The Danish Girl...Eddie Redmayne definitely deserves a Best Actor nomination here. Can't say it's a great film overall, but a very typical Tom Hooper effort. Ostensibly, a straightforward bio film about a woman trapped in a man's body who eventally got the first sex change operation...with all the societal pressures that went against that in the 1920's. Next, I still think the IMAX film back then was better, but Everest was strong. Having been to the foot of the mountain in early October...just can't imagine how cold and windy it is, and that was well below base camp. The wind just takes your breath away. I was ready to go back after sleeping in a tent just one night with about five blankets. The most beautiful view of the stars at night you can imagine. Jason Clarke was his usual workman-like self as Rob Hall...whose conflicts over commercial interest because of his outdoor adventures business ($65,000 per climber) and the Krakauer coverage pushed him back up the mountain and probably cost 3 if not 4 more lives in the process...including his own. Would like to see Clarke in a different sort of role for a change.

Iowa was down 18-37 at Purdue near halftime and now has been leading by 6-7 points down the stretch largely due to a willowy walk-on freshman named Nicholas Baer. By posting this, no Hawkeye bb jinx of blowing games at the end. It's eviscerated, lol. Uthoff was shaky down the stretch shooting free throws but what a player...Jok and Gesell were off but still won, mostly due to Uhl and Baer picking up the slack. Crazy college bb world when you blow a 20 point lead and 6 with 1:08 to go AT Iowa State and then beat the #1 team handily at home and come back from 19 down (37-20 at halftime) to roll a strong Purdue team at home. Takes a bit of the sting out of the Rose debacle. @marcmorehouse @marcmorehouse it isn't like Cal. Isn't an agri state either. Cal has $55 billion in agri income - Iowa has $35 billion But which state has more cows per capita?? -
QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 2, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) Oh, you better believe TFA is in my top 10 right now. I know what you mean. I know I can be a snob sometimes but I enjoy popcorn flicks just as much as indy ones. My list will be tainted because I probably won't get to see Carol, Anomalisa, or Brooklyn. Anomalisa is brilliant but strange. The most out there/adult-themed animation film of my lifetime...other than SP Team America World Police. Inside Out is a better, more cohesive plotline but wow on Anomalisa.

Competitive White Sox with Upside Potential

Or simply change the way you evaluate and develop hitters, like they are attempting to do with Hostetler coming over. PS. Sentences 2-3 of your second paragraph were quite entertaining. Accidentally is a good way to put it, a positive spin. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 2, 2016 -> 04:07 PM) Yahoo has some very heavy hitters. I do not know why they were brought up thou. Because the actual company in the US basically has no or negative value in terms of its current stock market valuation. At any rate, you might be right, the fantasy sports brand might well survive but not so sure about the columnists. Although a lot of the site itself is outsourced or linked to other content providers/partners.

If Iowa was winning or competitive in that game, it would have been funny. Farms for "middle class" people don't exist so much any more...they've all pretty much become huge conglomerates run by companies like ConAgra. If you went back 30 years ago, when the stickers first appeared, and we had Farm Aid, that was a different time when Stanford band members would have had their teeth kicked in because you would have been talking more about economics and social class. I grew up in Bettendorf and never knew a single farmer. A purely suburban lifestyle. The only way farms affected us was the closing of some barns and selling of land where we used to attend parties just outside the city limits. -
I'm having a hard time believing Brian will pick Star Wars because of his film critic side... There should be a category for most entertaining and you could put Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, The Martian, Mad Max and Sicario there. It's hard to compare Spotlight, Room, Carol, The Big Short or Brooklyn to those honestly. Totally different genres. Maybe I'll change my mind after watching in a theatre with 3D and surround sound, but I just feel Star Wars relied too much on trotting out familiar themes and characters...and the whole dynamic with Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford was just off, that Daisy Ridley evolved too quickly and the whole second death star scenario was forced. All that said, it was great in evoking memories and a faithful and modernized recreation of those first three movies everyone loves so much. Even the music and familiar scroll at the beginning.

Yahoo Sports you'd have to believe is in danger as well with the company outside of Alibaba and Yahoo! Japan hemorraging money...

The Orioles have already added Kim and Trumbo. They also have Flaherty as 1b/DH/RF option. They could go Reimold, Jones, Trumbo/Flaherty, but they are like the White Sox...desperately in need of a better defender in right. Unless they believe Kim is a legit starter at a corner or DH, they're going to need one more bat to survive in that division. As to Omar's point, sure...2018 might not develop as expected in terms of FAs. That said, agents like Kazmir's have to calculate their client's age and make some projections about what the future markets will look like using all of the info available...and that next year's is a terrible one from the talent acquisition standpoint and post 2017 is just fair/decent.
-
Did he explain why Upton has dropped out of consideration or most fa conversations in general?
-
Why would anyone want to compete with that mass of talented players after 2018? These next two classes are the time to come out...
-
The quotation was always about a younger, in the very beginning of his prime ace...at least the Tanaka example. Abreu was at that similar age, 26/27. Upton is the closest to that description.

Announcing an official intended budget would kind of be counterproductive...we can do it fairly closely looking at attendance, projected season ticket sales, profit/loss in the prior year and following all the Forbes numbers cumulatively.
-
That's what I thought about Earl but it's because of the book coming out in 2012...
-
No balls of steel if Hahn is sleeping in...
-
The problem is the White Sox would be $30-35 million over their supposed budget this year...that big a jump would be unprecedented without following playoffs or competitive seasons. Next year, less of an issue. Essentially it's deliberately spending into a loss for at least one year or more if it backfires..for a payoff more likely in 2017 and 18.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Jan 2, 2016 -> 08:13 AM) 2015 List (No particular order): Star Wars Ex Machina Mad Max Me, Earl and the Dying Girl The Revenant The Hateful 8 Carol Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation Dope Sicario The End of the Tour James White They Look Like Us Bridge of Spies Creed Straight Out Of Compton Tangerine The best movie of the year was Star Wars. The most disappointing movie was The Martian I haven't see. Spotlight and the majority of the Big Short. I forgot Me, Earl...that was great, too. It Follows deserves consideration as the best horror film...Black Mass...and another Edgerton film, The Gift. Tangerine, I started and couldn't get into. Critics love Chi-Raq but it wasn't half the impact of Do The Right Thing to me. Maybe not a Nick Cannon fan...preferred him in Drumline. Angela Bassett was the saving grace, and Samuel Jackson's riffs.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 2, 2016 -> 07:43 AM) Any list that doesn't have Star Wars at #1, isn't a real list. It way too derivative of the 1977 film...

I think it has more to do with the fact a lot of white fans were in their 30s and 40s and wanted 10-20 things signed to sell for profit. Most players prefer to sign for kids and or women/mothers comparatively. I sent him a couple of baseball cards in 1985 or 1986 and he autographed them ... Imo things really got crazy with autograph fees and shows and collectors the decade after that and greedy/pushy collectors were part of the problem. They gave off the vibe of wanting to turn around and sell those things for a quick buck.

Lazaro Armenteros: Armenteros, 16, stands 6-2, 205 pounds and has been hailed as the next Cuban star-in-waiting. He established residency in Haiti in May and will attract a crowd when he begins auditioning for teams in showcases and private workouts in the coming months.

QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Jan 1, 2016 -> 11:33 PM) I thought I read somewhere that teams were questioning Upton's effort/work ethic or something along those lines. I could be mistaken, but I swear I saw that in an article recently (could have even been on this board too). If that's true, then that might be why there literally doesn't seem to be any market for him. Didn't stop the Red Sox with Ramirez and Sandoval last year...talent always gets opportunity, despite question marks, on character/work ethic, until the cost/benefit no longer comes out positive.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 1, 2016 -> 10:57 PM) Just brutal bowl season capped by Iowa getting embarrassed Jon Miller has a good podcast about the positives of the season at hawkeyenation. With King and a Rose bowl win, they were top 4-6 in preseason. First time in six years that expectations before a season are so high. Now they will be 15-23 next year probably. MSU got exposed as well as NW. OSU...how the hell did they lose to MSU? The question of the year in the Big Ten. -
You can make an argument for Gordon or Upton going shorter because of the horrific FA market next year and their injuries (Gordon) or inconsistency (Upton). For a player in the prime of his career, you're not hearing about many teams aggressively pursuing Upton, at least not in the press. Could be a smokescreen. That said, you could imagine Gordon coming off an injury-filled year betting on himself bouncing back and signing a shorter deal for one year. On the other hand, Cespedes is never going to have a better season and age 30 is the perfect time to strike. Still, there are at least 9-12 teams who would love one of those four.
