QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:45 AM) Bingo. Because we hold public servants like policemen, fire fighters and teachers to a higher standard. At least we used to. Not to mention that they're the ones in a position of power or authority. Pretty simple.

QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:37 AM) these are 2 totally different situation. the cops beating and killing of a prep, does tarnish the entire police force, and that is not right. the rioters and looters just show african americans doing it, and that is stereo typing the entire race. i still go back to the mother beating the shiiite out of his son. that goes unnoticed. why, b/c it is not promoting some one agenda. good tv. Even that video paints African-Americans with a brush of violence...even if we see it as harmless because it's an older mother "beating" her son, she's not talking him down or using logic, she's resorting to anger out of frustration, which is basically what defines some of the rioters (besides the opportunists).

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:18 AM) I there anything that the Baltimore Orioles COO can do about where official MLB merchandise is manufactured? Sure, their family is in the ranks of the billionaires now. Are they powerless? If they believe so strongly about this particular issue, then they could build a factory for New Era/Majestic/Rawlings/Nike in East or West Baltimore. Wouldn't that be the EXACT solution to some of the endemic/underlying issues that he's going on and on about? Now do you think fans would be content to pay $35-50 for hats that used to be $12-15 USD two decades ago? In order to protect and/or create more American jobs? Pretty sure I know the answer.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:08 AM) Well....not exactly. eta: also, on MLK: That doesn't mean he (MLK) actively planned or participated in any riots...just, at his weakest moments, sympathized with the emotions boiling under the surface. It's the reason why his tactics didn't work well in Albany, Georgia, because the police refused to engage or react or provoke. But that doesn't mean King was a traitor to the cause of non-violence. No way.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:04 AM) This is a statement by Oriole's COO John Angelos made over the weekend after they had the first issue at the ballpark. You know what Balta, take a look inside a New Era baseball cap and what do you think it says? MADE IN CHINA. If he really wants to make China the boogeyman (and that's his right as an American)...he should be careful to make sure his own house is in order first on this issue. I'm going to guess that 90-95% of the Majestic/Rawlings/Nike etc. t-shirts and jerseys are made in SE Asian countries. I'm going to guess that the Iphone that Mr. Angelos paid $600-650 for in the US (and that costs 33% more without nearly the service/warranty protections, despite the median wage being roughly 1/4th here what it is in the US, making iphones 6-8X more expensive here domestically than in the US, essentially) was made in Shenzhen/Guangdong, China by Foxconn workers earning roughly $200-300 per month sleeping on top of each other in rooms similar to broom closets. http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-arch...e-apple-factory While this story was retracted, 90% of it remains true, and there have been so many suicides at that plant (Japanese run) that they had to build huge netting around the top so workers couldn't jump off...those same workers who would patiently and diligently wait until payday to make sure their families at least received their wages before killing themselves.

The Rev. Jamal Bryant, a Baltimore minister who has been pressing for nonviolent protests over Freddie Gray's death, told CNN's Chris Cuomo minutes ago that it was a mistake for Baltimore city schools to cancel classes today. "Today, schools are closed, which … I think is a bad mistake. Because these are young people out. What are you going to do productive?” said Bryant, of Empowerment Temple Church. He said he's inviting students to his church today for two events. First is a one-day training session on how and why to engage in civil disobedience nonviolently. After that, he said he will take students into riot-damaged areas "to go clean up what is messed up." Though he pushes for nonviolence, people are rightly enraged over a "criminal justice system grossly slanted" against African-Americans, Bryant said. www.cnn.com Would be pretty surprised if they don't play today from all the scenes on television of kids and adults sweeping/cleaning up.

John Danks
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 07:21 AM) Dumping a problem for another problem is bound to be a wash. Danks for anything that would be worth Danks would be like that, whether for Bailey, Hamilton, etc. Agreed, although it will be interesting to track Giolito, Fedde, Hoffman and Matuella. Giolito and Harvey certainly appear to have suffered few side effects. We'll just have to wait and see with Jose Fernandez. With Strasburg, he doesn't seem to have returned to quite the same form he exhibited coming out of SD State.

http://www.hardballtimes.com/tommy-john-su...-in-the-majors/ We might as well forget about taking Brady Aiken. In the end, nobody knows with 100% accuracy what will happen...the charts/graphs certainly aren't as positive for TJ surgery recovery as the perception. Of course, for EVERY Gavin Floyd, there's a Mr. Harvey with the Mets, who seemingly hasn't missed a beat in his comeback. But if you’re curious about the typical post-surgery career for just those pitchers who do get back to major league baseball, the median games played was 102 and the median innings pitched was 167 for all major league pitchers who underwent the surgery between 1974 and 2009. Even these totals hardly make for exciting post-surgery careers. While the numbers are far from complete, it is also worthwhile understanding that of all major league pitchers who had Tommy John surgery in the past five years — who have had one to four seasons to theoretically recover (2010-2013) plus one to four seasons to theoretically contribute (2011-2014), the median contribution has been 29 appearances and 47 innings pitched. So: that mental math you do when it’s announced that a pitcher on your favorite team is having Tommy John surgery, when you picture them contributing at the same level as you’re used to one calendar year from then? It’s not as reliable as you may believe.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 06:50 AM) All I'm doing is taking the same statements these people want to put out about the rioters breaking the law and applying them to the people who broke the law and actually killed a guy. If these riots are uncivilized, if these riots show that the African American community is violent and undisciplined, then the dead body says the exact same thing about the police force. If you keep filling up gasoline tanks and throwing burning matches at them, yelling at the gasoline for exploding isn't going to be very productive. Except you're talking about a chemical compound that strictly will follow the laws of nature. Human beings not being able to control themselves....well, you didn't see them break discipline on the Edmund Pettus Bridge or in India during the Great Salt March. By and large, you didn't see it happen very often in South Africa in the 70's and 80's (Mandela/ANC) or even with Malcolm X's Nation of Islam before he was slain at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. It's understandable, maybe even justified in some minds...but that doesn't mean it's 100% inevitable for human beings to devolve into lawlessness, chaos and anarchy. Not with the right leadership.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 06:52 AM) TJ surgery worked out real well for Gavin Floyd. You can't believe the money the Sox owe Danks, yet want to add $55 million on top of it for a guy who won't even pitch for at least a year. So how exactly is using Gavin Floyd as one counterexample (and Ptac would tear it apart because the original problem was the screws inserted and the bone/muscle tearing apart, not TJ or ligament replacement surgery) supposed to prove anything? Many are arguing that Josh Hamilton for Danks would be a very good deal for the Sox, and, looking at his stats from 2012 on...there's very little to indicate that would be a good risk performance-wise, not to mention the likelihood of another relapse.

Baltimore Sun Investigates: Undue Force (Sept. 2014): Baltimore has paid about $5.7 million since 2011 over lawsuits claiming that police officers brazenly beat up alleged suspects. One hidden cost: The perception that officers are violent can poison the relationship between residents and police.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 06:22 AM) Then cross him off the list no, this makes zero sense. You dont trade your fifth starter for a guy who might play in 2016 You do when he's a fifth starter who is overpaid and underproductive. It's very simple....that $26 million will go a long ways in fixing the problem of Danks' early departure. And our fifth starter would/could be Noesi, it doesn't have to be Danks. Heck, it could be Erik Johnson, Beck or Frankie Montas, too. Finally, after all these articles about TJ surgery since last year....you really believe that Homer Bailey's going to be out TWO FULL SEASONS? When has that ever happened in the last 10-15 years? Why would teams take Hoffman, Fedde, Matuella, Kirby and Aiken so high?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 06:22 AM) The White Sox do need John Danks or another pitcher. Again, Rodon cannot enter the rotation now and be there at the end of the season. You have to figure some other pitcher will be missing starts, so who do you have? As bad as Danks supposedly is, there were over 600 starts made last season by pitchers who had higher ERAs. And how many of those starts were made by pitchers (with higher ERA's and WHIPs) earning $13 million or more per season? If you were Rick Hahn and you threw that statistic at John Mozeliak and asked what he was willing to offer for Mr. Danks, his response STILL would be how much would you still like to pay for him to pitch for the Cardinals? At any rate, we'll find out exactly how he's perceived around the league in the weeks to come. In all likelihood, guys like Pat Maholm, Aaron Harang, Kyle Lohse or Matt Garza will come into play first. And I would be perfectly content to use Erik Johnson or Montas for the 6-8 starts to bridge us to the end of the season. We are already at 3-4 starts....that gives Rodon something like 18-22, which is quite reasonable.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 06:17 AM) Homer Bailey is about to have TJ surgery too Yes, I know. That's the only way this trade makes SOME sense for both teams. The White Sox don't absolutely need Danks to compete, whereas the Reds definitely need another starting pitcher.

The career number for McCarthy is just south of $71 million, btw. Interestingly, his fb velocity has been in the mid 94's the last two years. As Ptac always notes, increased velocities (compared to his career averages) usually play some role in this spate of pitching injuries, particularly TJ surgeries.

**SPOILER THREAD** GAME OF THRONES ** SPOILER THREAD **
I think the books should end with: Danys and Jon together (it makes sense, in that she would have no problem marrying a bastard with the Stark bloodline and her anti-slavery/equality crusade)... Tyrion as the court advisor with one of the witches (go with the Red Witch over Melisandre)...because the religious/spiritual angle is one of the main counterpoints of strength in the story Actually, to keep in line with the story, it would be Tyrion and a street whore with a heart of gold (see Anne Hathaway in Les Miz for reference). Worm marries Danys' "administrative assistant" and has kids through IVF To be serious, the Greyjoy/men of the seas are the only forces right now that would seem to be equal what Danys and Jon could marshal together. Dorne, not so much. Lannisters...nope. Tyrells, no. Roose Bolton/Freys, nope. That basically leaves the Aegon vs. Jon thread to sort itself out...as well as what eventually happens with Sansa and Arya. Stannis is a joke of a leader, too. The only other area of power would be the Aerie...but I'm not convinced of their military strength at this point, either. I would imagine they would probably want to focus on profitability as the show is getting more and more expensive in terms of cast salaries...so that would limit a lot of the sea battles because they're notoriously expensive, time-consuming and difficult to film.

Statement from Commissioner Manfred...Balt Sun article on series
http://m.orioles.mlb.com/news/article/1209...ioles-white-sox The civil unrest that persisted after the funeral of Freddie Gray on Monday altered his plans somewhat. Manfred did get a chance to address both teams, but that was about it. When the game was postponed due to safety concerns, he headed back to New York without getting an opportunity to see the game. "I didn't get an opportunity to meet with Mr. [Peter] Angelos today," Manfred said. "I did talk to the players in both clubhouses. I was glad to have that chance. Mr. Angelos and I had some topics we were going to discuss, and we'll discuss those later. We've already made arrangements to do that." http://m.orioles.mlb.com/news/article/1208...-from-the-heart

QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 04:41 AM) That discussion has been around since the 90s. You could even say the Life is Immitating Media. The more you show, the more people start getting involved. I would bet well more than half the people looting and stealing are just doing it and have nothing to do with the anger over the guys death. Yeah, I can't remember the exact movie....it was a Jennifer Lopez one, something about a train and kids trying to copy some of the same exact moves from the movie. Money Train, maybe?

Baltimore Riots
But the spark that ignited Monday's pandemonium likely started with high school students on social media. An online flier advertised a "purge" after school Monday, starting at Baltimore's Mondawmin Mall, The Baltimore Sun reported. The film "The Purge" (actually, there are two films) is about a dystopian future society in which all laws are suspended for one 24-hour period every year. Baltimore authorities got wind of the plans, Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said. "We had gotten information yesterday that at Mondawmin Mall, we're going to have a large 'purge' of high school students from across the city," Batts said. "We had pretty close to about 250 to 300 police officers staged in or around Mondawmin Mall at the time the youth got out of school." A case of life imitating art? We always have these debates about violent video games results in "real world" violence, and now we have a movie (seemingly) directly influencing real life events. from www.cnn.com http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/...ory.html#page=1 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/...ory.html#page=1

QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:40 AM) when there is oppression, people will get fed up and protest. in this case the actions of the dept of the police is what is or has trigger what you are seeing. what people are seeing is still a continue act of oppression thru police corruption. peaceful protest, to bring this attention of the action of citizens, is them getting fed up. this was suppose to bring it to the attentions of the "powers to be", it was meant to do good. however this kind of thuggery, that was an independent different group, does not justified the senseless need to cause millions of dollars of damages and stealing. just b/c they can. the lack of jobs for economical ends, moving out of the country is not a reason to justify this barrage of needless looting and violence on the pretense of 1 innocent death. there could have been a better why, if these so call peaceful ministers would have insisted on a federal mediation group to investigate this. instead of allowing the police force to so call police itself. nah! there is a genuine lack of confidence in the present form of the local politics. this is the real reason for this. this stupidity of the few police officers, tarnish the rep of the rest of the Police, men and woment who deserves credit for putting it on the line, being front and center between chaos and bedlam and the innocent people, are being looked at as the bad person. i have said this is the past, how to fix it. tear it down and rebuild the system, by a drastic means. by getting the federal group to step in and clean house. That's the point, nobody trusts anything that smacks of Federal intervention/mediation, the police departments won't accept it and it's just not an effective way to run a department...it would be like if a teacher had someone coming to their class and take notes and monitoring them on a class by class basis (to make sure they were teaching the curriculum/syllabus), if someone doesn't trust you to do the job you were hired to do, then there's something wrong with the system. There's no confidence in either local, state or national politicians right now. Certainly not TRUST. This type of incident has happened so many times and been covered up or pushed under the rug that minority communities feel at this point there's no other alternative than attempting to garner as much media attention as possible. Actually, Elijah Cummings is probably the most respected of all, the Congressman who gave the eulogy and who's widely-expected to run for Barbara Mikulski's Senate seat.
