  1. Neither is Tyler Flowers. He's a glasses-wearing, doubles-hitting cyborg.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 26, 2014 -> 06:51 PM) He isn't trading anyone of good value unless he gets someone of value. He isn't trading for Papelbon. It does create a bit of a dilemma about dumping DeAza or Viciedo to free up at-bats for Garcia. Don't think they will contemplate that kind of move while within 5 games of the WC.
  3. By the way, looks like Sale's also going to start next Friday against the Twins. Off day on Thursday. 5-5 season series as of today. Also, Sale has only given up one XB hit against a LHB all season.
  4. Does anyone realistically expect this to continue when we're NOT playing a Twins' team without Mauer and Willingham/Dozier struggling a bit? Still can't imagine Rick Hahn make a desperation move to address the bullpen unless it's someone...not, still can't believe he would pull the trigger on a Papelbon.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 26, 2014 -> 05:44 PM) You are right, Wonder Woman isn't leggy or model-esque Umm...the more recent tv archetype has always been the Lynda Carter/Megan Fox/Miss America look. The cartoon image you just attached isn't a size 0-2 or even 4. More of a Lucy Lawless look. I guess you can argue they're "Amazonian" or whatever, but there's no denying the fact that Gal Gadot isn't as strong or muscular, especially her lower body (compared to Scarlett Johansson or the other three)...one of the other top contenders was Jamie Alexander, the Thor/Avengers actress. Of course, there's also talk of her having her own stand-alone movie (and that it wouldn't have been logical/cohesive for her to play 2 Marvel characters simultaneously). Voluptuous would be another adjective...Gadot, that's just not the word that comes to mind. She's more of a Cat Woman IMO (and yes, I realize that Anne Hathaway and Halle Berry are "curvy," too). At any rate, it will be interesting to see how it turns out tapping a relatively unknown (other than Fast & Furious) actress. Saturday Update: Universal reports that Lucy earned a strong $17.1 million on Friday, including Thursday night's $2.75 million early grosses. BoxOffice projects the film could net around $46 million for the weekend. Making Lucy's debut even more impressive is the fact that its opening day handily topped that of 2010's Salt, starring Angelina Jolie, which took in $12.5 million on its way to a $36 million opening frame. There's no doubt that Scarlett Johansson's rising star power in the wake of her Marvel movie turns helped drive Lucy's success. Unfortunately, early word of mouth looks like a mixed bag with a 58 percent Flixster user score. Reviews are on the fresh/rotten bubble at Rotten Tomatoes as its score hovers at 60 percent this morning. Meanwhile, Paramount's and MGM's Hercules bowed to $11.05 million on Friday for a projected weekend of $30 million. Star Dwayne Johnson is to thank for giving the film some needed moviegoer appeal, although the numbers are still modest in the grand scheme of things for a $100 million production budget (excluding marketing and distribution). Overseas performance will be the key in determining the film's theatrical profitability. Early word of mouth is also somewhat mixed at 69 percent on Flixster, while critics gave the film 63 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
  6. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 26, 2014 -> 06:17 PM) Beckham with his 21st double in 81st game. 42 double pace for a full season. I multiplied by 2. You unfortunately can't double his average against RHP and extrapolate it for a full season.
  7. Yankees, Blue Jays and Mariners all at +5. If we could win tonight and then complete the sweep tmrw, we'd finish the weekend at only 4 games back for the WC. Looks like all of our moves (Dunn, Beckham, DeAza, Viciedo) will come in August.
  8. Great baserunning by Alexei Ramirez there. Saw that Willingham was lackadaisical and flat-footed. Alexei thought there was only one out just now...lol. Oh, well.
  9. Well, Semien (Beckham/Ramirez), Wilkins and Davidson are blocked at the moment....Johnson's still too young...and they already know what Danks can do. Then you have the Phegley defense/make-up or leadership concerns. Not sure how they're going to get playing time for Davidson with Konerko/Gillaspie/Abreu/Dunn, but it would be nice if Konerko volunteered to give up some of his at-bats the last two months.
  10. Chris Sale... Lefties batting .180 against all-time 3 homers in his career by lefties against (Boesch, 2 and Hafner) Has only surrendered two two-out hits with RISP all season long (2014)
  11. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 26, 2014 -> 05:02 PM) Damn, is Charlotte's pitching bad. But the current lineup sure can hit. Maybe can hit if you take them out of that park...which is going to be a huge problem going forward assessing our Charlotte roster statistically.
  12. Sale would be first White Sox pitcher since Buehrle to win 10 of his first 11 decisions in a season. Darnell's strikeout pitch is the slider.
  13. Supposedly this guy threw 100 MPH at one point in the minors but he's been in the low 90's so far.
  14. It looks like Sheena/Conan the Barbarian or a bad Brigitte Nielsen outfit from the late 80's. Despite being too leggy and model-esque for the part, agree about Gadot.
  15. I remember Ordonez was the Sally League with Hickory I guess in 1994...because I was working for Augusta. He just hit and hit and hit until he got noticed. There were always concerns about his weight/frame and being far from the ideal looking player. In fact, that year, I remember being more excited about how Jeff Abbott was hitting than anyone else on the Crawdads. Ordonez was the kind of player you had to watch game after game after game and then he finally won you over when you realized what a solid player he was...he wasn't even close to a decent defender then, but he threw fairly well and played the game the right way and seemed to enjoy himself as well. Those two years, he would have ranked well behind Ruben Rivera, Vladimir Guerrero, Andruw Jones and Jermaine Dye in terms of impressiveness at the time, but he just kept outperforming his expectations until they were forced to give him a chance...not unlike Mark Buehrle.
  16. That's a good one, the Greg metric. Please move on from the argument he's actually not so bad because the rest of his draft class was an even worse disappointment and allow Gordon's corpse to rest quietly in peace.
  17. Three triples and a double in the same game for Puig. Tougher than hitting 3 homers, arguably.
  18. Let's hope for miracles with Wilkins. We need another couple to be a contender. www.sportsonearth.com Brandon Moss traveled a similar, non-traditional path to All-Star status. The Red Sox drafted Moss out of high school in 2002 but he didn't see the majors for the first time until 2007. He played everywhere in the field while in the Red Sox's farm system but saw time only in the outfield after his call up to the majors. Moss was hitting .295/.337/.462 when the Red Sox shipped him to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 as part of the Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay trade. The Pirates asked Moss to change his swing, to try to take the ball the other way, despite his success as a pull hitter. He struggled through the 2009 season and found himself back in the minors, first with the Pirates in 2010 and then with the Phillies in 2011. At age 28, his career looked bleak. Then the A's signed him to a minor-league contract before the 2012 season. Moss looked at the logjam in the A's outfield -- Cespedes, Coco Crisp, Josh Reddick, Johnny Gomes and Seth Smith -- and knew the only way he'd make it to Oakland was by playing first base. So he asked his Triple-A manager Steve Scarsone if he could get time at first. Scarsone said yes and on June 6, 2012, Moss made his A's debut with a start at first base. Moss's slash in 322 games for the A's over the last three seasons is .268/.345/.541 with 73 home runs. He ranks in the top 20 of the most valuable position players in the American League, according to FanGraphs. And, for Bob Melvin, he's been invaluable. When Josh Reddick suffered a knee injury in early June, Moss was back in right field, where he'd played sparingly since 2012. "I'm an offense guy," Moss said. "I'll play wherever they need me so I can stay in the lineup," adding that players need to be flexible to succeed. "Even Mike Trout has changed positions," Moss noted.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 06:06 AM) I don't think it will be bad,per se, I just think it might feel like less than its predecessors. Changing directors and rewriting like they did is never good though. It did work out in the end with World War Z, to the point where they're making a sequel from what I understand. Expendables 3 was already leaked online, I guess 200,000 have already downloaded it in 24 hours. That series has probably reached its nadir, although I guess there will be one more. With Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas...and now adding Kellan Lutz (Twilight) and Ronda Rousey (MMA) for the youth appeal, there's not many 80's stars left. Isn't Steven Seagal pretty much the only action star from that decade who hasn't appeared in one of these? Next time, please add Arianny Celeste to the line-up or a random Chinese female star just to take away from the testerone level. Fwiw, Rousey is probably as good or better than Gia Carano, although that's a pretty low bar to get over.
  20. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 08:53 PM) That's just a very weird thing to say if you watch baseball. Sometimes you can't "see the forest for the trees" when you become too familiar with a player on your own team. Dunn is what he is. But he still has value to another contending team, in a clearly defined role, either DHing against RHP, occasional 1B fill-in or PHer/power threat off the bench. We all watched Rios go through the motions in 2009 and 2011, and you would have sworn we would eat that entire contract. Three years later, we ended up just a bit disappointed in the return for him.
  21. Doesn't really matter unless we were trying to trade Danks, and then no GM's going to fault him for throwing strikes with a 9-1 lead. What are we going to do with Flowers if he keeps this up again for the next two months? Quite the enigma. One way or another, I hope it's clear going into the offseason what Hahn needs to do. Another thing to keep in mind is who he's doing it against. It's the Twins in this series, not the Tigers, A's or Athletics. Still, it's nice to see he didn't completely go into the tank and is fighting back. Offense reminiscent of April. Saw the early 3-0 lead and just knew it had to be Abreu.
  22. Aka Melissa McCarthy or Fat Amy instead of a Victoria's Secret model from South America
  23. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 08:03 AM) I believe he was referring to Seattle signing Morales. Well, that's easy. They envisioned that they had (cheaper and perhaps long-term) replacements in Morrison and Hart. Obviously, not so much. And it seems pretty clear that Morales didn't want to sign for just one year and keep repeating the QO process...which he ended up doing anyway, except he ended up losing $7 million or so and simultaneously having spring training in the middle of the season instead of Feb/March. In hindsight, they should have tried harder to hold onto Michael Morse instead of trading him to the Orioles last year...or trying harder to re-sign him.
  24. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) Umm...why didn't they just sign him when he was a free agent for half the season? Well, the Twins saved about $4 million that would have been wasted on the next two months and got someone who could be a future closer if everything breaks right for Pryor...although those lat surgeries are a new procedure, I guess this is the second one after Peavy's for a major league pitcher.
  25. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 03:28 PM) My predictions are ass backwards. Hercules getting good reviews, Lucy not so much. Lots of pressure on Ant Mani, IMO, to not be the first Marvel POS. Italian version? Mania? Just kidding. I think the only movie that's debuted under $70 million in their current string is The Incredible Hulk.
