First Spring Training Game thread

Trayce stole 2B, but the throw bounced off Moncada. Moncada played it off like he had the ball though and held the glove on Thompson, while ignoring that the ball was trickling away. It was a savvy little move. -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 02:07 PM) Whitesox.com All I see is the mlb.tv link, not the typical webcast that Russ Langer hosts. Lucky for me my buddy let me use his MLB.tv account so I am able to watch Abreu strike out just now, but still misleading to not have a Sox webcast of it. -

I've always like CarGo. I think he would be fun on like a 2 yr/$16M deal or something. -
QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Feb 22, 2018 -> 08:19 PM) This is why I really want us to go HS early and often this coming draft. 83% of the White Sox top 5 round picks in the last 5 years have been college players. Oh s***, I went 2 for 2 in that poll. What can I say, I watch far too much of the draft every year.

2018 Winter Olympics Thread

The US game winning shootout goal and the other goal scored by the Canadian chick were unbelievable. It's quite obvious watching women's hockey that they have trouble with puck control and stick handling, but those goals were disgusting. So exciting. -

Kopech is starting on Monday, the game is webcast at 2pm......and I'm off work. :wub: -
I think part of it is that he hangs around with Robert and Eloy, and get pics taken together, so now it's easy to kind of associate the 3 of them together, which elevates Adolfo's stock in the fan's eyes.

Farquhar working with Giolito (analytically and stuff)

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2018 -> 09:27 AM) Talking in terms of physics, making a pitch rise is impossible. Right....that's why I said "you presumably want it to appear to rise" -
I'll be real, real upset if we sign Moose and forfeit our 2nd RD pick to do so. That would be the 45th overall pick. We took Alec Hansen with the 49th overall pick in 2016. Would you be willing to give up Hansen in order to sign Moose? I sure as hell wouldn't.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 11:29 PM) It's pitchfx but I don't think it's available to the public. I'm guessing it's the amount of drop in inches (or in this case the amount it doesn't drop) between the exact 3d position the pitcher releases the ball and where it ends up over the "heart" of the plate -- also mapped 3d. Anybody know for sure? This is the part that confused me, because if you want to get a high fastball by somehow, you presumably want it to appear to rise, not drop. So the idea of 13 being amazing and 8 being bad didn't make sense to me. I wonder if maybe that number is measured from the exact 3D center of the strikezone? So 8 inches from the heart of the zone versus 13 inches? But then it's more of location of the pitch, not movement of it. I need some sort of graphical representation to learn this apparently. -

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 07:59 PM) If the Yankees don't want Andujar, I wouldn't mind him coming to the Sox. This move makes some sense for the DBacks and Rays, but why did the Yankees do this? So Drury can play 2B. Their current 2B is Ronald Torreyes. -

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 10:13 PM) I can't post any more of the article but the argument (if you will) of the article was that there's more to successful pitching than just velocity and horizontal movement and it's something of course we always "guessed" (intuitively) but couldn't quite finger. Farquhar talks about how when he was in Seattle (before he looked into the analytics of it), then manager Lloyd McClendon pointed out how he was having success up in the zone even at 90-92 because his ball "stayed up" -- independent of the new data on spin, velocity etc via pitchfx (good looking out Lloyd!) . His fastball doesn't rise but in appears to because most pitchers' (regardless of velocity) falls more relatively. Gio's is apparently similar. So the question you asked, to finally get to it is -- it depends. Usually it's probably still better to throw harder. But if a guy can't, he can use this new data to target hitters in new ways. It could be something Gio uses in the future. How is "carry" measured? He said things like "8 carry gets crushed", but does that mean 8 inches? And 8 inches from what point? And does any public website track this? -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 07:07 PM) Don’t we want to keep the ball down at USCF? Second, how effective is a four seam FB at 89-93 mph, especially up in the zone? Ask Jose Quintana. -
QUOTE (GermanSock @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 04:27 PM) Btw according to fangrqphs last years draft (after they played short season): 1. McKay 60fv (22) 2. hiura 55fv (24) 3. Wright 55 (26) 4. Gore 55 (33) 5. Lewis 55 (38) 6. Greene 55 (42) 7. Addel 50 (66) 8. Lutz 50 (68) So I think at 5 the sox should probably be able to get a 55 or so, definitely a top100 prospect right away or after a good short season. Or even at pick #4.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 12:46 AM) Would they really have Abreu facing Kopech without the screen up in front? Why even take that risk? I don't think Abreu was allowed to swing at those. I think it was more or less giving Kopech a reference point by having a batter. No idea why that batter needed to be Abreu though. -
Nate Jones expects to be ready for Opener

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Feb 19, 2018 -> 09:34 AM) Don't the Sox have enough on the farm? Obviously have to maintain it (Draft, shopping fliers like Soaria, Bruce Rondon, etc.) but the fire sale is over Trading Jones wouldn't be a fire sale move. Really good relievers are wasted on rebuilding teams, as their half-life is really short. I doubt Jones is here in 12 months, unless 2018 is injury plagued again.
