Sox trade Matthew Thompson to Cubs for old friend Bailey Horn
caulfield12 replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
For a very specialized role more necessary for postseason. Certainly not as an everyday player. Just like Terrence Gore as PR for the Royals in the mid 2010s when all he could do was run and field. He couldn't hit his way out of a thin and wet paper bag. -
-31 RS/RA Still making way too many mistakes on defense. 9 walks on Sox pitchers. Trade Eloy becomes a realistic clarion call at least.

Too bad June draft order isn't allocated based on worst run differential...

Didn't he basically miss all last season or a bunch of time?

Berroa still needs to improve his control, but he’s the favorite to emerge as Chicago’s closer. The 23-year-old posted a 36.6 K% in the minors last season, which would’ve ranked sixth among MLB relievers. Berroa also recorded a 2.88 FIP despite a 5.37 BB/9 rate, and the White Sox have no one who matches his arm talent in their bullpen. Yahoo.com/sports

If there was no tanking, that means the White Sox would have kept Giolito with an extension, for example. I'm not even sure what players from 2023 that are no longer on the roster that you could make an argument for retaining/extending. Which would have meant KC Royals-esque FA 2023-24 spending, but that might still get you a .500 team, AT BEST. Would you extend Moncada, for example? We can all argue for keeping Cease with an extension, but for how much and how many years? And what's the result with Dylan on this team for 2024 vs. acquiring two Top 100 prospects for the next competitive team?

Wasn't Berroa something like the #12 prospect in the Seattle system...and at least a potential candidate to start, at least that was suggested at the time of the trade? Guess Seattle's system is just really pretty bad, or the idea about him possibly being utilized as a starter has flown the coop already.

Eaton and Avi Garcia both had really strong 6ish and 4+ fWAR seasons in RF but certainly not on a consistent basis...and Eaton also played a lot of CF as well. Dye was pretty much a statue due to his leg when he came to us, but certainly still an offensive presence. Earlier in his career had a very strong arm as well, but his habit of catching the ball flat footed or going backwards and/or trying to throw with all of his momentum going forward after an extended run-up didn't serve him well, either.

Giolito to the Red Sox, 2 years $38.5 million, Y1 opt out
caulfield12 replied to Balta1701's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Now the Red Sox pretty much have to sign Snell or Montgomery to be taken seriously by anyone...also, at least in his own mind, JR validated once again in not doling out extensions to Gio, Cease, Kopech, etc. -
Keep Montgomery and Schultz healthy and on a steady pace to their major league debuts. Do everything to turn Mr. Gonzalez around at SS, especially as if it becomes likelier that Montgomery might be ticketed for 3B or 1B/DH or potentially even corner outfield. Obviously, third base would be the next best outcome.

Sox looking at building in South Loop

We can't even afford two consecutive Zack Wheeler deals...let alone a new stadium and urban development projects. Just sell to someone who will actually commit to ONE $100+ million contract, JR. -

Z.Wheeler, 3 years, $126 million extension with the Phillies, no options or opt-outs following the Bryce Harper similar commitment https://www.mlb.com/news/zack-wheeler-phillies-extension -
Trade Flexen while he’s hot… And looks like Pillar just made the team, lol.

Grifol: DeJong, Lopez, Maldonado are good on offense
caulfield12 replied to Quin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Witt, Jr., career MiLB plate appearances....744 Colson Montgomery......826 This would make more sense if the White Sox were going to spend in FA like the Royals did heading into this upcoming season. -
Except that was associated with Greg Walker's "lift and pull" philosophy, which at least occasionally paid off with 3 run homers. On the plus side, DeLoach seemingly might be a pretty decent defender, at least the two corner spots.

Okay Brooks, Our Chuck, Merkinpuff and Stone Pony. (Don't think you will see those words from Fegan this year.) -
It's also not like the value of bringing him up at that point is worth the slight attendance boost. One of the problems with the rebuild was miss timing the arrival of talent waves and veteran additions. Barring unexpected FA spending, they're at least three years from being a legitimately competitive team. And that requires a lot of things to go right. The other key points is that there's just no way JR will authorize the kind of extension KC gave to Witt, Jr., to Montgomery.

Also zero reason to blow a year of control unless he's legitimately earned it...forcing the issue. -
Lunacy. Doesn't have an arm any better than Pollock and likely worse for that spot. Same way we got stuck with Vaughn and Sheets and even Palka out there. Flies directly in the face of all this incessant preaching about defense.

Startung to get a feeling they will go with a bigger name in Leyland's son eventually over Jirschele.
