QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) That seems excessive for a career below average pitcher, but gotta take chances somewhere What doesn't in this marketplace? Plus he's going to be motivated on a short-term deal, he fits the KW groundball profile and he already knows the Central.

The Theory of Everything....very worthwhile, not quite Beautiful Mind quality...but Eddie Remayne should get a Best Actor nomination. Felicity Jones was quite solid, too. I'd put her in the maybe category for best actress at the moment until I can compare it with other performances. Well done, deftly acted but unexceptional is the best way to put it. The romantic angle was a surprise...Interstellar probably throws more sheer physics at you.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 27, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) Abreu I wasn't including him in the first wave with Cespedes, Puig, Viciedo, etc.

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 08:05 PM) with stewart there who is in charge Larussa or Stewart. Ultimately Stewart, but it's more (with LaRussa) like the Epstein/Hoyer situation I have a feeling than the KW/Hahn model...or Friedman in LA with Colletti.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:25 PM) I like Semien being the starting 2B. Who do prefer over him in that role? Sanchez is a better fielder but won't hit as well and Micah has the most overall upside but there are questions about his arm/defense and ability to stay healthy and translate his minor league stolen base figures from 2013 to the major league level. It's one thing if he can steal 50-75 bags. It's quite another if it's only 15-25 like a Rios or Ramirez. As speed is his only "plus" tool, that falloff in stolen bases would have to be made up for with XB hits and a high average/walk rate. Nobody's sure how he would hit at the next level. Somewhere between Billy Hamilton and Marcus Semien is the best guess.

2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread
caulfield12 replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
Pollock..and he's not going anywhere, they traded Eaton to free up that position for him. Certainly not to the White Sox. -
Dear Phil Rogers: Please write a Danks for Victorino trade rumor article. You can also include Curtis Granderson and Chris Young if you like.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 08:57 PM) I don't get whatever infatuation there is for Victorino. There is no reason to believe he will hit even .260ish with no power. Let's face it, de Aza is probably better. 1) Victorino's 2013 season, where he was a key cog in Red Sox World Series victory 2) Veteran leader with tons of playoff experience...well respected like LaRoche 3) Checks all the Rowand/Erstad/Eaton qualities of gritty, heady and "baseball rat/dirtbag"...the OF version of Daryl from The Walking Dead 4) Would have to prove his health in one last drive for a final contract...motivated/incentivized 5) Would improve the defense (if healthy) 6) One way to get Danks' deal off the payroll, especially for 2016...payroll flexibility going forward

The other thing to keep in mind is that the Dodgers have Guerrero, Arrebuena and especially Nick Gordon. Two of those three guys could definitely play SS. Or they have options like S.Castro, Lowrie, Stephew Drew and Asdrubal Cabrera. Maybe Marco Scutaro. As someone mentioned, they also could target Eduardo Escobar, since the Twins want Santana at SS instead of CF eventually. Tulowitzki's out there, possibly.

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 08:21 PM) and pls explain how that changes anything i said??? no offense intended. Ethier/Crawford + cash would have to go for Danks. Ramirez for Kemp + cash. So they're quite different scenarios. One would leave us with a former MVP and serious hole at SS. The other would leave us with Bassitt, Noesi and Johnson/Beck at the back end of the rotation until the Sox added another starter and Rodon is recalled. It would definitely force them to acquire a starting pitcher.

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 08:15 PM) kemp, crawford, ethier it is all the same here. they are huge contracts that the sox can do without. however, again, if the dodgers are willing to add to that pck to entice the sox, that is another thing. if that trade does goes down, i guess Semien is the player at SS. re Tim Anderson, i think and maybe i am crazy, but i think he can handle the offensive side of the majors. the other side, well more grooming is needed. remember it is the Dodgers who needs the sox, not the other way around. Kemp was (again) an MVP-quality bat the 2nd half last season. Unfortunately, his defense has deteriorated to the point where some of that value is eroded, but he's much more on an impact player than Crawford/Ethier at this point...despite the injuries over the last 2-3 seasons. Which of course means the Dodgers will hold out for less of a salary subsidy going the other way compared to Ethier/Crawford, too. He definitely fits the KW "Sox fans can dream once again" scenario MORE, though.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) Digressing for a moment, I always believe that if the Sox had managed to put together a competent hitting lineup 1-8, they could have lived with Anderson's bat in the 9 hole because the defense he provided was that good. The problem was that most of the rest of the lineup also sucked and Anderson became the whipping boy for the team's offensive woes. The was the best offense in the AL the first half of the season...or maybe 2nd to Detroit. The problem was when the offense cooled, starting pitchers also wore down and Jenks was injured (the perfect storm) in the 2nd half...they couldn't score runs to save their lives for a stretch there, I remember a big series against the Red Sox that was completely pathetic (not the one they miraculously beat Papelbon before the ASB, either).

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 07:55 PM) This could be a possibility. Some sort of Danks for Victorino swap might just make some crazy sense. I still prefer the Sox looked for a better option in LF but if it meant trading Danks I would not complain. A move like that actually saves the Sox 1.5M that can be added to the roughly 20M they have left to spend and maybe sign a starter like Volquez and another reliever or two. I don't know how possible that scnerio is, just throwing it out there as an example. It's a gamble for both sides, which seems to make it close to fair. One could only imagine how many homers Danks would give up in Boston. Maybe a lot of the line drive homers at USCF would turn into singles and doubles because of the Green Monster. On the other hand, we can't afford to go through another season of using 4th/5th outfielders in starting roles if Victorino misses significant playing time. FWIW, I would be MUCH more afraid if the Pesky Pole was down the LF line and Danks was starting against a RH dominant line-up. But wasn't Danks actually more effective against lefties than righties? Would have to check the splits.

First significant gamble of the LaRussa Era out in the desert. For a player who profiles almost like a DH war-wise, he'd better have a helluva bat (see Abreu/Victor Martinez).
-
The problem is that Ramirez for Kemp and "Thome cash subsidy" opens up such a big hole at SS that whatever we gained from Kemp in LF would be cancelled out by the loss of Ramirez at SS. If it was 2016 and Tim Anderson was close to ready (and it was more of a sure thing he would be able to handle the position defensively)...then I'd be for it. The problem is that going with this "close to all-in but not quite 100%" approach it's pretty much forcing us to compete this year. And would Kemp even be happy playing LF in Chicago? It would all depend on how much money the Dodgers will willing to include...if Kemp could be paid essentially like Melky Cabrera for the next four years instead of in the $20 million range, it would be much more feasible.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:37 AM) Yes, there is a lack of accountability, and cooperation in the communities where overwhelmingly a majority of crimes are committed. We live in Chicago, where there has been 155 homicides since Michael Brown was killed and 74% of those were black males, 29 were teenagers. Of those homicides 5 were committed by the CPD in case we were still outraged at the police killing people. Looking at this topic from a historical perspective, why would you expect it?

http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/1...g-spending-ways Putting 2 and 2 together, Bradley, Jr., Cespedes and Victorino are the most likely to move. Cespedes will cost a starting pitcher, so forget that idea. So it's down to Bradley, Jr., and Victorino. Bradley, Jr., and Eaton in the same outfield would be taking a page out of the Royals' book, but not really "dreaming" big. Victorino would be the smarter addition, if there's anything still left in the tank at this point.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 10:31 PM) Yeah, no doubt Leury can use more time at Charlotte and I agree with ya about taking Holt over Danks/ Saladino. As far as cost, I haven't a clue. I know Boston already has too many outfielders and their infield seems set as well with the exception of catcher so pitching would likely be what they seek. Sale and Q are out of the question IMO but you think there's any chance Boston would be interested in Noesi? Noesi's too valuable to the Sox because he's insurance to at least hold down the fort at the back end of the rotation while waiting for reinforcements and/or Bassit/Beck to have an impact before Rodon comes up for good. Boston wouldn't gamble with Noesi as their 5, and it's sort of like the Phil Humber or McHugh situations, where players that have been waived by other teams still aren't deemed trustworthy in terms of giving up much talent. I wouldn't mind the trade itself, if I knew we were going to have replacements for Noesi, but the trade in and of itself doesn't make sense strategically for where we are at this point in the off-season. If we had Brett Anderson and Hochevar on the roster, it would be more comfortable to deal Noesi, but he still needs another 1/2 year of consistency to build up a bit more value IMO.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) I'm all in on Moncada, you never get the opportunity for players of this talent level at this age available on the open market. With the smaller payroll this season, there should be money left in the bank to make a run at him. I think he ends up signing for between $20-$30M, and would get twice that if not for the penalties. The problem is there's a good chance we end up exceeding the 2014 payroll by the time all is said and done with this offseason. If you ask most posters here, choose solutions for LF, RHSP and back-end bullpen OR spend the money on Moncada and don't add anything more to payroll from the current level, the majority will go with the first option, especially after 7 seasons without a playoff appearance. Obviously, we'd love to do BOTH. But how realistic is that? Not very.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:58 PM) Holt is interesting. I just looked him up and the only positions he didn't play at in 2014 were catcher and pitcher. The kid definitely has versatility and seems to play solid defense wherever he's at. Please, anything to get Leury Garcia back to AAA. Actually, I'd prefer Holt to Danks or Saladino as well. But at what cost for "Zobrist Lite"?

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 10:50 AM) I'm asking if 100 officers alone in their car try to cite these kids for jaywalking, how many of them end up shooting the kid to death? How many end up attacked? If it's not 50% of the officers or higher (would have ended up shooting), then something is seriously wrong with the way this particular situation was approached and Brown was engaged.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:32 AM) If they burn down a little ceasars, yes. Maybe they're upset that Mike Illitch keeps spending truckloads of money on the Tigers' bloated roster.

It's certainly not the job of a PROSECUTOR to present his own version of an NBC Olympic Hero profile to build up additional sympathy for the officer that's under investigation. Doesn't exactly sound impartial...more like a self-fulfilling prophecy, where they took the available evidence and forced it to fit a foregone conclusion.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) I love how this is an argument against a jury trial system existing at all. You're automatically for the animalistic rioters if you've never had the opportunity in your lifetime to draw a gun on someone...apparently. It's kind of like being against Guantanomo Bay and Abu Gharib...and expressing that honestly-held belief that it's not the correct action for a country of laws to set the precedent of water boarding/rendition...which therefore makes you a "terrorist sympathizer" and unappreciative of soldiers/policemen/firefighters, etc.
