QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Aug 24, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) Ummm...an 83-85% save percentage is not exactly lights out. It's kind of average to below average. Half of the 6 came in the last three weeks when they started bringing him in in the 8th. So, yeah, he has been lights out the majority of the year.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 24, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) Feed me a stray cat. "I'm having lunch with Cliff Huxtable at the Four Seasons." "What do you do?" "I'm into murders and executions." "Mergers and acquisitions?"

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 09:43 PM) Barons lost to Jacksonville 3-2 A rare blown save and loss for Jon Link Jon Link has 34 saves, which leads all of MiLB, and only 6 blown saves. Lights out All Star Barons Pitcher Of The Year. He's also going for the Southern League & Barons record for saves, the previous record is 36. He has 9 more games to get it. By the way, the Barons have turned the third most double plays in all of baseball in 2008.

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 11:39 PM) Do you even need to say Eldred hit a bomb or can it just be assumed? 35 HR & 100 RBI. Too bad he missed a month, it could easily be 43-44 HR & 125 RBI at the pace he is on.

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 09:43 PM) Winston-Salem won 10-4 Shelby, Sanchez, Gaines, and Hernandez with 3-hits each. Ely wasn't particularly sharp, but got his 6th win in his last 7 starts. Shelby had 2 double. Sanchez hit a 3-run homerun. Warthogs have won 10 out of their last 11 games... And extended their wildcard lead to 3.5 games with 8 games left in the season. Kinston is behind them and the two start a four game series in W-S on Monday. If W-S can at least split the series, it should just about lock the wildcard up. That would leave 4 games left with a 3.5 game lead. 3 out of 4 would clinch it. Go Hogs!

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2007 -> 10:29 PM) I will start if off by saying I saw American Psycho last night and all I can say is what a strange strange movie. "Don't just stare at it, eat it!" Best line in movie history. Every time I hear "Sssudio" by Phil Collins, I laugh.

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 03:39 PM) It'd be great to hear what some of the presidents of the past said like Andrew Jackson. He would've been a riot to hear. I'd say Andrew Jackson would sound a lot like Bill "The Butcher" Cutting from "Gangs Of New York."

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Would seem to make sense, but the fact that he's left-handed might work against him. I'd guess that the Sox would like AJ's backup to be right-handed to give them more situation flexibility. May not be a big issue, but... Cole will be in Chicago on September 1st. He'll be the third catcher through the end of the season.

Big BA with a walk off solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th to cap the last regular season home game. He absolutely clobbered it. It was a no doubter before he even made contact. Miguel Negron was announced as team MVP and Jon Link was pitcher of the year for B'ham. Speaking of Negron...a direct quote from him at his b'day party last night (Puerto Rican accent implied)... "It doesn't matter who the starting pitcher is, it doesn't matter what team, it doesn't matter what city, we're going to destroy them. We're going to win it all."

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 08:55 PM) Soooo... the one time you saw him he sucked, eh? I guess we should just ignore the fact he's had over a .900 OPS two years in a row then. (Sorry... not vicious sarcasm... just mild.) JPN knows a fair bit about him since he has season tickets to the Barons games. I'm sure he'll chime in on the subject soon. I've never ever, ever seen anyone hit the ball as hard as David. He hit the most perfect homeruns, absolute 450 foot laser shots. He's got scary power, major league power. Ryan Braun almost hit the ball as hard as Cook when he was with Huntsville in 2006. He is also fundamentally sound. Draws a ton of walks and has great plate discipline, very selective. He is the most locked in, focused hitter I'ver ever seen. When he swings, he fills the strike zone with his bat. He may not have done much in the NESN game, but I do remember he moved a runner over that was driven in by the next batter. He barely missed a homerun in that game too. More productive outs than not. That's why he was the Barons MVP in the first half. B'ham clinched the first half on a walk off sac fly from Cook in extra innings. It doesn't matter how old he is, he is a stud. If the White Sox don't hold onto him, they will regret it. Put him on the 40 man, start him in Charlotte next year, let him rake for a month or two, then call him up.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 06:56 PM) What exactly does the GM for a minor league team do? Everything but player personnel stuff.
-
How cool is it to be named "Sergio?"
-
Per the GM of the Barons, the deadline to demote players from Charlotte was 8/15. So, we can't get David Cook back for the playoffs. Maybe a September call-up for the White Sox though.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 07:29 AM) Valido in his first two games at AAA: 0-7, 4 K The Butcher of B'ham and his defensive (and offensive) reign of terror will no longer harm the Barons. Certainly not a merit promotion. They got rid of him so he wouldn't hurt the team in the playoffs.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 03:03 AM) The White Sox organization went 7-0 today. Homers for Cook and Brandon Allen. Great starts by soco and upchurch. beckham going 2-4 and hurting his average. Big BA hit that ball a long way. They said 434, but it looked like 470. He's a left handed batter and he hit it off a left handed pitcher.

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 11:56 PM) Lee Cruz 2-3 with a homerun and 3 RBIs tonight in Birmingham's 8-3 win. Cruz's career was heading straight down the toilet this summer after failing at Winston-Salem (.196 BA in 194 at-bats) and even worse at Kanny (1 hit in 20 at-bats). In a bizarre twist of luck for Cruz (probably the organization giving the 25 year old outfielder a last chance), the Sox promoted him to AA. In Birmingham, after struggling early he has caught fire. He's hitting around .370 in his last 10 games and now his season average (155 at-bats) is up to .283 with an OPS over .820. Good for Cruz... and for the Barons. He's now batting cleanup and playing a key role in the team's offense. Lee hits the ball hard too.

Looks like Crede is out of the lineup again for Charlotte. His back must be seriously F'ed. Danks should be in the lineup tonight for Kanny. The Butcher of B'ham should continue his defensive reign of terror at SS for Charlotte. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) So, Valido was promoted to Charlotte, and I noticed that Miranda wasn't in the W-S lineup. Given the crowded middle infield at W-S, anyone thing maybe Miranda is headed for B-Ham? Nope. B'ham activated Robbie Hudson to take Valido's spot. Huddy is so money and he knows it. Depending on whether or not W-S makes the playoffs, I think B'ham will get some reinforcements for the playoffs. Hopefully David Cook will return and maybe Joe Persichina or Greg Paiml will come up from W-S.

By the way, Aaron Poreda is rocking the porn 'stache. And, Victor Mercedes with a cycle and a walk off homer in the 11th.

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 07:24 PM) ...but Valido is starting at SS... At first, utter shock. Valido...promoted...words that would cause heart attacks and fainting spells. Blows your mind. That was the big news at the season ticket holder picnic tonight before the game. But, the positive side...nobody was sad about it. He wasn't going to start at SS for the Barons in the playoffs. Robbie Hudson, who everybody loves, was activated off the DL to take his place. The move was probably out of need at Charlotte, but more so to get rid of him before the playoffs. Addition by subtraction. 27 errors...that would have cost the Barons a playoff game. Sorry Knights fans. More sorry to Nick Blasi, he was released by Charlotte to make room for Valido. I'll keep and eye out for pigs flying though.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 09:39 PM) 3 of my buddies are from Winston-Salem and they're not happy about the name change. Though, they do always refer to Winston-Salem as "the dash" so they thought that would be alright. I don't see why they would change it anyway. They've only had that nickname for 10 or so years, and it is unique and alliterative.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 05:27 PM) The Kannapolis Slayers are at Hickory, in warm-ups, with Lowe starting for Kanny (Beckham not in the line up for some reason) He didn't play, they lost. That's a bad trend. The three games he played, they scored double digit runs, he doesn't play, 2 runs.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) Interesting, I didnt know that. I still have a Winston Salem Warthogs hat from my trip down there in 2003... they have a pretty awesome logo... any idea what they will be next year? These are the finalists for the new nickname... Aviators: It plays off the strong aviation history of North Carolina and the founding of Piedmont Airlines in Winston-Salem. (Blah) Dash/The Dash: A nickname used for the city of Winston-Salem. (Kinda cool) Racers: Ties to the strong auto racing heritage of North Carolina and Winston-Salem. (Blah) Rhinos: A strong, swift, ferocious animal with ties to the area. (Why change it from Warthogs to that?) Wallbangers: A fun, unique baseball term. (Bingo!) Wallbangers would be awesome! I hope they choose that one.
