QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 08:49 PM) Who is this Bergesen f***? One of the O's pitching prospects, they have a lot. He just got called up and this is his MLB debut.
-
Ridiculously long at-bat from Q ends in a strikeout, but it took 12 pitches.
-
This Bergessen guy looks like he means business.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) well the boston game got post-poned, so anything could happen at this point Boston's nowhere near Baltimore

QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 08:07 PM) I have a question... how can the people who advised the torture be prosecuted? What laws did they break? That's why Obama left it up to the DoJ.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) Appears to be a line of storms moving through, might go somewhat quick based on what it's currently doing. It was cloudy early this morning, most of the afternoon it's been bright and sunny. It only got gray again in the last hour, and lightning and wind started in the last few minutes. I'm gonna guess about an hour.

A student of proctology is in the morgue one day after classes, getting a little practice in before the final exams. He goes over to a table where a body is lying face down. He uncovers the sheet over the body, and to his surprise he finds a cork in the corpse's rectum. Figuring that this is fairly unusual, he pulls the cork out, and to his surprise, the rectum starts singing, "Hey Chicago what do you say... the Cubs are gonna..." The student is amazed, and places the cork back in the backside. The music stops. Totally freaked out, the student calls the Medical Examiner over to the corpse. "Look at this, this is really something," the student tells the examiner as he pulls the cork back out again. "Hey Chicago what do you say... the Cubs are gonna..." "So what?" the Medical Examiner replies, obviously unimpressed with the students discovery. "But isn't that the most amazing thing you've ever seen?" asked the student. "Are you kidding?" replied the Examiner, "I've heard hundreds of assholes sing that stupid song."

It's mostly kap, but there are a lot of people going off and arguing in the Republican thread, too. As long as it's not over the top I let it slide, but it goes both ways. I'm not going to tell any non-Dem poster to not post here if non-Republican types want to post in the Republican thread. Generally speaking, cross-posting has worked, but there needs to be a level of mutual respect or it all comes down.

Man, a little overdue. Showed occasional signs that he might put it together every now and then, but never did.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) Rain delays may be a possibility the next two games. Which would suck. It rained yard yesterday and I think the day before, it wasn't raining this morning, it'll probably be on and off for about the next 24 hours.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) I don't think he's struggling with the weather or rain. I do think he's going through the typical transition issues that every Latin player goes through (see the upcoming movie "Sugar") when they come to play baseball in the US, and especially a place that's really different from what they're used to (say the Pioneer League or the strange accents/dialects of people from the South). I don't know firsthand what Viciedo's English level is, and if he has someone assigned to spend time with him (the Seattle SuperSonics actually had an intern whose job it was to make sure Sean Kemp got out of bed and got to practice on time)...I can only say that when I worked for the Pirates' minor league team, most of those guys struggled to order from the McDonald's menu. They needed help with finding a car (leasing, buying, renting, etc.) and reading a contract for an apartment. There are just so many details. Having now had the opportunity to live outside the US in four countries (China, Thailand, Philippines and Colombia), I have a much greater appreciation for these issues and the big impact they can have on players....finding a church, dealing with girls and groupies and having freedom away from their parents, ordering food, doing their laundry, trying to learn English, basic communication, it can be very frustrating and alienating. Now I'm not saying these all are excuses whey Viciedo has an OPS less than Brent Lillibridge. It is just 41 at-bats. He has at least come up with some timely RBI's. We know he can drive the ball...he did so in spring training. Over 140 games, the true/r nature of a player comes out. Perhaps he's just putting pressure on himself because of the signing bonus and contract, because of what Alexei did last year, because of all the posts by Cubano, there are many factors. I agree that adjustment to a new culture is probably the biggest thing for him, but weather is not one of them. He's in the South, they get a good 4-6 week headstart on good weather.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 12:27 PM) Convince the step duaghter that the opportunity to see Q is much more important than a basketball game. A nice evening out with the step daughter and Q could be memorable. She has seen him before, The Carlos Quentin even was kind enough to hit a homer.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) I would have divorced my old ball and chain a long time ago becasue she has turned my grand daughter into a Red Sox fan, but... I am afraid of her and she makes pretty good money In my case, my wife happens to be hot.
-
Why are we talking about Viciedo struggling in the cold by the way? 5 day forecast for Birmingham: 68, 75, 82, 86, 84. Hopefully Viciedo doesn't get hypothermia down there.
-
So I was going to go to this game but because my wife has other arrangements she made recently, I have to stick around so I can pick up my stepdaughter from her basketball game. The real question is, should I divorce my wife for hindering my ability to attend a Sox game?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg and International Law
lostfan replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 11:44 AM) I completely disagree with the position that SCOTUS should be using international law, in any way. Our entire system is designed around our own judicial precedent, not that of other countries. I think you're way off the mark here as far as what Ginsburg actually said. -
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 10:23 AM) You're right, but it's not even the Europeans here. It was pretty much just Spain and Portugal. Yeah I was just kind of referring to "European colonists" generically.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) Here's the problem with that road. What place hasnt been? The United States and Canada were once colonies. Southeast Asian countries were once colonies. India was, Australia was, many countries in Europe once belonged to other countries. It's always kind of been the world works (or at least used to). The problem with South America is that once they drove out the Spanish, they were faced with economic problems, no central government and lack of strong leaders. Leaders such as Bolivar emerged but after they were gone the governments just didnt seem to prosper. They have plenty of resources down there, but they just havent been able to stabilize the regions. I think part of it has to do with the fact that the countries were created somewhat arbitrarily and the region's terrain makes it difficult to have a sound infrastructure. You're right, but the US, Canada, SE Asia, hell even India were not administered anywhere near as half-assed as South America was... and Africa, well that's another story entirely, Europeans basically irreversibly shafted that continent to hell. IMO the British were much better at colonialism because they tended to focus on building up the local economy and showing them to govern rather than just raw exploitation (with the exception of the Middle East, the British f***ed that one up). So when they ended British rule, they at least had a clue about government and how to function. Not so much the case with South America, as you've said.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 01:07 AM) I'm as harsh a critic of Brian as can be, and yet if he wants to keep taking walks and slapping singles... while bringing that CF defense, great. I dont need more extra base power on the team. Lillibridge I just want as utility for right now. What I do fear though is that BA's getting an abnormal amount of first pitch balls for some reason, and when the league adjusts his OBP will revert. Very much hope that fear does not come to be. Well his obp isn't going to stay .429, that would be nothing short of miraculous.

Happy Birthday Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens!
lostfan replied to DukeNukeEm's topic in SLaM
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 10:40 PM) There is a definite correlation between Joakim Noah being awful tonight and John Paul Steven's birthday. -
f*** the ending of this game so much.

Gordon's just been lights out the 2nd half.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 09:38 PM) Yes I did. I don't want you torturing me... lol. lol, nah the closest I ever came to torturing a guy (not really torture, it's permitted) was when he started getting smart w/me so I made him stand in a squatting position for a few mins while I rephrased my question. I actually wanted to slap him but I couldn't.
-
lol, did you just say "sire"

Check out the history of South America and I'd say the only place that's been f***ed harder by sloppy colonialism is Africa.
