QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 10:20 AM) Will the sun still rise for you, Balta, if Jose Canseco outs Alex Rodriguez as a steroid user (as he teased)? Or George Mitchell does (as is possible)? Or a pharmaceutical investigation (as is also possible)? I'm, partly, teasing because you hold out this hope that Rodriguez will be the great Knight rescuing The Crown from the usurping Barry Bonds and I don't know how true that is. In fact, I'd bet it isn't all that true, mainly because of the era that A-Rah plays in but also because of what my own eyes, gut instinct and Rodriguez' rapid numbers tell me, but I know a lot of people, here and in real life, who think of A-Rah as this clean slugger who will restore honor and integrity to the Diamond and I don't think that's true. Besides, I'm wary of projecting anyone to break any records because of Griffey. Baseball lost integrity and "honor" long ago. If we define "integrity and honor" as "not using 'performance enhancing drugs'". Agreed with this, and it brings up a question to think about; of the people in the past 10-15 years who hit 45-50+ homers in a season, how many of them to people realistically think were clean? I imagine Howard, Thome, and Griffey are, possibly Andruw Jones, Papi, and Beltre...it's just an intriguing question. Further, of the guys who hit, say, 57+ (just to get a certain someone into the discussion), how many of those players were clean? Howard fits, but he's about the only one I can imagine was. Clearly, the entire era is tarnished; ARod is apart of this era; thus, ARod is tarnished, no matter what he does.

QUOTE(joeynach @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 12:04 PM) I would take Bill Hall, but im not sure yet which was the fluke his .270 Avg from 06 or his .254 Avg from 07. If its Garland for Hall + Prospects Im in on it, but I dont think we need that 3B prospect. We still have Crede and Fields we dont need to keep log jamming players and forcing them to play out of position. First, Hall put up an .837 OPS in 2005; he should be good enough. Secondly, you aren't going to get Hall and a prospect for Garland. Possibly Hall straight up for Garland, but I tend to doubt that.

QUOTE(Lemon_44 @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 05:51 PM) Sizemore was always considered a can't miss prospect and probably more highly thought of than Hart so i don't think it's a terrible comparison. Plus, who cares if Hart tore the cover off the ball last year. One year doesn't mean a whole lot. There's plenty of guys who have lit it up their rookie and then struggled. I don't think that will be the case with Hart but just because he did it one year at the major league level doesn't prove a thing yet. I think it's a viable comparison because they were/are young 5 tool prospects that can be moved for the right starting pitching. As stated before; Sizemore was in A ball and had a sub .700 OPS at the time he was dealt. Hart killed the ball in the majors last year. It's a terrible comparison, I don't care how highly thought of Sizemore was.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 06:50 PM) I don't believe he will get a 1-year deal. His first 10 years are that of a HOFer. He's clearly worth a multiple year commitment. He's earned more than that. However, his poor season has caused his stock to slip such that, in a recent informal survey, 14 of 15 GMs said they'd prefer Torii Hunter. He can sign a long term deal at $.75 on the dollar compared to what he would have gotten at this point last year, or he can take a 1-year deal, believing he will rebound, in an attempt to cash in at $1.10 on the dollar compared to what he would have gotten last year. There's a chance that Boras will find a single team willing to see that one poor season does not a career make, and all it takes is 1. But without multiple big bidders he's not going to get near what he would have a year ago, making a 1-year year deal an attractive opportunity for both sides. It's a possibility that can't be outright ignored based on Boras' reputation. I cited Millwood (on the good) and Weaver (on the bad) as two recent Boras clients who went that route. I believe there's a good chance that Jones will join them. You are bringing up really good stuff here; I just would be shocked at a 1-year deal. Currently, I think what may happen is that Jones will sign a JD Drew type deal, allowing him to opt out of it after 2 years if he starts playing better and the market stays the same/improves, thus allowing him to once again earn more money. If this past year somehow becomes the trend rather than the outlier, then he's making more money than he could get on the open market anyways. I agree there will be some type of short-term commitment, I'm just not sure it will be 1 year.

Seriously, Hill, Marmol, and Soto/Pie looks like a really good trade for both teams.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 06:10 PM) I'll bet right now KW is giving his very best sales pitch in trying to get Hunter to take 4/$52. No way do the Sox offer up $ 70 mil. for Hunter and there's no reason they should. After Hunter goes to Texas or someplace for 5/70 then KW will go to work on ARow. He'll try to get him for 3/$28.5 , dude, Hunter isn't going anywhere for 5/70; he might very well come to Chicago for 6/90 or something, but 5/70 is merely a preliminary offer
-
Why do people think Jones is going to get a 1 year deal? This is the same agent that got Magglio Ordonez a 5 year, $75 mill deal with escalator clauses to bring it up to a 7 year, $105 mill deal when Magglio's career was in jeopardy. I don't foresee Andruw Jones getting a 1 year deal, but perhaps that's just me.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 05:59 PM) If Hunter told Williams on Sunday that all he wanted was 5/$70 and he'd sign with the Sox, he'd already be donning a Sox cap and the Sox would probably be holding a press conference tomorrow. Vernon Wells got $120 million+, ditto Soriano and C-Lee got $100 on the dot. I can't believe for a second that Torii is ready to sign for $70 million. Quite frankly, $70 mill is an insult of an offer to Hunter.

Well, they drank Budweiser, that's their problem in the first place. I'd get pissed too if that's all I had to drink.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 12:03 PM) Let's say the Sox sign Hunter and give up Garland, Fields and Gio for Cabrera. Does that make them a playoff team ? Owens in left, Uribe at SS and Richar at 2b ? Let's say the offense is fine overall. So I guess Crede just gets to sit on the bench and play with his dick

I don't care if adding Miggy does make the Sox a winning team next year or not; if you can add a hitter that good, and potentially keep him for 10 years, you get him and keep him and don't care what you give up or how good/bad you are the next year. The Sox only have one arm that could make a huge impact on the team long-term in the minors, and even he may be merely a reliever at the best. If it takes Fields, Gio, and DSL for Cabrera (or something similar, perhaps including a AAAA reliever in that deal as well), you do it.

QUOTE(Lemon_44 @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 12:00 PM) Why not? They need pitching and have a surplus of bats. Why did Grady Sizemore get traded to Cleveland? Young talent gets moved all the time for pitching. Sizemore was traded when he was 19, putting up a sub .700 OPS in A-ball. Corey Hart killed the ball at the MLB level last year. That's a terrible comparison.
