QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 03:40 AM) No way Johnson is faster than Durham, not even close. Micah has developed a very efficient technique for stealing bases (at the Low A level), and he's quick, but he's not flat out 0-60 MPH fast. And I don't see his SB/CS numbers holding up in Winston-Salem and BIRM. Any chance you could link me to wherever you got this information from? It's just the opposite to what I have read. I was of the opinion that Johnson has plus-plus '70' raw speed, but bad base running technique/instincts. This would also be backed up by his fairly poor 75% SB%.

Hayes is signed according to BA. -
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 01:00 AM) He is starting to look like one of the farm's best players. Well let's wait for him to start drawing some walks and/or hitting for power before we get too carried away. A .400+ BABIP can only carry you for so long.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 3, 2011 -> 12:10 AM) Another year comes and goes and we spend nothing in international free agents. So we don't go over slot and we spend nothing in international. Then get confused when our minor leagues are a bit thin. They always spend something... just nothing significant enough to have been reported by Baseball America.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 07:31 AM) I don't understand why people want to doubt Tyler Kuhn. His numbers are essentially the same as last years when nobody was talking about him, but he just happens to be riding an unsustainably high BABIP.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 24, 2011 -> 01:54 AM) That and Saladino is coming off a wrist injury. Those can be death on hitters. There's a big difference between being healthy enough to play and being healthy enough to hit well with wrist injuries. Oh yeah he definitely has a legitimate excuse for coming out of the gate slowly.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 24, 2011 -> 01:23 AM) Viciedo 1/4, 2 K. Saladino 2/2, 2 2B so far. Wilkins is 1/2. Ravelo is 0/2, RBI Petricka 1 IP, 2 K. Saladino's numbers are on the upswing. .192/.286/.384 in May, .276/.348/.448 in June, .333/.400/.487 in last 10. Sickels mentioned him in his minor league notes yesterday: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2011/6/22/2...-june-22nd-2011

Nice start from Herbek. I like him a lot. Think he's a bit of a sleeper.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 19, 2011 -> 10:13 PM) I really like Johnson. Lots of potential there. Real nice 2nd round pick and he had nice velocity which he sustained in the game. You can tell he's got some command issues, but overall, I think he's the type of guy the Sox can help out and really get a lot out of. A lot of people didn't seem to like the Johnson pick, but I'm with you, that was one of the few picks that I was quite happy with. His upside may not be sky high, but he's got decent velocity, a put-away breaking ball and a chance at an average or better change. He could move quickly and become a mid to back of rotation starter. I'll take that in the 2nd round.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 18, 2011 -> 04:21 PM) Years ago, they said the same thing about Wade Boggs. They kept him in minors for years, until age 26 I believe. No power, no speed, average defense, etc. Finally, he stuck with BoSox and he hit something like .360 his rookie year and won the batting title. Eventually got 3000 hits and a HOF career. He became a better hitter in majors. Who's to say it won't happen for Kuhn? At least give him a chance to succeed. Not that you were comparing Kuhn to Boggs or anything, but Boggs had 337 BB/134 SO in 662 Minor League games (2,647 AB). His minor league numbers may not be "sexy", but he was the definition of an 80 contact hitter throughout his career, Majors and minors.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 9, 2011 -> 08:23 AM) And/or in scouting as well. I'm sure there's a reason. There's no way 30+ rounds with no high schoolers is a coincidence. I really like the strategy personally, if, and only if, they can sign a good number of the higher upside high school picks. I think loading up on what you perceive to be the college talent early, while it's still available, and then grabbing the high school talent that inevitably falls (as it always does), makes a lot of sense.

Rienzo a little wild, but the K's are there: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 SO.
-
5 more walks for Leesman this start. He's walked 17 in his last 3 starts (16.1 IP).
-
Someone's going to get great value on Daniel Norris... assuming he's still signable.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 04:38 PM) Rendon is looking for $13 million? WTF am I missing? If you think that's bad, Dylan Bundy's supposedly asking 6 years $30m, and Archie Bradley 5 years $20m. Neither will get close to that much.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 05:05 AM) A closer? No thanks. It says that he has three potentially plus pitches from the left side. That's more than many Major League starters can boast. Baseball America notes:

Tyler Beede is the latest prospect to say that he plans to go to college: http://twitter.com/#!/keithlaw/status/76787057615323136 Vanderbilt commits tend to be pretty strong so wouldn't be surprised if this one turns out to be true. Beede sounds like one of the more polished high school pitchers. Runs his FB up to 95 with advanced secondary pitches and command.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 1, 2011 -> 06:31 PM) Huzzah. He answered my question. Reed is number 60 on BA's draft top 200 for what it's worth. It's tough to be a draftnik/prospecter when your team doesn't have a 1st round pick. College players ranked between #30 and #100 by BA is where I'm starting. Not too many names jumping out though. Andrew Chafin's top of my realistic wish list right now.

Jim Callis with a bit of baseless speculation on the Sox' pick: Chris Reed sounds interesting. Lefty with low-90's FB, power slider, above average change. Not a lot of experience though, but he was born in London!

Buch was effectively wild... 6.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 bb, 3 SO.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 29, 2011 -> 12:21 AM) Unfortunately he is striking out a lot more in May. 10 K to 11 BB in April compared to 17 BB and 26 K in May. At least his average and walk rates are up. I still probably have the highest hopes for him than most people here. You're looking at the wrong rows. 5 BB/16 SO in April, 12 BB/11 SO in May.
