If your opponents are unpopular enough, it’s certainly possible to win elections this way. But especially for the party that has a more difficult time inspiring its supporters to turn out to vote, that’s an ominous sign. Right now on health care and many other issues, Democrats suffer from a cacophony of white papers and a paucity of unity around any kind of vision or story they want to paint of what is wrong with America today and what is the better country they want to build for the future. And until they do, they’re going to struggle to mobilize supporters in the way they need to win tough races.

Need to get better candidates who know how to beat Republicans or at least have a coherent strategy for doing so, the likes of Jason Kander and Cheri Bustos in Illinois. Trump is not widely liked in the 6th District, where the presidential vote swung further toward Democrats in 2016 than in all but one non-Utah House seat. But while Trump’s standing in the district loosened the GOP’s hold on the seat, it did not dislodge the party. Right now, it's definitely trending towards Handel. That district is one of the 6 best educated in all of America...and a large reason why Trump only won by 1.5%. IMO, the DC shooting of Scalise is going to go down as the X factor if Handel goes on to win, but polling says almost everyone was hardened in their positions 7-10 days ago. Illinois-5 is 15th. Five California districts there as well. Seems if Handel wins, the Senate will be emboldened to pass AHCA bill...leading to World War Three in 2018/20 over single payer. The other important point is how well the stock market has performed, reverse those numbers and the Trump administration is in real trouble.

The Hickman story if he even briefly makes it to the big leagues is Disney's Rookie II...or another version of The Blind Side. That's obviously why there's more noise around him, the human interest angle. Same reason Tim Tebow started out the year as the MILB player with by far the most coverage. Not based on prospect rankings.

Honestly, the only ex Royal I would consider would be Cain (FA market)...but he's hit well enough the last month or so his value is coming up to the point where he's no longer a bargain. That's with the caveat we aren't planning to stick Moncada or Anderson in CF, which is far from assured.

Surely this calculation is wrong: Republican voters whose livelihoods depend on the ability to harvest corn crops in Iowa or ship goods to their store in Arizona (or who live near the water and can't afford flood insurance that's more than their mortgage) can take a look around and realize this "see no evil" strategy is going to hurt them, and soon. Indeed, that the American right has transformed climate change into a partisan issue defies all reason and rational self-interest. Climate change will have the largest and most immediate impacts on the world's poor -- not a demographic the GOP has shown much concern for. But make no mistake -- rich or poor we all share the earth, and the catastrophic impacts of defiling it are coming for all of us.

With Bryce Harper potentially nearing the end of his tenure in Washington, there is a great deal of pressure on the Nationals to win NOW. The whole reason why you play is to be in the pennant race. Sometimes being in that position comes with a price--that's usually prospects. When you're a perennial contender it's usually because your MLB roster is already strong at most positions. Most prospects (who aren't super prospects like Robles), are like kindling. If you're not calling them up to help keep the MLB fire burning, you better be moving them for guys who can help you or else the fire will burn out. Just look at what Washington sacrificed to fill their CF position in December! They are ALL IN--we've been there. It's only a good position to be in if you end up winning it all. The consequence of going all in and not winning it all is...well...we're watching it now with our Sox. Winning it all in Washington is expected--and might be the biggest sales pitch they have to keeping Bryce around for another contract. If I'm a GM, I smell blood in the Washington water. Their prospects are as good as gone by the deadline. Brian Giles for Ricardo Rincon comes to mind....the one area teams used to overpay for non-closers was left handed setup guys (think Marte and Thornton at peak value) with the stuff to get some saves.
