QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 03:49 PM) I don't think there are many on this website who were even born then. I was there with my dad and younger brother on the 3rd base side at Old Comiskey. WSI has a good article about it on their page and comments after that will bring back memeories. Why could they not play the second game? I was only 7 at the time, it's foggy to me, although I remember it vaguely -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) Thorne is an energetic announcer that has very limited knowledge about baseball. Anything interesting to report from our guys?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) Twins have an amazing approach vs Buehrle today. If it's in, pull. If it's out, go with it (there has to be a sexual joke somewhere in there) You have to wonder if they are stealing the signs again ala a few years ago, or at least getting a good read on him tipping his pitches... -

What are the chances of us getting 1 of 2 this weekend? I say less than 10%. Almost guaranteed sweep, and no reason to think so other than the fact we have a mental block in this place -

I would like to propose a toast: Here's to the new stadium the Twins will be moving into in 2010. Their biggest advantage will be taken away from them at that stage. I don't anyway they are going to be the same team in that ballpark....they just have a horse shoe up their ass in the Rollerdome against us and pretty much the entire league and have had that since the mid 80's -

Not sure why Hawk is getting so excited. Nathan will close us down 1-2-3 in the 9th -

This reminds me of game 1 we lost last year in the 3 game series in September. As I recall, it was a 5-4 game? Basically where we should've won it but basically handed it to the Twinkies and they went on to sweep. After Nathan shuts us down in the 9th, I'll be THRILLED with one win this weekend. -

Is there a WORSE manager in baseball in terms of decision making with his pitchers than Ozzie? I mean, seriously. Think about the Cubs game where he left Liney in after giving up the 3 run homer to Lee. It's absolutely disgusting, everyone in the world walks Mauer there, no brainer decision. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:54 PM) If Mauer becomes a free agent after next year, the White Sox should offer everything including the kitchen sink for him. Let Flowers play first or DH. And to think the Twins picked him because they didn't want to spend the $$$ that Mark Prior was looking for! Wow, they lucked out on that one... -

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:50 PM) I've been calling him Meathead for years. He should be at a high school football game cheering for a kids he has no connection with, but because he played there 20 years ago, still feels loyalty. Classic! -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:36 PM) I'm calling bulls*** with the tentativeness thing. He got squeezed mightily against Span, and then he didn't give in to two of the best hitters in baseball on a 3-2 count. Kubel always destroys the Sox, so that's nothing new. I think it's pretty pathetic by Hawk to go nuts on Danks like this and call him out. I agree with this 100%. It's total bush league for Hawk to think he KNOWS what was going on in Dank's head. John has shown he's got balls time and time again during his time in a White Sox uniform and I don't think this game scares him. He wasn't in game 163 last year, so its doubtful he was here...BS by Hawk, who is being a baby with the bad first inning -

Has anyone seen someone start a game with 4 STRAIGHT WALKS? I have never seen that before in 25 yrs of watching baseball... -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 05:15 PM) Gotta imagine guys like Thornton and Peña would be options first. No way do I see us giving away Alexie for anyone really unless the deal is just unbelievable. Yes, his D has been poor at times this year at SS but to have a guy who can put up these kind of numbers for $1M a year is a huge $ saver, and it provides you with some flexibility to sign other players at other spots while staying within the $ number given by management. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 05:14 PM) I like Nix so much better as an infielder. More than Getz actually, if Nix could actually hit (he hasn't really proved he can't FWIW). Agreed, there is no reason for him to be out there, even as bad as BA has been. It appears as if the writing is on the wall though with BA. I just don't want to think how bad our D would be without him out there, especially in the late innings, if he is not on this club down the stretch.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 01:47 PM) Our team is still in the race and CQ has been out for most of the year...getting him back is going to be large. The question becomes how LONG do we get him back before he gets hurt again? You know it will happen....I almost guarantee it unfortunately. -
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 11:02 PM) You realize that ST doesn't equal the major's correct. There have been a lot of guys who are ST hall of famers in the Cactus League due to the fact that breaking pitches don't have depth in the Valley. He went to the Southern League, which is a pitching rich league and faced some good prospects in a large baseball park. If he was ready based on his ST numbers, then Brian Anderson and Ryan Sweeney are headed to the hall of fame as perennial guys who rock the straight pitch in the valley. I like Gordon down in the lineup. It gives a flow through our lineup, and allows it to score consistently. For years, we have had a heavy top lineup, then nothing at the end. Let him sit at the bottom of the lineup and keep the runs a flowing. Yes, I realize that. However, my point is this guy is SPECIAL, and anyone could see that. Even above the Ryan Sweeney's and BA's who did well in ST. His short compact stroke along with his natural talent is completely different from what we've seen before. I am sorry, but to compare him to Sweeney or BA when they were coming up is a joke- this guy is heads and shoulders ahead of those clowns.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) While I really appreciate what The Count is doing for us, I think an extensions is out of the question, if anything a trade is more likely. KW and Ozzie are working to establish a young pitching core and I don’t think Contreras fits into those plans long-term even as a 5. I am just wondering who our #5 is next year...if he pitches like this through the rest of the season he will definitely garner quite a bit of interest for a 1 or 2 yr deal from a lot of teams....
-
With all of the abuse we've given him over the past 2 yrs, I think it's appropriate to step up here and say what a professional this guy has been. In an era of "I got paid" mentality, Jose has worked extremely hard to become an extremely talented starter again. Good for him, and hats off to Jose for not just taking his $10M as most athletes would have done in his situation. He's truly a role model from that standpoint. On another note, should KW consider extending him for a few M per while we have an opportunity? If he continues to pitch like this, my guess is some team will give him a 2 yr deal for $5M + per on a flyer if not more? Maybe Jose will do a hometown discount for us knowing he didn't earn his pay the last few years?

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 10:28 PM) Yes, I think it made a difference. It helps confidence a lot too because AA is the first time that you get to really see pitching thats pretty close to major league quality. Once you know you can hit that kind of pitching, you will be confident that you can do it again. He did hit some major league pitching in ST, but you have to take into account that 1) there's a lot of rust in those pitches and 2) in ST, pitchers just try to get a feel for their pitches and take specific orders from their coaches, not necessarily to always get guys out and win games. I understand the point, but I don't buy this argument for ONE SECOND. He was good enough to play April 6th and proved it in ST.
-
QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 09:59 PM) Developmentally it would have been a huge mistake to start Gordon Beckham in the majors straight out of ST. If someone is ready, does it matter? Do you think that extra 2 months in AA helped him at all? No, it didn't. He struggled when coming up just as he would've in April. He's a stud and he is ready. Period.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 09:05 PM) You have to wonder if we'll see Beckham batting 2nd tomorrow. With his ability to serve the ball to the right side, is he our #2 hitter of the future ala Robin Yount? Otherwise seems like a #5 or 6 to me when he hits his prime. It certainly would be ironic to see him in the 2 hole tomorrow....
-
QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) You got me. Damn. I am NOT complaining! However, when we see something good, like we all knew in ST, why put it back into AA?? Pointless. I don't want us to be making the same mistakes, that's all. I think KW has this team very well situated for a second half run....

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 06:44 PM) Gordon Beckham is not Frank Thomas, and won't come near to being the hitter Frank was. No, he won't but he's the guy I've been most excited about SINCE Frank.
