Joining the board
QUOTE (venom4789 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 01:43 PM) While i am sure there are there moments it seems this board doesnt have the random trolls that continually pop up over there, or posters who continue to say the same thing over and over. That's mostly TUC's outlandish attempts at humor.

Joining the board
QUOTE (venom4789 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) Sorry if this is in the wrong area but wasnt able to find a thread or folder where to post if your a new poster and to introduce yourself. just figured i would say hi since i have just recently joined the board. I have been a huge white sox fan my whole life, originally a poster at whitesox.com but after recent updates to their message board and constant bickering over politics i have decided to move to greener pastures. Seems like a lot of people know baseball pretty well here so hoping it leads to great conversations, discusions and even arguements. My favorite white sox player black jack My favorite game i went to was game 2 against the redsox in 05 when iguchi hit the big homerun. Favorite player in baseball is ken griffey jr, i could watch him swing a bat for hours. And the play that always sticks out to me was watching robin ventura try to charge nolan ryan, i was a huge fan of venture and just remember being devasted when he got put in the headlock. Looking forward to contributing and having fun. 2001-2004 it was quite an interesting/polarized atmosphere at whitesox.com, all the hate for KW and just a very few defenders. How that all changed in 2005.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
I think a lot of agents are going to be wary of dealing with the Astros...this seems to fit with how they go about doing business. In the long run, they might win with this tactic on the financial side, but it tends to leave a bad taste. Whether it's this situation, the release of the proprietary database trade information, Bud Norris' comments, lots of former and current players (anonymously), the low-balling contract strategy with Springer/Singleton/Dominguez/Grossman being offered long-term extensions before they've even played at the major league level...let's just say their path and the Cubs' will always be intriguing ones to follow, that's for sure. If they succeed, they'll change baseball even more to the quant/SABR side. If not, another setback or black eye.

Midseason Top 50
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) Sigh, already a projected #2 without a pitch thrown. That's just asinine. And going mostly off this collegiate season, which statistically was better than the previous one except W/L record. It's like movie critics. Popular to pile on when there's some fresh blood on the water, instead of focusing on the positives.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 09:30 AM) That's how it works? So potentially could have two top 10 picks next year?? That makes me a little less worried. So essentially we're just like the Cubs then....maybe 2017, maybe 2018, maybe never. Not to mention the fact that they would almost be FORCED to draft collegiate players with those two high draft picks, because they'd have lost another year of Abreu and Sale in their primes. Which would make that draft even more high risk for the Sox.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) No To me, it's Montas. I meant among active pitchers. Others will say Danish or Beck. Or Erik Johnson. But there's certainly nobody we can count on between now and 2015 Opening Day. In fact, I'd say the one best equipped to do it is our new closer, Jake Petricka. It's (theoretically) also the death of Alexei Ramirez's White Sox career (since there will be no clear path to competitiveness in 2015 and 2016 would be 50/50), and likely the end of Viciedo's as well, if for no other reason than Boras being his agent.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 09:13 AM) If Rodon wants as much or more than the #1 over all pick then f*** him. Good luck improving next years draft status. Rodon needs the Sox more than the Sox need him. I'm not so sure about that...we have no pitching prospects to speak of right now. Angel Sanchez might be our best pitching prospect right now, after two teams gave up on him in the past 6 months. Boras knows that, and he knows we don't want to go into the free agent market for pitching...he also knows the White Sox, unlike the Cubs, can't push the rebuild another year into the future without hemorrhaging another 10-15% of fans with season ticket packages. Essentially, it would force the White Sox to spend in the offseason and make a splash big enough to move the meter on season tickets...not even James Shields is going to do that, probably. It would have to be Scherzer or Price, and no way the White Sox have the pieces to trade for Price (goodbye Tim Anderson, Hawkins and Micah Johnson or Montas) or the desire to extend him since he's also left-handed (like Lester). Just imagine the 0.001% chance we keep hearing...if he doesn't sign, this board will be in full meltdown mode for two or three weeks and you'll see threads all offseason about how cheap the White Sox are if they don't shell out money for Scherzer/Lester/Shields...which is probably the last thing they should be doing logically at this point in the rebuild. It will be viewed as White Flag II...unless Rodon's arm falls off or he never ends up making much of an impact in the majors.

Samardzija/Hammel Traded to A's
QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 09:09 AM) A lot of it rides on how JS does in the AL, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Dempster and Garza stink it up when they were dealt to AL teams by the Cubs? The AL is a different animal, especially the AL West. I don't blame Beane for making this trade because I love seeing teams "go for it" but it's a very high risk high reward type trade on their end. If they win the WS then they can probably live with whatever the guys they traded to the Cubs wind up doing. Offensively, the Angels and Astros (will soon) have the ability to be scary, but the Rangers are way down and the Mariners are all pitching and Safeco. The Angels have Trout, of course...but Pujols and Hamilton aren't what they once were, and that line-up's been missing some thunder ever since they traded Trumbo. The reason they're winning is 1) Trout and 2) starting pitching.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) I say you are right if not more. i remember some numbers bouncing around 8 - 9 million. but with the way all info was being thrown around, i am prob wrong. that's what he was supposedly asking for...$8 million...that was rumored around the week before the draft the White Sox obviously don't even have the space to go to $9 million, and I'm sure they would fold and admit defeat in the face of that demand, which would only end up making both Hahn and Boras look dumb in the end

Samardzija/Hammel Traded to A's
QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 08:55 AM) I think the Cubs did well. Samardjiza is a nice pitcher but that's as far as it goes. He's not worth the $100 mil he's asking for. If he's worth that then Sale is worth about $140-$150 mil when his time comes for a long term deal. I think it was a good deal for both teams but Oakland better win it this year because I think Beane unloads Samardjiza in the offseason. No title + trading away a top 6-7 prospect in MLB + eventually trading JS = Failure. As for the Northsiders lack of pitching, they'll probably start acquiring some this offseason. God knows they have the $$ and prospects for it. If they don't it'd be a real slap in the face to their fans. All depends on what they get back for him. Oakland has six pitchers already...they have Milone parked there in AAA with a 2.62 ERA and 6-0 record in his last 11 starts but no spot in the rotation nevertheless. If anything, it's more like the Jackson for Hudson/Holmberg move, or its equivalent in 2014. Sacrificing part of the future for a "win now/no excuses" mentality amongst the players. With Cespedes on the market after 2015...their window is this year and next. That's pretty much it before they have to reload/retool again.

Return for Dunn
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) I think Taylor will get a shot eventually. I just wanted to give you some more s***, because it's fun. Except he's four years older than Viciedo. Essentially, he's got this year and next to be in the prime of his career, if he figures out how to use his height/leverage and throw up some decent homer totals...and he's only been given about 75 career major league at-bats up until now to find that out (compared to someone like Joe Borchard, for example).

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 07:20 AM) 99.9999%. The Sox won't lose him over a little bit of money, but at this point, they also want to save some money too, so come the 11th hour, both sides will flinch and it will get done. I'm guessing $6.5 million. If I was Boras, I would just say two words. "Manny Ramirez (Scott Downs/Jeff Keppinger/Felipe Paulino). You're going to quibble over $250-500,000 over your future frontline starter, c'mon Rick Hahn. You went to Kellogg School and Harvard Law. You're not dumb. The White Sox need Carlos Rodon as much as he needs them. Besides, nobody's coming to games as it is, and you already have two of the top ten players in baseball. Plus, I know you're not going to spend $100+ million in free agency, Carlos is your best chance to have a winner again on the SouthSide."

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
Damn Rock/Bucket AND anyone who uses "complicated" statistical analyses to make their points...if they can explain bwar and fwar and nuclear war and +WRC, they should be banned and start their own "value over replacement" sites for geeks and pocket-protector wearing nerds. USA! USA! USA! Would MLB even allow the White Sox or Astros to steal thunder from the ASG Selections by announcing Aiken and Rodon signings? I'm sure they would prefer Monday press conferences.

Samardzija/Hammel Traded to A's
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 02:20 PM) It's really this. The Cubs fans on Facebook are going to be pissed. The Cubs fans who watched the news the other day and saw the Cubs swept the BoSox at Fenway are going to be pissed but the Cubs SoxTalk equivalent, I think it's bleedcubbieblue, is probably ecstatic and they should be. I think Billy Beane has to be worried about Addison Russell's long term health to even make this deal. I don't understand the inclusion of Hammel either. If I am Oakland I don't see the need to replace Strailey/Milone with Hammel. Looking at recent playoff team history, Beane's taking no chances. He said the probability that Gray, Kazmir, Chavez and the two Cubs starters make every single start the 2nd half is nearly zero. Keep in mind, these are all going to be new workload territories in terms of IP for Gray and especially Chavez....and Kazmir hasn't exactly pitched 200 innings for five consecutive seasons, either. Milone is insurance, just with a lot higher upside (2.62 ERA and 6-0 over his last 11 starts) than Straily. Same thing with Hammel's presence on the A's. They're both more experienced than Straily, as well.

Chris Sale wins Final Vote
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 07:17 PM) Caulfield this is not the time for tangents or failed Steve Phillips' trades. Scott Kazmir has not been better than Sale by any metric. Nevertheless, if the A's win the World Series this year, Moneyball II the movie will prominently feature the acquisitions/subplots of Kazmir and Jesse Chavez.

2014 FIFA World Cup
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 10:52 PM) I think Roma is loaning him back to Seattle as the deal has been reported. Sounds like he will play with the Sounders until summer 2015. Roma has two World Cup right backs, Brazilian Maicon and Greece's Torosidis. Maicon's contract is up after this upcoming season so Yedlin can likely share time with Torosidis then. Roma is in the Champions League this season and if they get back when Yedlin arrives he should be able to play some by then. I don't see him being the starter right away unless he really impresses, but he should get enough matches. If Roma was in the Champions League when Bradley was there he might have stayed. He wasn't good enough to beat out their midfielders. For some perspective, the guy who took Bradley's spot at Roma (Radja Nainggolan) didn't even make Belgium's World Cup roster. I'm listening to a BBC podcast now talking about how they think the US is the fittest team at the tournament. Training the team that hard may have resulted in all those hamstring injuries, but it earned the team some respect. England is searching for any way to get the team to play better. It might start with getting better talent. England's roster is solid, but unspectacular. The only one who really impressed me with Sturridge. Sterling was okay. Rooney had his moments, especially against Uruguay...but couldn't push them over the top or convert on numerous opportunities. That generation of players with Terry, Lampard, Michael Owen, Beckham....Gerrard was, like David Villa and Torres, a show of his former self.

Chris Sale wins Final Vote
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 07:12 PM) Really happy Rob Neyer, Jeff Passan and Keith Law all came to Chris's defense. I cannot believe the players believe Scott Kazmir was more deserving. There is no way any left-handed hitter should not have voted for Sale. Kazmir's a great story. One-time top prospect traded by the Mets to the Rays for Victor Zambrano...fell all the way down to independent ball a couple of seasons ago, now a key rotation piece in arguably the World Series favorite for the AL.

2014 Films Thread
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 06:07 PM) Scariest movie of 2014??? Under the Skin might be the weirdest, combined with scariest. But the fact that it's Scarlett Johansson makes it a bit surreal. The most popular one, and it's going back to last year, is definitely THE CONJURING. That movie played for weeks and weeks and weeks in Indonesia.

Teams Interested in Viciedo
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 05:57 PM) Not if he keeps hitting like he has the last month. I also saw that he's the 8th rated LFer in the league defensively this year. This has to be some kind of joke. It's why I take all the defensive metrics with a grain of salt until they figure out a way to improve them.

Teams Interested in Viciedo
QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) I am sorry, you are right, I was typing too fast and forgot I sentence. I have no problem to let him walk after his contract is up. again, I would like to revisit the trade options during the offseason, if we can not get a good rtn. sea needs this trade the sox can live without making the trade. We control his rights for three more years, should we so choose to. We can certainly non-tender him, but Hahn had that option with DeAza and Beckham this past offseason and didn't go that route.
