QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 21, 2009 -> 08:58 PM) We have a new layout coming out following the server switch that I think looks spectacular. Considering this will fix the problems the site has been having on Firefox, the new Safari and Google Chrome we want to make a bigger push to make the site great. We have interviews (Mitchell, Dash PR guy Collari and we're working on getting others), prospect rankings, draft updates, commentary from JPN who gets to see the Barons' first hand more than any of us and other tidbits. We're also working on/tinkering with the idea of having player profiles on the site, but we aren't completely sure how that's going to work yet. So our question is what else do you want to see from the site? What could make it better? We could always link the MiLB.com player profiles from the site. If someone sees a players name listed on Future Sox, like the tags, it links to that particular player's profile. Maybe a fancy shmancy intro just for the hell of it?

QUOTE (tommy @ Jun 21, 2009 -> 06:49 PM) Everyone is saying there was no serious damage found, why in the world would he need surgery? He said he feels like he doesn't need surgery. Just confirming what everyone else said and that he feels the same.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jun 21, 2009 -> 06:24 PM) 5 of the top 10 rbi leaders in the southern league are barons including league leader stefan gartrell http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...11&sid=t247 they also lead the league in runs and fewest runs given up good team They threw Huntsville a pity win. Danks said he doesn't feel like he needs surgery. Take that for what it's worth.

Of course, minor league team jerseys are not fitted to the player, the player finds one that fits him.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 11:27 PM) That's great to hear. I knew (or rather heard) that he was getting his fastball up to about 95, but wasn't expecting him to be getting much higher than that. Was the higher velocity fastball his 2 seamer with the life or a 4 seamer without much life that he added? Cause if he was touching 98 and getting up to around 95-96 with the running fastball he has.... damn! To be honest, it could be either one, I'm not sure. My view is from first base side.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 11:26 PM) He and Cook should be competing to take Negron's job up in AAA. Negron's only 26, get rid of the senior citizens.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 11:22 PM) His head seems right, but he's way fatter than that. He wasn't that fat when he played here, that's actually pretty accurate to what he looked like in 2005 in B'ham. I was convinced that he was actually 6'5".

Dayan's homer was opposite field, no doubter off the bat. Got a fist bump from John Ely, he was charting pitches in the stands, so I gave him props on his start last night. Hudson looked good, his fastball touched 98 at one point and was ranging from 92 to 96 consistently. It actually got faster as the game went on. His change was in the mid 80's. He threw something that was in the 70's too, don't know what it is though. One thing that I saw that concerned me, but may be no big deal...his arm motion, which is three quarters, seemed to put a lot of pressure on his elbow. Of course, it may be nothing.

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 09:11 PM) Fernando Hernandez mopping up. He has 11 saves but this is not a save situation. JP is he on track for a Charlotte promo?? He certainly deserves one. His fastball has found some new life and he has a nasty knee buckling curveball.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 10:36 PM) I'm saying Hudson. I've been a Huddy Homer for a while, and after a great debut vs. a very good Huntsville team, my homerism is off the charts right now. What Huntsville teams is that?

Bobby Jenks bobblehead For those who want to see what it looked like.

QUOTE (Adele_H @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 05:51 PM) good grief, does this point still need emphasizing anymore? overwhelming majority of minor-leaguers not only do not become ML stars, not even close. 2000 prospect list above is another reminder. overwhelming. majority i'll be happy if 2 of the current Sox top 20 prospects made an All-Star appearance in the bigs. That may be true, but it's no reason to harp on Shelby incessantly.
-
QUOTE (Adele_H @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) Scout the player not the numbers, as the old folk mutter. Numbers in the minors can be very misleading, in general. Ask Brandon Wood and Jake Fox, among others. Then you take into account that the jump between A and AA is arguably the biggest of all (besides to majors) The way some talk about Shelby is that of a bonafied blue-chip prospect. Having actually seen him play.... He is NOT. There are a couple of John Shelby III in every organization AA/AAA. My point re: speed/power being not nearly enough to be a good major-leaguer, still stands. Who knows, Shelby may become an All-Star; I am certainly not trying to suggest he's hopeless case. I didn't think Chris Young, Corey Patterson and Felix Pie would be failing as miserably at this point in their careers, either. How much have you actually seen of him? You do realize his approach has been changed this year.

QUOTE (sayitaintso @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 12:25 PM) I actually work for the Thunderbolts, but i actually never got to see this guy play. His stats said he only had 9 IP. He held opponents to a sub .200 batting average though.

QUOTE (OilCan @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) Is this the guy? http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/K/B...on-Kloess.shtml Yep.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) Typo LOL. Call me "Ginter," for we are many.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) I posted this in another thread, but it is still relevant here. I think the reason don't want to be overly optimistic is because they have been burned before on prospects. I have followed Sox minor leaguers since 2000 and I got really excited then we had the best farm system according to baseball america. Here is the Sox's top 15 prospects following the completion of the 2000 season: 1) Rauch 2) Borchard 3) Crede 4) Ginter 5) Ginter 6) Wright 7) Barcelo 8) West 9) Rowand 10) Fogg 11) Stumm 12) Majewski 13) Liefer 14) Biddle 15) Malone Two of these guys lived up to their billing as top prospects (Crede and Rowand) and a lot of them had tremendous minor league success (Rauch was BA's player of the year in 2000). These guys had arguably as good numbers as any of current Sox prospects. Most people thought that these guys would be the foundation to our team the next decade and only two of them were that. Sometimes it's better to err on the side of caution and be surprised if they make rather than be let down when they fail to live up to our expectatio Matt Ginter and ? Ginter???

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 02:09 PM) I think this site is very, very optimistic when it comes to prospects, even though the Sox have a TERRIBLE history of developing their own. I think some of the backlash toward Gartrell is from people who don't get the David Cook love. One thing people need to remember is not every prospect is supposed to be a superstar. Maybe Gartrell can come up and be a 4th outfielder. Same goes for Shelby, who's been destroying LHP this season. Getz is an example of a guy that was way too overhyped, as people were expecting a .400 OBP and 40 steals it seems like. He's a decent little player, but probably will never be near All-star caliber. That's fine though. Well, I like David Cook as you probably know. But with him, I just want him to get a chance because I think he could be good. I've watched him a lot, so that's why I like him and that's why I think he's good. With Getz, I think he's underachieving. He's a baseball rat and all business on the field. I think he's capable of being a .300 hitter, but if nobody's a threat behind him in the lineup, then he's not going to do much. He's also a better fit in the 2 hole. I never thought he could steal 40 bags. He's more of a contact hitter with decent speed.

Being overly skeptical about prospects is what leads to the attitude that they're all just trade chips for mediocre veterans.

QUOTE (OilCan @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) I can't hope but compare his stats with Magglio Ordonez when he was in the Sox org. Although Magglio was 2 years younger when he hit AA compared to Stefan when he hit AA, remember that Magglio was a UFA at an early age @ 18. But the numbers are pretty similar. Check out The Baseball Cube when you get a chance... I know his stats, I see him everyday.

QUOTE (OilCan @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 01:57 PM) Right on schedule to get to the big leagues. And no one is/has ever called him a viable replacement for Jermaine Dye. If he continues to mash, who knows? Check out his progress @ http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/S...-Gartrell.shtml With the exception of 2008, he has progressed a new level every year. I'm not saying that I've ever seen him in person. I've kept up with him based on stats alone, and the input on everyone from this and WSI. If you have seen him in person and can evaluate him on age alone, that's fine. But we would all be wise to listen and read someone's evaluation such as JPN...he has probably seen him in person. Stefan's a tremendous athlete and has a lot of upside.
-
Let's keep in mind that Stefan's only in his 3rd full year in the minors. And most of that time in AA, including a week at the end of his first pro season in 2006.
