  1. Umm.....ok. That's the biggest response I can muster about picking up an "at best" 4th OF. I guess if he can turn back to his 2011 self, he'd be worth something, but.....meh.
  2. Dbacks in active discussions to move Justin Upton. Dbacks are looking to fill 3B, LHRP, and SP holes with Upton trade. So the obvious trade is Upton for Morel, Thornton, and Floyd. LOL.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 03:25 PM) I have read through a couple dozen versions of this story, and I can't find one that talks about his pay next year at all. Only thing I've seen is a tweet by Joel Sherman that says Bay can sign a contract for any amount next season, he is not constrained to the league minimum like a typical released player would be subjected to.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 02:22 PM) I have seen that he gets 100% of his contract. I haven't seen that he gets to keep anything else, but like I said, I haven't seen the language of the deal yet either. That would definitely be a shock if it were true. I tweeted to a few baseball experts to see if they can enlighten me. I'm sure if what I think is true, it would be mentioned by some some publication at some point.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 02:06 PM) Usually buyouts work that if you go to another team, whatever they pay you is either sent to your former team, or is subtracted from what you are still owed by your former team. I don't know the language of this deal, but this is the typical structure for buyouts of guaranteed contracts. From reading Twitter at least, it sounds like Bay will get 100% of what the Mets owe him, PLUS he can sign a contract of ANY value (not the typical league minimum that happens when player is released) and get paid that on top of what the Mets will give him.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 02:02 PM) Probably not. Most teams structure buyouts to subtract any future contracts that overlap the relevant time period. I doubt the Mets were dumb enough to not think of that. Huh? I don't understand how Bay won't make more money once he enters in to a new contract.
  7. What an amazing day for Jason Bay. He gets paid 100% of what he had left on his contract, and now he can sign a new contract elsewhere and get paid by both teams. He is actually going to end up with more money for being so bad.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 01:18 PM) And you now have $5 million less to fill those 3 holes. Yep. If you wanted to get Wright, you'd have to think more along the lines of Floyd + Morel + top prospects. But either way, Wright is on his final year of his contract, so I don't really want to go down that route anyway.
  9. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 01:08 PM) How about Viciedo, Floyd and Flowers to the Mets for Wright? Then we have a hole in LF, SP, and C. No thanks.
  10. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 12:53 PM) Mets are intersted in trading for Tyler Flowers To clarify they have "some interest", according to a source. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/thrift...7WynJGGjbiNqqWO
  11. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 10:44 AM) Basebal lAmerica will come out with the White Sox Top 10 Prospects on Nov. 12 Excellent. It's always nice to know what the benchmark site thinks of each of our players.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 11:06 AM) Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan MLB spokesman: No change to the league's drug plan based on weed legalization in Colorado, Washington. Positive pot test still = 50 games. I guess Lincecum will retract his trade request to the Rockies.
  13. 7 questions, should take 2-3 minutes to complete. I am doing a research paper on online forums roles in society, like if they are important tools or not, and how people use them. I created this version of the survey with the assumption that everyone who responds is an active member of this forum (or others). http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2NX7QQ7 Thank you.
  14. Ball State won tonight! Upset #25 Toledo who was 8-1, and undefeated in the conference. Now that Ball State is 7-3, they have a real shot at a bowl game. Ohio is going to be a real tough matchup, but I can see Ball State getting at least 8 wins if they take care of Miami (OH) in their last game. I can't even believe that a 10-3 season is "technically" possible. Pete Lembo has turned this 2-10 team from 2 years ago around pretty quickly.
  15. Now that this godforsaken election is over, I fully expect all the loudmouths who claimed they would move out of the country if their guy wasn't elected to pack their bags and leave. Or, you know, they can nut up and shut up and just deal with this "abomination" (Obama Nation), as they'd probably call it. Barack Obama is our president again, and you are an American. Support him or get out.
  16. Let's see if Hahn scoops up the big 6'10 Andrew Brackman from the Reds. Former 1st RDer hasn't seen success since 2010, but if Coop can hone his control issues, he should be worth a look. Do a Phil Humber number on him.
  17. QUOTE (farmteam @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 12:37 AM) Yeah it has. Another great one last night, though the two before it had been a bit slow. Van Alden going ape s*** in the iron office was fantastic. Yeah, that was cool as s***. He looked like the incredible hulk the way he was standing and towering over people as he flipped the room apart. I think it's funny that they have turned him in to the very people he despised.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 10:40 PM) I may finally break down and grab it. Just listen to a few songs from Youtube. It's my favorite CD since Camp last year. Just to pick 3 music videos randomly from the CD to give you a taste..... Thift shop (Fun song about the awesome s*** you can get a thrift shop) - Same Love (Song about gay rights in this country) - My Oh My (Baseball song about the Mariners pennant run in the 90's)
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 10:26 PM) I just feel like we sort of blew our load last year and came up short. Almost everything we needed to happen did happen...and it still wasn't enough...I just don't know that everything is going to fall into place like it did for us last season... Huh? No one including us here on this site expected us to compete with Detroit. The fact that we did was all a bonus. I don't see how we are any worse off in 2013 than we were going in to 2012, in fact, I'd say we are better off because now Sale has the experience of a full year, Quintana emerged, our bullpen full of rookies got a year of experience in. I feel better going in to 2013 than I did last year, and that's what was expected.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 09:32 PM) Trying to apply a statistical number to "worth" for an irrational free agent market is the only crazy thing here. Well the clearly you don't apply to the statement I started with earlier "If you are in to WAR, and market value per win".
  21. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 08:56 PM) You and everyone else And what's that other guy talking about Boardwalk having been boring? It's been amazing. I don't disagree with it being boring. The show has turned very very dialogue and emotion heavy, then they do one crazy thing at the end of the episode. It's definitely behind Homeland and Dexter this season for me in terms of interest level. Also, where the hell has Chalky White been? The last time I remember about him was when he was trying to get his daughter to date that doctor kid or something. I feel like we haven't seen him in 4 or 5 episodes.
  22. BOARDWALK SPOILER. Saw that ending coming from a mile away. Not the whole bomb thing, but Billie getting killed. The whole identity change thing, Chip Rossetti knowing there Nucky and Arnold were going, etc. As soon as I saw her trailing them on the boardwalk, I knew that b**** was so dead, just didn't realize they rigged a massive explosion to the theater.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 07:45 PM) And when it comes to Hamilton, $25 million a year isn't even that crazy. It's not crazy if you ignore the fact that even during his prime seasons, he was only worth that much ONE TIME in 6 major league seasons, 5 of those in possibly the most hitter friendly park in baseball. Not crazy at all.
  24. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 04:12 PM) Wow...I wish I could agree with him... I agree with him, really. 3B is really our only gaping hole. Yeah, Flowers is a question mark, but every team can afford 1-2 below average players (Flowers, Beckham). If we can get a stud 3B, and just because we are all smoking the same thing, let's say Headley.... 1) CF De Aza 2) SS Ramirez 3) RF Rios 4) 3B Headley 5) 1B Konerko 6) DH Dunn 7) LF Viciedo 8) C Flowers 9) 2B Beckham Sale-Peavy-Danks-Quintana-Santiago/Axelrod/Castro That's a really solid team.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 04:43 PM) We are also talking about a thin free agent market, which skews numbers pretty greatly. If you look at what the top players are signing for out there, $25 isn't crazy. Prince got a shade under $24m a year. Pujols got about the same. This is before the extra $25 million a year kicking in for TV money, and factoring in that the FA market is terrible this year. It isn't about production, it is about what one team is willing to pay Josh Hamilton. And both those deals were stupid and irresponsible. I'd rather burn a few good prospects by trading for a talented OF than dig myself in to a massive contractual obligation just because he is the only great FA outfielder. Even if the Rays had a $120M+ payroll, you would never see Andrew Friedman making an insane deal like the one Hamilton wants. Fortunately for Josh, there are teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, and Dodgers who give no f***s about overspending for players, and he may just end up getting what he wants from them.
