Wade Kapteyn was taken in the 40th round by the Twins. The Sox took him in the 20th round out of Illiana Christian HS in 2006. The Baseball America scouting report then said he could blossom into a first rounder after college. He is now a draft eligible soph at Evansville. He had an ERA over 9 this year in 10 starts. Just throwing that out there. Also, Jimmy Parque got drafted heh.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 12:25 PM) Jonathan Weaver has a projectable frame and hasn't signed with a four-year school. The 6-foot-3, 185 pounder has an easy, fluid delivery. His fastball sits in the upper 80s and touches the low 90s, and his breaking ball shows promise. He has committed to Heartland (Ill.) CC. -BA. Draft and foll....oh wait. If we sign Danks, I would think he is immediately one of the best baserunners and the best defensive outfielder in the system. He is a premier athlete. There are questions with his bat, but I'm not sure I buy into that. Oh and if we sign Danks, I shotty his AAP.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 07:11 PM) I like the movement on Hudson's pitches, seems like a poor-man's version of stuff wise MacDougal, but clearly with much better control. Is it possible to have worse control than him as far as pro pitchers are concerned?

A guy I went to junior high and high school with, Jason Kipnis, just got taken in the 4th round by the Padres. Cool.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) I've seen him in person as well and his swing is fluid and he makes everything look easy. His defense is a major plus (and the arm a freaking "cannon"). Who are you talking about? Beckham or Morel?

That sound like Ehren Wassermann to anyone else?

Pretty cool, we kept seeing a Royals scout at the Mizzou games this year. My roommate at Mizzou stayed in contact with him and sat with him while he scouted Melville when he pitched against the local HS. The scout loved him, not a big surprise the Royals took other than the fact that they have to pay him.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) I'm thinking there might be concerns over the strength of competition with a guy who played at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Just a hunch. Not really, that's actually just Cal Poly. They play in the same league as Fullerton, Long Beach St. and Irvine. Looking at their schedule, that's one thing you can't question.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:59 PM) Kyle Russell to the Dodgers. He could have been a nice pickup. Yeah, except he's Joe Borchard. The other Cal Poly guy just went to the Brewers, somehow that makes me feel better.

15 BB in 239 at bats? I didn't know it was possible to be any good and have a bad walk rate in college.

Solid pick by Pittsburgh. Jordy Mercer, Team USA SS from Ok St. He impressed me this year in Columbia.

Beckham Huzzaaaah!
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:31 PM) You can't really be mad about Bechkham, BUT I would have rather had Smoak or Crow. Yeah, or Wallace as well. If the baseball draft was more about need I'd probably be happier, but I don't think we got the best available. I'm not upset, just slightly disappointed we didn't get one of the 3 guys I actively liked.

So now we/I start hoping Jordan Danks falls to us in the 3rd and we actually take him.

Congrats Aaron. Sorry you got picked by the Nats.

I'd be happy with Crow, Smoak would be cool, Wallace wouldn't disappoint. C'mon Sox, don't f this up.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 11:56 PM) Dan, thats exactly why I love Gibson. He has a tremendous arm, a plus secondary pitch and with a proper pitching coach I think you can turn him into a pretty good pro. He also has a great build. Plus, I don't think he'll end up going in the first round or two, which means there is a chance that he turns into a very good value pick (since guys with his arm/build don't usually grow on trees). Well, he did own at the Cape last summer, only Crow did better. If he does well there again and has a good season next year (doesn't even have to be dominant), he'll be a first rounder. Missouri is beginning to earn a reputation of developing pitchers so I think his issues might be different than a good pitching coach. He is projectable, but right now he has velocity and one plus pitch. His fastball is freaking terrible right now. He needs to gain weight, but he sure as hell is trying from what I hear. He is on a 5,000 calorie diet or something stupid (2k being typical for most people, 3k for athletes) and can't add to his frame.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 10:15 PM) Update about Crow: from my source (i love saying this sorry I feel so journalistical but I actually do have one with Crow). the teams on him the hardest are Baltimore, Washington, Houston and the Royals still. So could get interesting... Is this his surprisingly (and disappointingly) unattractive girlfriend? BTW, my friends went to Truman's to watch the Saturday regional game. She was their waitress, someone said something about how Crow should have been saved for that game and she agreed. I thought that was funny. I shouldn't say bad things about her, I went to Truman's for the Sunday game and she was working and then she recognized me downtown Monday. It's a good thing I'm back home and 7 hours away lol. As for draft discussion...if the Sox pass on Crow I'll be upset, but I'm not completely sold on Crow being automatic like I was a month ago. I guess that's always a risk with draftees, but I would have laughed if he didn't go #1 a couple months ago. I still think he should go in the top 5 though. I'd be happy with any of the college guys floating around the 8 range other than Castro. I don't see a huge difference between most of the guys anyway.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) I dont know much about Missouri but was Gibson a starter at some point in the season? Yeah, he got moved to the pen a few weeks ago because the bullpen was so bad and he had some time as closer last year. He wasn't doing all that great as a starter anyway.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 1, 2008 -> 02:39 PM) Mizzu freaking choked. Gibson choked. He lost both the regional games and had a blown save in the 9th of a Big 12 Tournament game that would have locked up a spot in the championship game for Mizzou. Someone needs to teach that kid a moving fastball. He gets lit up when he sees guys that can catch up to it. I think a lot of guys have realized they need to look fastball every pitch. His slider is sick, but if his fastball is a straight arrow, he's not going to be a good pro. Also, that Ole Miss closer, Bittle, was freaking awful. Sure he struck out a guy for every out, but Mizzou has a terrible offense and he struggled. 1/2 his pitches were in the dirt, he walked a few, gave up a few hits and a couple runs that should have ended Ole Miss' season. Pro hitters would stare at his junk in the dirt and then he would be in trouble. Oh, and Jason, I said Mizzou would lose the next 2 games. Gibson decided to suck the last month plus for the most part and the bullpen couldn't get a guy out all season. Therefore, Mizzou was a one man team (Crow). A lot of wasted talent on that team this year.

FutureSox 2008 MLB Draft Discussion
If the Sox take Castro, they need to quit the draft. Seriously, that's so embarrassing to even be discussing or connected to drafting him at 8. Any player who hit .167 a year ago and only has one season hitting over .300 (with numbers this year that aren't anywhere near top 10 in the country status) shouldn't be considered for the first round, little #8. I don't care if he is the greatest defensive catcher the Pac 10 has ever seen.

OH YES, the DSL is BACK!
Lovesquis Santana on the A's. Beat that name. Yobanny Reyes might come close.

Yeah, Crow has pretty good command of his fastball. I always thought that was his best attribute, but I didn't get to see today's start (stupid ESPNU). He's a legit top 10 pick, that's for sure.
