QUOTE (Fedor @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 09:19 AM) Relax. Quentin's swing is still explosive. He missed a lot of time, and even when he played, he played on a bad leg (if not with a still unhealed wrist). When healthy, Quentin is the best hitter on the team. And that includes Beckham. 2008 wasn't a mirage. Let's hope Q. is not dragged down by injuries. *says prayer* well put. I'm not worried about him at all. it takes a while to get the timing back on your swing and get comfortable in the batters box after a long layoff. if he still struggles a few weeks down the road then maybe we have to worry a bit.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:42 PM) Every once in a while Phegley will have the kind of night that shows you exactly what he's capable of. Tonight was one of those nights. 2-5 with a 3-run homer. The knock on him out of college was that he wasn't going to hit for power with a wood bat. He was always capable of squaring up the ball and hitting line drives all over the field. I think that with 5 HR's in such a short period of time at least puts some of those power fears to rest. As for his low avg I, without any firsthand knowledge, am going to speculate that he has just been over anxious at the plate and having some bad luck. Again, nobody ever questioned his ability to square the ball up and make good contact, just his ability to carry over his power numbers with a wood bat.

http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/news/story?id=4381077 It is possible that he could pitch his first game for us in the Sept 3rd makeup game against the Cubs. Wouldn't that be a wonderful slap in the face to all those north-siders?

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 08:27 PM) Thompson, 1-3 with an RBI and a BB I'll take it And an outfield assist, throwing a runner out at 2nd If he keeps up this pace, he'll have a 333 avg, no strikeouts, about 30BB's and 30 OF assists by the end of the year!

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 05:01 PM) Trayce Thompson in the lineup for Bristol, playing CF, batting 6th. Never mind, Bristol game now PPD also. dammit! I really wanted to see him start playing.

QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 4, 2009 -> 11:01 PM) Hudson @ AA(Birmingham in the SOU): ERA 1.79 50.1 IP 56K K/9 10.01 BB/9 1.61 K/BB 6.22 HR/9 0.18 AVG .193 WHIP .85 BABIP .277 FIP 1.95 would love to hear what people on the board think about this comp. Those numbers have changed. ERA 1.60, 56.1 IP, 63K, 10BB = BB/9 1.59, K/9 10.06 , K/BB 6.3, BAA .188, WHIP 0.83 Some impressive numbers from a guy spending his first full season in pro ball and has jumped levels twice so far.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 4, 2009 -> 06:11 PM) No way in hell Richard becomes a #2, at absolute max he's an average #3 but it's far more likely that he ends up a passable #4/5. Don't be blinded by the good stretch he's on because his stuff is very mediocre. I definitely agree with your last statement though. I think that he's shown that he can be a pretty dominant pitcher. He's got big time stuff, a FB that gets up to 96, a good slider and an improving changeup. I also think he's been working on the cut FB (no surprise there). If he puts it all together he can be a really good player, I am not saying though that I think he'll become a #2 type starter. I just think that is his ceiling. More likely he's a solid 3 who puts up good numbers because he pitches in Petco.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 12:35 AM) I wish him the best. Me too, but I think he was over-hyped by this board. He was pitching low-A ball and he's 1. old for the league and 2. has a ton of experience in a major college program. Frankly he should have been mowing those guys down. Doesn't take much more than a dominant fastball and one passable off speed pitch to rack up huge K #'s in that league. Looking at his WHIP, and BAA, not to mention his HR rate, I just wasn't so hot on him as a big time prospect. I think that he'll be lucky to make it to the big leagues and be anything more than a 4/5 type guy. That is IF he makes it to the show. It is entirely possible that he'll really start to get knocked around once he advances. Not sure he's got the mental aspects of pitching up to par. I am glad though that we were able to take a 13th round pick and use him as a bargaining chip to swing a major deal.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 4, 2009 -> 05:01 PM) Poreda is just a reliever. Probably an above average one, but nothing worth regretting in a deal for Jake Peavy. This is why i was ok with the deal, I don't think that we gave up much to get a true #1 pitcher. Carter is dominating at a low level but he's also too old and experienced to be pitching at that level, Richard is inconsistent but could be a good #3 or even a #2 if he reaches his max potential, we all know what Russell brings to the table, a big fastball and thats it. Poreda just doesn't have anything other than a great fastball. I didn't want to jinx him when he was in our organization or be overly critical of him but I've always seen him as a reliever. He really just doesn't have anything other than one dominant pitch with flashes of a decent slider. Even if he could add a changeup he still just doesn't have enough offspeed stuff to be a starter. If however we had included Hudson in the deal I would not have been very happy. He has 4 pitches right now and has the potential to be a top of the rotation type guy. He has a huge ceiling while none of the others really do. San Diego got quantity, not quality in their return haul for Peavy.

He's got a bright future no doubt. BUT, cmon, lets wait for him to have another 5-8 REALLY good seasons before we start talking about the hall. Frank Thomas was one of the best righties in the past 20 years and he's not even a shoe in.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) If Becks had made the team out of ST...he'd hit FA one full year earlier. ding ding ding!

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 08:34 AM) Minus JorDanks, I agree. The guy and his brother ditched Boras for us and I think that deserves respect. He also will solve a much needed spot in the future. Yes, we have no other CF spects who will be ready to contribue anytime soon. We need him around, mitchell is 2 years away minimum and may not even be a CF.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 05:25 PM) that BHam link is to the charlotte game muwahahaha!

Charlotte B-Ham W-S Kanny Bristol Holmberg with 4 scoreless innings so far, game in a weather delay GF game starts at 9 ET

The "final solution" to our misguided drafts of the early to mid 2000's? Is that what you're getting at here?
-
Can't believe how cheap he was, that's a big surprise. Hopefully he gets down to Bristol in the next day or two and gets his career going.
-
Depends, if we lose the next couple games and the tigres win, we might trade away a bullpen arm or a backup OF like BA/Wise, maybe one of our extra SP's like Colon, if the oppo happens then we might add a small piece like a 4th OF who can hit better than Dweezy. Either way I'd be surprised to see a big move take place. IMO, we should trade off one of our extra SP's, between Colon, Richard, Torres we have one too many 5th starters/ Long relievers, i'd like to see Colon moved and go with the kids, let them develop.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:30 PM) I'm not saying that Flowers won't be good, but I think we'll miss AJ when he's gone. Unless TF kills it we're definitely going to miss him. He calls a hell of a game, plays good D (bad at throwing out runners but good at the other aspects) hits near 300 with 15hr a season. Not too damn many catchers in the league that can do that. His game calling is very underrated too. Anyone remember how much better our pitchers got when he arrived? He's one of the best catchers in the game and though he is a bit of a character his passion, hustle, and smarts get under the skin of the opposition much more than it does his teammates. The guy is a gamer and I love him.

Video of it on MLB.com, didn't look like a big deal, just some tempers boiling over on a team that is playing bad at a pretty bad time.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) It ain't looking good, that's for sure. Minus Mitchell, this draft looks very very weak. Hopefully Thompson is a player. However, two players can make a draft, but it would nice to add to our depth and give us some trading chips. WAAAAAYYYY too early to make statements about our draft like that. we won't know anything for at least a couple years, who knows how Heidenreich, Thompson, Holmberg, Jones(maybe) will develop not to mention several other project players or HSers we drafted. We'll see how these guys are playing in 2011 and then make some assessments.

Any idea why Flowers hasn't been playing?
bighurt4life replied to son of a rude's topic in FutureSox Board
They could have him working on just sitting next to the coaches during the games to learn about what is happening on the field, i.e. pitch selection, situational plays, defensive lineups etc... to give him a better idea how to manage a game behind the plate. -
Cole Armstrong with a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth. His eighth on the season, his bat is coming around after a very poor start.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) At this point I think the Sox are going to let Shoemaker play out his hit streak. He's at 28. Wonder what the record hit streak is to start a pro career. He's got to be close if he doesn't already have it, he'll be a trivia answer at the least if he does nothing else with his life/career.
