Eduardo Jose Escobar Born: 01/05/1989 Birthplace: Aragua, Venezuela Height: 5' 10" Weight: 150 (150?! Get in the weight room, son.) Bats: S Throws: R Position: SS 2006: (from milb.com player highlights) Hit .236 (29-for-123) with 17 RBIs in 46 Venezuelan Summer League games... went 7-for-13 in stolen base attempts. 2007: DSL White Sox2 .291/.359/.344 (.703 OPS) 5 2B, 4 3B, 18 RBI, 56 R, 22 BB, 45 K in 247 at-bats. 19/33 SB He's with Great Falls as their leadoff hitter this year so the Sox must think relatively highly of him to have him go from the DSL to their higher rookie team as a 19 year-old. He hit a HR in the Voyagers' opener and went 2-3 with a double, 2 walks, 2 RBI and 2 runs in game 2. Good start.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 02:05 AM) Is it odd that Lee Fischer, our 46th round pick, was assigned to Kanny? Yes, but he's terrible. They probably are just using him as a utility infielder. He's mostly solid on d. Maybe the I's needed another IF.

I jumped on DLS early and I'm jumping on Eduardo Escobar early. I saw this from an article in the Great Falls Tribune a few days ago and made sure to pay attention to this kid: He hit a HR last night and went 2-3 with a double and 2 walks tonight. He's only 19 and is a switch-hitter. Hit .291 in the DSL last year. Sounds like a prospect to me.

Cool piece on 8th rounder Kevin Dubler. Link Positive news on the Upchurch front. Upchurch says if money is right, he'll go pro.
-
Tyler Kuhn has signed. He's gonna be playing for Great Falls. He was a college senior, so a no brainer sign.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 14, 2008 -> 09:12 PM) wow, Eldred with a homer in each game tonight, including a grandslam. He is a beastly AAAA player. Charlotte is looking like a scary team in the international league now. Charlotte won game one, and is winning game 2. Whisler did his thing in game 1. Poreda with a rough AA debut, going 6 innings, giving 6 hits, 4 ER (4 R), but no BB's and K'd 5. Birmingham lost. He retired the first 12 he faced. Considering he didn't walk anyone or give up any HRs I'd say that's good for a debut.

I'm probably biased, but I really like Robin Ventura as an announcer. I wish he would do it more often than he does.

I saw 20th rounder Justin Greene on Bristol's roster. I also found an article about him that gives a bit of background on him. White Sox take FMU's Greene

Haha go Lee. He just lost his starting job to a freshman, now he's in Low A ball. Gotta love it lol.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 03:21 AM) cook not in lienup for bham. does that mean he's moving up? Possible, but I think it would be reasonable to think he got the day off because he's their horse and they just clinched.

Most of the 'wasted' picks are late. Danks not signing would be the highest questionable sign the Sox have failed on in at least a few years I think.
-
Greg Norton HRd against the Cubs tonight. Norton, you're the greatest!
-
Hey, Jerry Owens is alive. 3-5 with a SB. Carter had 3 scoreless, game got suspended due to rain. Bummer.

Take a look at the closers in the Sox org right now

If you figure the closer is the best reliever, each team is bound to have one. None of the K rates are amazing, but the HR rates are nice. Remember Jeff Bajenaru and Dwayne Pollok? Haha, it's funny to look back and old minor league rosters (thanks thebaseballcube.com) and laugh at some of the names. Wassermann did work his way through as a closer though. -
Knights blow late lead, lose 3-2 Bourgeois 2-4 Barons lost 6-2 Javier Castillo 2-4, 2B, K Hogs won 6-2 over Frederick Retherford 1-3, 2B, RBI, R, K Poreda 6 IP, 2 R, 2 K, BB, 4 hits Kanny beat up 15-6 Nothing good of note. Man, what a boring day. No wonder no one bothered to make a thread, heh.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 03:55 PM) He pitched 8.2 innings with Bristol last year, it's a bit of a reach to say he's repeating. He lost a year of development then. Same thing either way. He's in the same position he was in last year.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) I think some of you guys have Nevin ranked a bit high. I'm very curious to see what he does this season because he wasn't as good as advertised last year (albeit it was his professional debut and he's incredibly young). I assume everyone is not counting Josh Fields in the lists? Agreed on Griffith. He's repeating Bristol, that keeps him out of any top prospect list for me, even in this system. I don't actually want to rank guys because so little is known of these drafted guys, but I would rather see Jose Martinez, Brandon Allen, Anthony Carter, Justin Cassel, or Clayton Richard ahead of a few of these drafted guys for now. Beckham, Broadway, Poreda, Danks are probably my top 4 in some order. Shelby, Martinez (hitting .306, power is something I can live without for a 6'5" 19 year old), Carter, Egbert are tier 2. Hard to rank these guys because a hot month would probably switch the order, they are that close in my mind. Since none of the other draft picks scream top prospect yet, I'm gonna say Getz, Allen, Cassel, and Richard are in the next group. With the Sox system, it's picking between a bunch of mediocre and marginal prospects so there isn't much to separate them.
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) not surprising... he said after getting drafted that he wanted to sign real soon... considering Kanny could use him and that he really doesn't need much, if any, time in rookie ball, I could see him starting out in Kanny. It says in the article that he's going to Great Falls.
-
Usually, I like to leave newly drafted guys out of top prospect rankings because they are more unknown than the guys currently in the minors. In a normal year I think we've put the first rounder and maybe another draftee in the top prospect rankings on futuresox. This year though....eck. Danks would be there if he signs.
-
Man, it's nice to have an offense.
-
Travis Otto, Dave's son, is the 49th round pick. From Wheaton North HS. Not even sure if he plays baseball. He does in fact play baseball, which kills a little of the fun out of it for me. Link

Danks signs Boom! Great news all around. Time for the best college defensive CF I've seen in person to get a proper AAP going.
-
Lee Fischer, SS of Missouri, just got drafted by the Sox. He lost his starting job at Mizzou because he was hitting around the Mendoza line. Good defense though. He's from the south suburbs somewhere (don't remember) and I talked to his parents during one of the fall games. They are Sox fans, dad was cool to talk to. This has to be a favor to someone somehow.
