If there was no tanking, that means the White Sox would have kept Giolito with an extension, for example. I'm not even sure what players from 2023 that are no longer on the roster that you could make an argument for retaining/extending. Which would have meant KC Royals-esque FA 2023-24 spending, but that might still get you a .500 team, AT BEST. Would you extend Moncada, for example? We can all argue for keeping Cease with an extension, but for how much and how many years? And what's the result with Dylan on this team for 2024 vs. acquiring two Top 100 prospects for the next competitive team?

Wasn't Berroa something like the #12 prospect in the Seattle system...and at least a potential candidate to start, at least that was suggested at the time of the trade? Guess Seattle's system is just really pretty bad, or the idea about him possibly being utilized as a starter has flown the coop already.

Eaton and Avi Garcia both had really strong 6ish and 4+ fWAR seasons in RF but certainly not on a consistent basis...and Eaton also played a lot of CF as well. Dye was pretty much a statue due to his leg when he came to us, but certainly still an offensive presence. Earlier in his career had a very strong arm as well, but his habit of catching the ball flat footed or going backwards and/or trying to throw with all of his momentum going forward after an extended run-up didn't serve him well, either.

Now the Red Sox pretty much have to sign Snell or Montgomery to be taken seriously by anyone...also, at least in his own mind, JR validated once again in not doling out extensions to Gio, Cease, Kopech, etc.

Keep Montgomery and Schultz healthy and on a steady pace to their major league debuts. Do everything to turn Mr. Gonzalez around at SS, especially as if it becomes likelier that Montgomery might be ticketed for 3B or 1B/DH or potentially even corner outfield. Obviously, third base would be the next best outcome.

Except that was associated with Greg Walker's "lift and pull" philosophy, which at least occasionally paid off with 3 run homers. On the plus side, DeLoach seemingly might be a pretty decent defender, at least the two corner spots.

It's also not like the value of bringing him up at that point is worth the slight attendance boost. One of the problems with the rebuild was miss timing the arrival of talent waves and veteran additions. Barring unexpected FA spending, they're at least three years from being a legitimately competitive team. And that requires a lot of things to go right. The other key points is that there's just no way JR will authorize the kind of extension KC gave to Witt, Jr., to Montgomery.

Also zero reason to blow a year of control unless he's legitimately earned it...forcing the issue.
