Who’s the sixth? Seager, Story, Correa, Baez and Semien…
-
There’s no hill. You guys have lost your minds if you think the best way to get someone off the books is to bench him. There are two choices. 1) Play him until he comes out of it again…looking for the most favorable match-ups. 2) Trade him…include Gore, Weathers, Hassell, Abrams (unlikely, as he’s out for the year), Morejon (same), Campusano, etc., to get it done. They had an opportunity to trade Wil Myers coming off last season and didn’t do it. If they can actually get a Scherzer or Gallo or whoever, and dump at least $20-25 of Hosmer’s $59 million remaining, they’ll probably do it…but it’s going to be for a big name that really shakes up the NL West. They also have Clevinger back next season, and who knows what’s going on with Lamet.
-
Good luck. They’re going to ask for Vaughn, Kopech and/or Crochet. He’s not even a player of need unless we’re dumping Madrigal at 50-75 cents on the dollar. Putting him at 2B just opens another huge hole in the lineup and/or future rotation. And the Sox are never going to pay $225-250 million to keep him after next season, anyway. Likely no team will put together an attractive enough package to entice Washington. This goes into the offseason or next trade deadline.

Way off again. He might be traded to free up payroll space, but he’s not going to the bench. The Padres, whose hunt for talent knows no positional bounds, could also pursue Scherzer, though the belief is they would only do so were they able to move money. For teams butting up against the $210 million luxury-tax threshold, he would cost a prorated portion of his $28.7 million tax number. San Diego has multiple options to shed money. The Padres have approached teams about dealing Eric Hosmer, who has four years and $59 million remaining on his deal after this season. He has a 10-team no-trade clause this year, and after the 2022 season, he would receive full no-trade protection as a player with 10 years in the major leagues and five with the same team, adding urgency to San Diego's desire to move him. Whether San Diego finds a match depends on its willingness to attach a top prospect. General manager A.J. Preller has long coveted Gallo, the 27-year-old slugger who

A deal with Hosmer going to Texas and Gallo to San Diego is a possibility, though it almost certainly would necessitate the inclusion of shortstop C.J. Abrams or outfielder Robert Hassell, considered in the industry as the Padres' two best prospects. Pitcher MacKenzie Gore also could be in play in a deal for Gallo, Scherzer or another player as San Diego looks to gain ground on the first-place San Francisco Giants and second-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the cutthroat National League West. https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/31895818/mlb-trade-deadline-surprising-teams-go-all-new-names-watch-july-30-nears

Narvaez? Bassitt?Semien and Escobar. -
Well, Stone just said he was going to the outfield and Benetti wondered how/why they would replace Cronenworth at second. Apparently it’s now a crime to be knowledgeable about other teams in baseball. We could talk about the Twins, Tigers, Indians and Royals, I watch a lot of their games, too. It’s called MLB.tv. Heaven forbid the extent of trade analysis here is that Frazier is replacing Hosmer, because….fWAR trumps all. Why do you have Puig in your name? Shouldn’t you be on the Mexican League discussion board?
-
The argument was that Frazier was acquired specifically to bench (and later trade) Hosmer. Which was simply based on Hosmer’s fWAR. Which we spent the last year or so arguing that there were other intangibles (mostly Madrigal threads) that couldn’t accurately be measured. Then an article came out about a possible Hosmer trade/salary dump…which everyone pretty much laughed off. So I’m thinking that the forest has been lost for the trees, because they’re going to mix and match that lineup every game to fit Frazier, Pham, Myers, Hosmer and Profar/Kim into the best possible match-ups for four lineup slots on a pitcher by pitcher basis…but mot specifically just bench one player in Hosmer based on his fWAR. That’s it. One will be right, one will be wrong.
-
He’s actually closer to Madrigal with questionable ability to play SS everyday but a lot more positional versatility and pop…but mostly XB hitter as currently projected. Also a more refined player than Jose on the defensive side (hard to compare because completely different stages of development). To me, he’s a taller Luis Urias, who was traded for Grisham… https://www.mlb.com/prospects/pirates/ You can read the more comprehensive write up here if you click on his name. Placed as #7 prospect with Pirates, who have a deeper system but not nearly the top end talent. Ironically, he will eventually take bats away from Newman, who used to be a pretty highly touted middle infielder. But sometimes these under the radar types really take off.
-
RayRay was so bold to come out and criticize the Hosmer contract, yet after after three opportunities…wouldn’t even commit to agreeing Hosmer would be benched 10 or more games. He did somehow claim to be the source of a rumor at MLBTradeRumors…yet there was another article out there from a somewhat more credible source speculating Hosmer was going to be traded. Interesting stuff. In the end, the Padres are going to go out and get at least one starting pitcher and at least one reliever. And Hosmer will neither be traded nor benched.
-
Sean Rodriguez? The Pirates’ reliever?
-
More like a large mouth bass.
-
The same reason they didn’t with Myers, and the same reason JR and KW and Hahn kept sending Danks out there. Hoping for a rebound to previous career norms. Simple as that. If the Padres cut Tommy Pham 6 weeks into the season, or the Rangers with Gallo…they would be looking like complete idiots, right? Not to mention how will sitting a player you might be showcasing for a trade help to increase his value in any way, shape or form? It’s also the same reason we’re not benching Keuchel, for example.
-
Because Fangraphs fWAR statistics determines everything in life. You forgot to mention how difficult it is to have a super high fWAR at 1B. For example, Mancini and Abreu are 8th and 9th at 1B in all of MLB at the position but only have 1.7 fWARs. Wow, that’s really not that impressive, a difference of just 2.1. Lo and behold, Jose Abreu is just 70th out of 137, barely an average qualified player. Ron was actually right?
-
Once again, give me a number how many games he will be benched for over the remainder of the season if you’re so confident? Preller would have to subsidize 50-60% of his salary, and that’s just not going to happen.
-
They’re not going to trade Hosmer, just like they didn’t trade Wil Myers when he put up MVP numbers for much of last season.
-
Sure, pal. I’m sure they have nothing better to do than read SoxTalk for predictions about what the Padres will do. Profar=.538 OPS vs. lefties Kim=.569 OPS vs. righties Myers=.670 OPS vs. lefties Hosmer=.699 OPS vs. righties Pham also has a decided split in his numbers. Frazier, .850 vs. lefties and .830 vs. righties Conclusion=Grisham, Tatis, Machado and Cronenworth will play almost everyday from here on out, with Frazier taking or rotating time with four regulars, and Ha Seong Kim basically losing all of his playing opportunities for the remainder of this season.

Seems like a daily debate in Seattle these days…
-
Have they announced the plan between Jimenez and Vaughn yet? At least for tonight’s game?
-
When's the last time Gallo played third regularly?

Someone saw a Sox scout at Mariners game thread
