I've reserved a room in the local hospital for you. I figure you'll find that more useful than a hotel room.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) Where are they going to go? It's very unusual to make a trade at this time of the year. It's unusual to make a big trade this time of year. It's perfectly normal to trade a player who is blocking another player at a position. The Sox dealt for Cintron two years ago and dealt for Timo in 2004. Trades happen quite a bit in Spring Training. Any trade involving Crede will be pretty minor.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) Owens hasn't sucked anywhere near as bad as Gonzalez IMO. For whatever it's worth, which isn't really a whole lot, Owens's OPS has been above .800 most of this spring, if not all of it. He hasn't been drawing many walks though. I'm not about to disagree that Owens has sucked less than Gonzalez. He's still sucked. That's the entire argument. And if he can hit .360 during the course of the year, that'd be amazing; that's why his OPS is over .800, not because he's hitting with much power. If you hit .360, that generally means more balls are finding the gap than normal, and you are going to get more extra bases out of it. Whoop-dee-s***. I'd bet about everything I'm worth that he's not going to hit .360 during the season seeing as how only 3 players in the AL have done so over the past 10 years.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 06:31 AM) bwahaha overrated by who? Ozzie I guess. But how can you be overrated when so many people are saying you suck? By White Sox upper management (which includes Ozzie and the coaching staff). Those are the only people that do overrate him, and they are the people in charge of personnel decisions, which is why I'm a bit upset about the entire situation. And he's overrated because, as a big leaguer, he HAS sucked and yet he's essentially been handed the leadoff spot given that he can produce a clean bill of health. He's worked his ass off, surely, but Andy Gonzalez worked his ass off too and he was DFA'ed and picked up by Cleveland in the offseason. That is why he's overrated, and that's why I'm a bit flustered by this whole situation. If Owens had shown any type of power whatsoever to this point in his career, I wouldn't be nearly as upset about the situation, because then the Sox would have a great situation to deal with here. As it is, the best player between Owens and Anderson is likely to ride the bench/be sent to AAA/be dealt.

QUOTE(knightni @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 11:08 PM) Trick question. If opening day's final score is 2-1, Hawk will say a. If it is 10-9, he will say b. No he won't. If it's 10-9, he won't mention either

QUOTE(iamshack @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 02:15 AM) I couldn't agree with you more, but it seems as though Ozzie simply does not agree with us. I think our only hope now is that Kenny (and perhaps some other coaches) intervene on Brian's behalf (during this supposed meeting scheduled for Tuesday) and they convince Ozzie to slot BA in as the starting CF. Otherwise, I'll be hoping for an Jerry Owens groin tweak or for BA to simply take the job from Owens via taking the most advantage of his sparing playing time... That may be how it has to be. That, or hope that Owens flat out sucks in April. I really would love Anderson in CF, even if it means an unconventional lineup, because with Anderson in CF, a ton of pieces for this team fall into place. If Owens is in CF, I'm not a huge fan of the team.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 09:55 PM) Well I don't hang off the words of sabermetric geeks that put no stock whatsoever into stolen bases if that's what you mean. You can say that he can't be considered a "good hitter" in spite of his .320 average I guess, but any sabermetric guru worth his salt should be able to see the value of a guy with a OBP in the high .300s and who runs really fast. Even a world track speed star can generally only get from 1st to 3rd on a single. And a lot of the time, even slow players can get from 2nd to home on a single. That's what that extra base does. Jerry Owens is overrated and should be a 4th OFer at best, and while his speed is nice, it labels him as a leadoff hitter in Ozzie's mind for some reason.

QUOTE(forrestg @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 09:03 PM) Overreacting ?Wasn't weak hitting Dye's m.o. last season. His weak hitting lasted until August or september. He brought it up to some decent level by the end of the season. Yes you're overreacting. It's f***ing spring training. Don't worry about it and take numbers with a grain of salt.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 12:40 AM) If Owens was hitting .320, we could assume his OBP would be like .370 or .380, and he'd be stealing about 70 bases and scoring 100 runs depending on the 3-4-5. Obviously he would be no Ichiro but I know of no sane person that would call him an "offensive liability" just because his OPS is in the low .700s. You must believe Bill James to be insane then. It's also why I prefaced my statement with the word technically.

QUOTE(GreenSox @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 09:14 AM) Ellis can't hit. The Sox don't need yet another bad offensive player. career 100 OPS+, 110 OPS+ last year Ellis is easily a top 10 2Bman in the league

QUOTE(ottawa_sox @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 08:43 PM) I seem to remember Owens coming into baseball pretty late in life, so his current age is misleading. He is still inexperienced and has more upside than your average 27 year old. It wouldn't surprise me if he took his game to another level and made the 'some that could make the case' look pretty dumb. He finished off pretty strong last year for someone who 'can't hit'. Personally, I am rooting for Brian Anderson and Jerry Owens. But his upside really isn't that much more than the average 27 year old. A lot of the upside he would have as a 22 year old would be filling into his body; as a 27 year old, he has completely filled in. Jerry Owens could hit .320 and be technically considered an offensive liability. That's how little power he has.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 12:27 AM) I doubt it. Their owner is rich and is more than willing to spend. I remember reading a couple of years ago that he believes there is no reason they can't become the Yankees and after winning a bunch of Stanley Cups (this was during the strike), he wanted to bring back baseball in Detroit permanently and would do it by any means necessary. This won't handicap Detroit at all. I seem to recall seeing that the Tigers payroll is nearing $140-150 mill; even the Yankees had to level it off at about $200-220 mill because they are also paying revenue sharing and luxury tax. I wouldn't be surprised if the Tigers are almost spending $170-$180 mill this year because of it. Eventually, it will catch up to them. It catches up to every team. -

My opinion of Joakim Noah is that he's perhaps the ugliest person I've ever seen in my life, and he's a terrible dancer to boot.

I read through hearsay that he asked for Votto and Bailey from the Reds. Beane is f***ing ridiculous sometimes.

QUOTE(Want2Repeat @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 03:32 PM) I would tend to give Floyd the benefit of the doubt if he actually had a track record of success. His only real success was last year in a few games vs. Detroit, when they had a depleted lineup. What we are seeing from him is what he has always displayed. It just bothers me that Kenny is putting so much faith in 2 pitchers who have never proven anything and one who had a really bad year last year. The fact that we can't seem to produce runs again is also bothersome. I guess this is just my spring panic, but I don't want to see what we saw last year. Floyd had a 3.19 ERA in September last year, and 6 of his 10 starts were quality starts. I'm not debating anything, because any and all can have their own opinions of Floyd, but he wasn't as bad as a few people seem to remember him being. He didn't pitch give up 5 homers every game. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) Gavin as our 5th starter is going to be a huge mistake. He stunk it up in Philly (I've seen about 95% of his starts/appearances with Philly) and still hasn't even improved from that. I hope our 5th starter isn't on the team yet because if so, it's going to be a long season every 5th day. You know, I know Gavin Floyd ran over your dog, but the only reason you come on here is to knock him. Not sure there's anything wrong with that, except that you have some sort of weird obsession with Floyd. -
If it's a private bathroom in a place I do not care for while I'm slightly intoxicated, I stand in front of the urinal, take 2 steps to either the left or the right, and do a little dance while letting it flow. I'm not much of an aimer.

I think you can live with one below-average to average defender at one of those positions. AJ Pierzysnki has never been mr. dependable behind the plate defensively, and Iguchi was rather average defensively in 2005, perhaps slightly above. Right now, if the Sox enter the season with Anderson in CF, they'll have very good defense at probably the two most crucial positions on the field, AJ dicking around behind the plate, Fields(/Crede) at 3B, and whoever the hell at 2B. That would be fine by me. -
I heard that Jerry Owens pushes kids in wheelchairs over and knocks old people down in the middle of the street.

My only bold prediction for this season is that the Jays win the AL East.
