There’s zero reason to leave Goodwin in the game defensively. If the reason is Goodwin hitting LH, Hader would wipe him out later. Hopefully TLR would PH at that point.

Willing to make gutsy trades with their farm system…and even take back money over talent to a small extent here…in order to put the best possible team on the field. Whereas most of SoxTalk is relatively split on giving up Sheets or Burger, depending on the return.

Well, that’s pretty ballsy to bench Eric Hosmer with his massive contract and playoff experience for someone who’s more or less a utility hitter and certainly not someone capable of hitting 25-35 homers at 1B.

With Nola back (if he hits like 2020) at catcher, then the weakest members of the offense are Hosmer (100) and Myers (116)…everyone else is a 125+ wrc hitter. They just weren’t getting enough from Kim and Profar as their superutility guys, although Kim has been Gold Glove level defensively. OF Grisham, Pham, Myers, Frazier, Profar IF Machado, Tatis, Cronenworth, Hosmer, Frazier, Kim, Profar Nola/Caratini I guess they also want to improve the speed/athleticism over Myers in RF in the late innings. They have a burner in Mateo who was their last guy off the bench, great speed/no hit. Biggest weakness continues to be injuries, back end of the rotation and the bullpen in front of Melancon.

He’s already seen time in the majors this year…can play nearly every position, but the Padres are now looking for more reliable offense with both Kim and Profar scuffling, and Hosmer has had a disappointing year as well. Marcano was basically blocked across the board but was brought up when there were a ton of injuries. Padres still retain all their top pitching prospects, Abrams (hurt) and Campusano, a highly regarded catcher who also saw early big league playing time but wasn’t ready offensively. With Nola back and Frazier added, they’re going to go after LAD and SFG to avoid the play in. Very weak schedule the last two months, I think the easiest of all the contenders.

When’s the last time the on-deck hitter was involved in a similar situation at home plate and successfully intervened in some way…besides the obligatory slide/don’t slide? Seems like the kind of thing that happens just a handful of times across hundreds of games every season.

Oklahoma also lost the yearly rivalry game with Nebraska. Other than Ok State and Texas, not too many games on the FB schedule to get excited about except for occasional non conference like Ohio State. Then sort of a rivalry with KU in basketball but pretty one-sided. As to an earlier point, Texas A&M made sense to elevate their program and recruiting in the SEC, but doesn’t seem as much of an issue for UT. Just seems to complicate their path to another NC game even more. The other thing is that Oklahoma and Texas are going to quickly have to improve defensively or get run over…guess it also depends how long they can keep their head coach, so this move might be part of the thinking about staff retention.

The AL seems pretty set, other than Toronto and the Yankees being in or out of the acquisition mode. The problem is we have to compete with the small market A’s and Rays and pretty much every potential playoff team has more abundant prospect capital. The NL seems pretty much set as well, other than the East teams fighting for the division…especially a desperate franchise like Philly without a playoff appearance for a decade. The Mets seemingly have an unlimited appetite right now. The White Sox will definitely have their opportunities with more sellers than buyers compared to a season ago.

On paper. But that’s probably more the exception (bad bullpens and defense/fundamentals prevailing) if you went through the last decade of WS teams (2014-15 Royals say hello, A.Miller, etc.) What we lack is those truly defined roles like we had in 2005 with Cotts, Politte and Jenks. Talent/potential has to start translating into performance at some point. Everyone in front of Hendriks is constantly in a state of flux.

Even if he retagged, the umpire had called time out/play was dead…gave the ball to Pina and he threw it to Burnes, so it wouldn’t have technically been allowed anyway. Moncada should retag instinctively and instantly after the play if he’s not sure. Of course, that’s hard to do if you were just ruled safe, but you should have a pretty good innate sense as the baserunner if you got the plate or not.

Should count mentions of that 9 game cushion by broadcasters on both radio and t.v. side between now and the end of the game tomorrow evening….
