I'm not sure why it's a surprise they're doing nothing for now. I too wish they would do something. They have expressed faith in this group all along and it is not a surprise they want to see what a full lineup would do together vs. below .500 teams up to the ASB (except Minn. right before). Not suggesting their approach is correct. But they have said the same mantra all along. Then again it all depends how one defines doing nothing. GM's and asst. GM's and scouts dont just turn off their phones. Williams has a well known rep for being aggressive and its for a reason. That he is not consumating trades at the moment doesn't necessarily equate with doing nothing. Even a small move like the addition of the Arizona farmhand indicates they are, at the very least, planning. After the ASB there are 19 days til the deadline. Plenty of time to get things done. You run the risk of course of something happening to your tradeable players but it can go the other way too (more frenzied market). This is one of the things that makes this sport great.

White Sox vs. Marlins, 6/18/07 (W)

I think it is stupid as well. The only possible upside is certain players start doing better, it increases their value, and other teams get more desperate to add talent. I do not see either Cleveland or Detroit collapsing to a major degree, not to mention Minn. -

Well the big news from the 2 hour Sox brain trust meeting this afternoon ... KW on the pregame basically says they (the players) want to see how they perform when Podsednik and Erstad get back, to see if the team can go on a run. Konerko was at the meeting, as was Guillen and Hahn and of course Williams. So it does not look like any trades will be made for now. My guess is they will evaluate where they are in two weeks, like July 1st. -
Guillen said last week firing any of the coaches "sends the wrong message" (his quote). Now, people can agree with that or not. However it seems to me he is putting the onus on the Sox players. Coaches generally get fired when they are lazy or don't put the work in or are abrasive and can't get along with players and staff and mgmt. Or if the players hate them. Tim Raines as an example was not retained because he did not work hard enough (putting in the hours and helping the team prepare). Per Guillen. None of these appear to be the issue with Walker. Personally I dont much care if he stays or goes but this seems to be Sox mgmt. thought process on the matter.

QUOTE(Wanne @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 08:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> OK Mrs Walker....where does this team go from here?!? Gut the team...right!??! YOU seem to have all the answers. To me it is fairly simple. You let your injured players get back, the ones that will come back this yr. anyways, and you let them play and do your best. See how many games you can win. In the mean time Williams should burn the phone lines to get the best poss. deals for the FA's to be like Dye and Iguchi and Buehrle. Get the best major league ready talent you can get. If not then get the best high end prospects you can get. If you can't sign Buehrle then trade him too. Decide who you want to keep for 2008 and go from there. As for changing coaches you really dont lose anything by letting loose Walker except for all the stuff the average fan never sees. Nor really cares about. Things like clubhouse disruption and loyalty to staff and reputation around baseball for making coaches scapegoats, etc. Not saying I agree with all that but there would be fallout the average fan wouldn't see. Again the average fan wouldn't care but it would occur. The thing is the GM and mgr. have already said the coach or coaches are not the problem or the biggest problem anyways. So the venom should really be directed higher up. The prospects the Sox have, for the most part they are not ready. We have all seen them, they are just not ready and some or many may never be. I would say many, or even most.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 11:28 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> There's another question that has yet to be answered. What is the job description of a Hitting Coach, what exactly are his responsibilities. I have mentioned this before. From what I have read apparantly there are people on this site with connections to the team. Why not ask for an interview with one of the Sox people, perhaps a chief instructional guy? Get an interview with someone who knows the answer as to what a hitting coach does day-to-day.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 12:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They did it a few years ago with Lee in the middle of his hitting streak several years ago. You can do better than that, one guy? Not trying to be difficult but wondering who you mean when you say time and time again. As I have stated it may be a point where they have tuned him out, it is not unusual and it happens with coaches. If so then he needs to go. If he is adding pressures and not helping these guys relax then he needs to go. Maybe for a change for change sake he needs to go.

Where KW is going with this team

QUOTE(quickman @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 12:21 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Let me thorw this one out there. lets say we go young and I am not against that as long as that is what is portrayed to the fans. Do you trust KW to build a team? Or is KW the next jerry Krause? just throwing it out there. I don't think KW can build a team, he can add to a team, he can get good value free agents, but he may not be able to rebuild a team. Just something to think about. Hey you make some good posts, tend to agree with your thoughts on the prospects although I hold out hope for a couple. Hope and 3 bucks get you a Starbucks though. As for Williams+rebuilding, he will try to do it as he goes, meaning on the fly. Time will tell if thats the right way. Very tough to restock and stay a contender, witness this year. I am not sure he has the patience for a total rebuild nor I do not think this market will have the patience either. -
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Look at the history of him retooling certain players' swings. They go from line drive hitters to guys trying to hit for power. Time and time again. Interesting comment, who are you referring to? If you say Pierzynski I can see your point but who else are you thinking?

Garcia is now fessing up that his shoulder has been bothering him since spring training. Fastball peaking in the mid 80's. He has been trying to gut it out in Philly but it's not happening. This is why he was traded. Sox felt he had lots of wear and tear and his best days were behind him.

Minor league pitchers vs. major league hitters, not good.

Walk a guy to load the bases and face ARod. Are these White Sox pitchers that dumb? Maybe the kid they picked from Miami of Ohio today has more smarts, that's a good school. Yeah nice, a grand slam. Nice.

QUOTE(TheOcho @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 10:10 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My vote for the dumbest thing said in this thread tonight. Well everyone has their opinion I guess but I agree with you. If it was too much to pay for an established guy like Konerko but $8M for an unproven HS pitcher is ok?

Here is the dirt on Leroy Hunt from BA: 167. Leroy Hunt, rhp School: Sacramento CC. Class: So. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-6. Wt.: 220. Birthdate: 11/28/87. Scouting Report: The Reds drafted Hunt in 2005 as an outfielder out of high school and followed him to Sacramento City College. He had enormous raw power as a hitter but never seemed to get comfortable at the plate against good velocity, so Sac City moved him to the mound to take advantage of his arm strength. While he remains raw, Hunt has one of the best fastballs in the state. It has heavy sink and boring armside run, and Hunt throws it in the 90-94 mph range, touching 95 at times. His secondary stuff (slider, changeup) is almost nonexistent, but that didn't stop him from a 40-inning scoreless streak this spring, including a pair of outings against better-regarded Matt Thompson of Santa Rosa (Calif.) Junior College. Hunt needs to develop either his slider or changeup to have a second pitch, a concern because he hasn't shown much aptitude so far. He's committed to Oral Roberts, but should be an easy sign. With his intimidating size (6-foot-6, 220 pounds) and fastball, he profiles as a power reliever. Don't know if anyone heard DJ talk about Jermaine Dye. Supposedly he is out tonite with a problem with his chronically bad knee, it is getting drained and he will have to nurse it for a few weeks. Didn't seem to think he'd miss any time but found the comment interesting. Further I'm believing he is also out due to mental health, not just his knee. But it would explain in part why he has looked so horribly slow out there. Second, the Iguchi error was a horrible hop. He still should have gotten it blocked but it was a really nasty hop.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I still predict the Sox will take John Ely with their next pick. We need to trade him. He has no chance to succeed in the Cell pitching the way he does. If the SS is still there, Jackson, they will take him is my guess.
-
QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ....its also interesting to see that the A's would have picked him had we not gotten him... The Giants were all over him too. Not surprising since he's from a Bay Area program.

They are raving about the Twins pick, a CF who coincidentally played some football too in Kentucky.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How long ago? I haven't heard anything recently. Main's problem isn't velocity, but developing consistent secondary pitches. We shouldn't shy away from this. Its on his Baseball America scouting report. He had shoulder tendonitis. Me no likey even though it was last yr. and he was said to be recovered. Too risky. But as a CF, yes.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes. Even if he never reaches the majors and his arm gives out, atleast give me someone with the potential to become a top of the rotation starter. Our safe first round selections haven't been successful as it is, why not take a risk? If they pick him it might be as a CF. This is a guy who has already had arm tendonitis which is a red flag to me.

QUOTE(beautox @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 02:50 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> drop that 10mil we saved on garcia on porcello. We've got Danks and hes a Boras client. Danks is a Boras client, are you sure about that?
-
QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 02:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> porcello is a boras client, probably isn't a coincedence he's fallen this far into the first round, even if he was available at 25, i dont see KW dealing with boras Agreed.

Isn't Porcello in the Boras stable?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:24 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The whole world knew about Joe's back, so I doubt anyone was busting down the door to take a chance on a guy who is getting really close to free agency, has Borass as an agent, has a bad back, and refused to have surgery. How many teams do you think would have actually paid up for that? Excellent point. The answer to your question is prob. "not many". If any. -
Why listen if it aggravates you so much? What is the point, the guys who said most of the callers are not that bright are correct. And the guys who say Rongey is not the most knowledgeable baseball guy and spins everything are also correct. Once you have those two elements of the equation figured out you realize the postgame show is what it is. Basically a waste of time.
