I wonder how much longer this will be allowed to play out once this latest appeal is done? I've seen some rumblings that this will be appealed and end up before the SCOTUS but they have no jurisdiction whatsoever over a clearly defined state issue, plus I tend to think that Reid would trump such an attempt anyway. In fact I sort of wonder what's been taking him so long.

QUOTE (SoIL @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) I haven't enjoyed ESPN as a whole for a couple of years now. MLBTV has pretty well eliminated ESPN from my TV watching. The only time I ever watch ESPN is when there is a game on it. Otherwise I ignore their "analysis." I can't remember what the straw that broke the camel's back was, I think it was some more manufactured Favre or T.O. drama.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 11:40 AM) Politics aside, Im really curious how this is going to play out. These pirates already have 200+ hostages at this moment, if they start killing these people, countries around the world are going to get pissed at the US and French and blame them for instigating a reaction. To me, this was just waiting to happen as soon as they became bold enough to take a US ship Maybe, but what do the pirates really have to gain if they kill the hostages? That's their bargaining chip, and if all they want is money, that possibility goes away if they don't have the hostage anymore. Plus if they start acting all uppity, it's more than just the U.S. that will smack them back down.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 11:24 AM) And for the liberals poking fun/ridiculing/chastising the current "GOP strategy," the Dems did the EXACT same thing in the 2004 cycle. It was lots of pointing fingers, saying this move is the dumbest move in the history of the world, rallying the extreme base, and generally just being nasty. I think that's what every party does when they are out of power. Yeah, you're right about this. At the time I was a registered Democrat. After Kerry's horses*** campaign and seeing there were no real leaders in the Democratic party, I got disgusted with them and registed independent and didn't pay attention to politics for a while. I started leaning libertarian and thought about registering Republican until I started paying attention and realizing that it was about conflicting ideologies and that they took their principles for granted (they still do although they claim to "get it" now, as a result the party is a disaster right now). As of now, I'm only concerned with basic competence. People tend to not believe me, but I honestly would vote for a Republican for president if they weren't a stereotype whose beliefs and actions were disconnected from reality, e.g. we want to start a second simultaneous war so we're going to cut taxes because that doesn't at all sound completely ridiculous, oh, and this war will be easy. After the election I was thinking I wanted to see some leadership come out of the GOP and it's best for the country to have a strong conservative presence to counter liberals, and I still think that. But it's clear to me that it's not going to happen anytime soon, and they've literally tied their fortunes to the possible failure of Obama for 2010. So conservative leadership won't be coming out of the GOP, at least for the time being, what with their joke budgets and silly half-serious proposals. Therefore I'm really just hoping the party just dies, and a new brand of conservative party comes out of it; the latter isn't that farfetched and wouldn't take that long if the former happened.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 11:14 AM) I think it's safe to say at least 1/3rd of White Sox fans weren't sure of Chris Getz...probably even more than that coming into ST. Many thought (and a few still still think) he was more suited to be a utility infielder or Aaron Miles type of player, but not an everyday infielder. And, if you took a poll today, there's many fans who would have preferred Orlando Hudson/Figgins/Roberts or even starting Beckham right away at the major league level. I think that comment goes to that uncertainty among people outside Soxtalk who don't really even know much about him at all. Psh, I'm as confident in Chris Getz as any of his other fans on here, but if it were possible I'd have taken one of those guys in a heartbeat.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) does anyone know if Chris got injured or anything? I thought it was strange for the team to pinch run Lillibridge for Getz yesterday, and now today Lillibridge is starting.... He has a bruised elbow.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:52 AM) I would imagine if people weren't so easily offended by anything negative to do with Obama, the arguements wouldn't keep happening. What about the people who are easily offended by the people who are easily offended? Which will certainly offend the original group of easily offended. lol. It's always the other side's fault and everybody wants to be the victim, nobody ever admits to being complicit or contributing to anything negative. But that's politics, so I guess I'm naive to think that this will ever change and people will start thinking and functioning like me.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) These pirates have U.S. citizen rights, you know... Well, they're dead now. It's refreshing to have the administration not try to unnecessarily glamorize it by painting it as a "terrorist" incident, though.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) I disagree totally. There hasn't been NEARLY as much volume joking done about Obama, as was done about Bush. It hasn't even been close. There also hasn't been nearly the critisism of Obama here that was seen under Bush by a significant margin. I think the biggest difference is the volume of those who can't handle it is louder under Obama than it was under Bush. Ratio of liberals to conservatives here is like 3 to 1. edit: also, holy s***, not this argument again. Can we have one week go by without doing this?

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:43 AM) Congrats to the Prez for acting. But why only after being asked twice by the DOD? And then only if the life of the Captain was at risk? Wasn't the Captain's life at risk the minute he was forced onto the enclosed raft? The important thing is the Prez acted and we were sucessful in rescuing this Captain. Maybe, just maybe we put some doubt into the heads of these knuckleheads........but,.....I doubt it... What do you mean? I heard the DoD asked twice and he approved both times. I'll wait to see what Secretary Gates has to say (one of the few people in government I feel is almost always honest).

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:40 AM) Really? I see post after post after post after post after post by these same people who think foreign folks should have the same exact rights as our citizens. When the equation comes out in a different circumstance, well, then, we step over the line? You're asking me?

Drive to the game? When I go (which isn't that often, being out of town) I park at 87th street and take the Red Line. No way would I drive if I didn't have to.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 09:17 AM) Why is everyone so darned sensative about this? Its freakin high comedy when Colbert or Stewart does it, but let someone make a joke in the filibuster about the other side and everyone flips out. Its the height of hypocrisy. Pull your panties out of your ass cracks people and deal with it. Everyone thought it was hilarious 3 months ago, now that has changed? You are right, it sounds exactly like a bunch of 12 year olds. Except it is about 12 year olds who are too damned insecure to laugh at themselves for fear of what everyone else will think. Meh, as I said before, I really don't care (I wasn't going to say anything until I gave my perception of what Balta said), but the hypocrisy is really a two-way street. But everyone acts like it's only hypocritical when the "other side" does it and then gets all pissy, then says "but you guys do/did it" which makes me roll my eyes. That's what my stepdaughter does.

I missed the actual World Series because I was in Kentucky for some mandatory Army school I didn't want to be at. Thank god for score updates on the phone and later DVD, though.

Really good read from Nate Silver on the Republican-manufactured perception of "bipartisanship" vs. actual bipartisanship when the other party is simply being ridiculous and acting in bad faith, without ever really having any intention of acting in good faith. http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/04/wha...e.html#comments

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 01:23 AM) He's not a finished product by any stretch. But he might be (and this is ridiculous considering how young he is) the best defensive CF in all of baseball. His offense should without question catch up with his d. Yeah, you can see this better at the games, too. He gets reads on the ball and he has fantastic range thanks to his feet. Many times you see him camped right under a ball because he got there so fast, which as far as I'm concerned is the mark of an elite defensive CF. Then you have Markakis over on his left, so there really isn't much of a gap out there in right-center.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 12, 2009 -> 11:45 PM) you guys are getting too sensitive derision is a proud filibuster tradition Balta, not me. I myself don't care.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 12, 2009 -> 11:30 PM) Eh? I can see why some people might think there would be fringe liberals who would be very upset at the thought of just shooting and killing 3 pirates like that. I am not among those people, but I can see why they exist. I think he's saying he's tired of seeing people bash Obama and/or mock the liberal base just for the sake of doing it.

QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 12, 2009 -> 10:40 PM) I believe it's called "Menage a tois"? If only I wasn't married. At first I thought the girlfriend was flirting with me a little (we spent a lot of time talking) but evidently not. I just never noticed my friend batted lefty and now certain things she's done/said in the past perfect sense to me (she is active duty).
