outer half of the plate and yank it over the fence. If it's a pitch in your zone, drill the f*** out of it. Quite frankly, if cheating can put a ball in the stands rather than the gap, by all means, cheat away. So what's the definition of suck? .700 OPS? .650 OPS? .725 OPS? That's a pretty broad term. You also have to factor in defense too, and what he loses offensively he makes up for defensively; according to the article iamshack loves posting, Anderson was one of the best defensive CFers the game has seen in a long time (or something to that extent). I don't know if I'd go that far with my own eyes, but if he's that good defensively, he could put up a .700 OPS and I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.
  10. I also think Jerry will make the team regardless of what happens, given that he's healthy. That doesn't mean he's starting, but what it likely means is that there will be a platoon in CF until one of Anderson and Owens can prove that they are worth starting full time (or if neither prove that, then both get sent down, Swish heads to CF, and Quentin gets called up). I imagine the Sox will take it easier with Quentin as he tries to get his shoulder healed up. Ozzie does love speed, and while it (possibly) seems as though he's recognizing that OBP is more important at the top of the order than a track star, he will want a guy that can steal bases somewhere on his team. Currently, I don't think anybody has proven they can steal at a proficient clip other than Owens, so it would be nice to have a speedster that can come into the game in the 8th inning or so and steal a base. Of course, he'll get thrown out now and then too, which would really suck, but s*** happens. That, and I think they'd like Quentin to just get regular ABs. He's not gonna get s*** just sitting on the bench. He'll be there as the 10th man in case any of Thome/PK/JD/Swish/BA has to take a trip on the DL at some point during the year. Or something like that.
  11. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) Some kids do drink cough medicine for the "high" effect. Tussin parties (not sure they actually exist, but we have joked about having one some time, where you just get loaded on tussin)
  12. QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 03:18 PM) I was avoiding that term, because it would not really be what I am thinking. I believe it should be more elevating some players to an even higher status. Perhaps a hundred players, maybe less. 2% of the Hall maybe? So are you suggesting like Clemens, Bonds, McGwire, etc, are Hall of Fame deserving, but some players, such as Ruth, Aaron, Mays (and from this era, Pedro, Maddux, Henderson, perhaps Griffey) are more deserving of like a Hall of Immortality or something such as that?
  13. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) Right, and his decreased RBIs could be made up by Thome, PK and Dye having more runners on base than if say Owens doesn't commit to increasing his OBP Or by himself too
  14. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) Put the same warning on the pack/bag of pot. Lots and lots of things can make you too messed up to drive. Can they do breathalyser tests for sleeping pills? pain killers? cough medicine? Sleep deprivation is probably the most overlooked driving impairment of all.
  15. QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) I think there is time to adjust how the HoF is run. I have not worked out the details in my mind, so of anyone really wants to take my halfbaked idea and poke holes in it, it would be easy so I'm not even going to bother defending. but There needs to be a space for Rose, Bonds, Mark, while keeping the rest of the HoF "clean". Baseball should implement a Hall of Shame; I mean, atleast you get your own wing and a plaque and all that stuff
  16. QUOTE(joeynach @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) True the OBP is huge, but Swish in the leadoff spot is a waste of his talent. Im assuming part of the reason his OBP and power numbers are what they are is because he was hitting in the middle of a lineup, usually with runner on base head of him. That changes everything. I dont think you make him leadoff and expect 25 HRS and .380 OBP by defualt, I think you could expect that if he was hitting 5th or 6th, but leadoff is a waste of his power and ability to drive in runs. He's only leading off once a game. I really don't think it's that big of a deal. Hell, there will be a lot of games where Thome leads off an inning more than Swisher. Is that really that big of a deal?
  17. QUOTE(soxwon @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:14 PM) 7-8 AT THE MOST FOR SOX STARTERS Not sure how you can say that; Contreras is almost sure to take a DL stint, one of Floyd and Danks is likely to flop this year, and if one of those two do, one of the replacements is like to flop as well. I'd say over/under at 10.5 or 11.5 is probably pretty good.
  18. QUOTE(pcullotta @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) Anderson 2006 - 365 AB's, .225 Avg, .290 Obp, .359 Slg, 8 HR, 33 Rbi, 4 SB, 7 CS Owens 2007 - 356 AB's, .267 Avg, .324 Obp, .312 Slg, 1 HR, 17 Rbi, 32 SB *, 8 CS * 8th in the AL in SB in 93 games If Owens is healthy, I would rather have him on the team. To me , it would be nice to have one guy on the team who can steal a base whenever he gets on. It just puts more pressure on whoever is pitching when a speed guy like Owens is on base. Also, factor in how each player finished. Anderson hit .200 with an Obp of .235 in the last month of 2006. That doesn't exactly leave most people wanting more (especially when you include his awful, albeit brief start to 2007). Owens hit .340 with an Obp of .396 and 10 SB's in the last month of 2007. If you were the manager, you wouldn't be slightly excited by what a healthy Owens could bring to the table? That is Anderson from 2006. This is Anderson from 2008. I wouldn't want Paul Konerko from 2003 on this team either, but players can change, adjust, and perform better. Anderson appears to be doing that right now. Clearly, Anderson has superior talent; he may be the best all around athlete in White Sox camp right now. If he can produce well at the major league level, there's no way he isn't the starter. He could be probably a top 10 centerfielder in the game with his talent. Owens will almost always be below average because of a weak arm, range that depends entirely upon his speed, and no power whatsoever.
  19. I think if you read within the lines, that's also Ozzie giving the company line. Jerry's worked his ass off, and I'm sure Ozzie likes him as a person and perhaps even as a player, but even he understands his limitations.
  20. QUOTE(CryptviLL @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 10:01 PM) pot is healthy That I disagree with
  21. being drunk rawks and I say that because it actually does rawk...I have only had one beer tonight, and drove a friend who had his 21st home tonight from the bars at 2:15.
  22. QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 10:40 PM) Contracts always go up. There will be guys signing in two years for more money with less skills. Contracts don't always go up. They started going up at the beginning of revenue sharing and when Soriano signed his megadeal with the Cubs. Nearly the entire 2005 roster was based off of that. Iguchi now a days probably would have gotten a 3 year deal worth like $6-8 mill per, and possibly more depending on how much they hyped him coming over. Dye could have easily gotten $8+ mill a year over a 3-4 year deal. El Duque almost assuredly would have gotten around $8 mill for 2005 in today's market, and with a 3.30 ERA in his previous year - even in 80 or so innings - that could have been a $10 mill deal for 1 year. Jason Marquis got $20 mill over 3 years for putting up an ERA of 6! And that market was down from about the 1997-2003 era when Mike Hampton and Denny Neagle were signing super mega deals. Generally, prices go up over time, but depending upon the market, they don't always go up. That being said, I don't necessarily see Rowand's signing as an albatross of a deal; it's just one he won't statistically live up to because of the park he's in. I think he'll struggle to hit 15 homers this year.
  23. There are a few who pretty much drilled this on the head. It's actually a good strategic move, though when you get down to thinking about it, it's pretty simple. And as for Garland going for Cabrera...it's looking like a s*** deal now, but the one plus, if you want to consider it that, is that with a season similar to last year, Cabrera will be a type A free agent; Garland would have to have like a 2005 type season to be a type A free agent. Also with that, Cabrera can also be resigned at a decent price, whereas Garland would probably cost 5-6 years at $15+ mill a year.
