2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Also, I don't know if "Cost per win" is a real stat, but I made it up to help my point about Alexei having a better contract than the 4 guys I mentioned above. Alexei's actual cost per win last year was about $242K per win, a RIDICULOUSLY low total when you consider a 4.9 WAR. Of those other 4 guys, they all had cost per win's of about $1.6-$2.5M, which is 7-10 times more expensive than Alexei was. Now I realize this "stat" would have it's flaws, like rookies who make only $400K, but put up a 2 WAR because then you could say must be more cost-effective than Alexei was. And it would be hard for someone like Albert Pujols to be considered as cost effective as other players because although he could put up a 10 WAR, he would be getting paid $25M, making his cost per win at $2.5M, which is not exactly great. But it's just something that would be interesting to consider without those outlier players. -

A random excerpt of mine I thought I would share here. Thought about making it into a topic, but not really sure if anyone cares. Anyway, I made a post on Jim Bowden's "10 best contracts in baseball" article about how Alexei Ramirez deserved a spot, certainly over Billy Butler, Yovani Gallardo, Ricky Romero, and Johnny Cueto. After doing some research on Alexei and his WAR value vs. his contract, it's amazing how valuable he has been for us.... "he has seen his WAR improve every single year in this league. It's reasonable to think he could eclipse the 5.0 WAR mark next year. He has already been one of the most cost-effective players since he joined the league in 2008. He has been paid $4.75M in his 4 season, and has put up 12.7 WAR, a value of $55M. He has been worth OVER 10X his contract!" -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 28, 2011 -> 06:46 PM) Very true, but Bailey is also not signed yet and is a first year arb-eligible player this year, so he's a service time year ahead of Sergio. Plus, he also has had injury issues and already did the Tommy John once, so you have to count him as a bigger injury risk as well. All in all, I think their values are very comparable, and I think the "throw-in guys" in this deal, if you'd accept me calling them that, are the kind of things I wish we'd also gotten along with Molina in the Santos deal. Yeah, but we did not throw in De Aza, who I am blindly equating to Ryan Sweeney.

Red Sox going to roll with Sweendog? Hmm....I was wondering if they would then want Quentin to take over Reddick's spot, but maybe they are just going to let Sweeney give it a go.

Christmas Prank video on a young Sox fan
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to knightni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Reminds me of the family video my dad showed us over Thanksgiving. It was of my brother at the end of his little league game, and he was on the Cubs. My whole family is Cubs fans, and my dad used to put me in Cubs clothes. I was like 5 years old or something in this video and he says "Hey Joe....what's on your shirt? What team is that?". And as adorable as one could imagine, I look down at my shirt, back up at him, and then say "Soxxxxx". lol. We believe that was when my rebellion for becoming a Cubs fan occurred and I became a Sox fan forever. -

BUUUUUUMP for FUUUUUN. I was 1/3 on my bold predictions, which is OK with me. I was wrong when I said Morel would have a better rookie season than Beckham's I was wrong when I said Dunn would put a HR to the fandeck in CF (I think) I was RIGHT about Humber being our 5th starter and doing a good job. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 28, 2011 -> 03:40 AM) J4L notoriously thought Humber would provide maybe half a good inning at best. Though honestly, his case made more sense then what really happened. Oh yeah, you are right. I remember him either likening him to Lance Broadway, or saying we might as well sign Broadway too, or something of that nature. I can't remember who was agreeing with me, or maybe I was alone on that one.
-
I stopped when you suggested Humber could or would put up a 1.00 WHIP next year. If any of you recall, it was me (and maybe J4L?) who were the ONLY two people who welcomed and thought he would be a decent pitcher for us, and I STILL am not that optimistic about Humber. I think he is due for a regression, and AT BEST, he repeats his very solid 2010 proformance.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 27, 2011 -> 10:57 AM) I can't wait to see my first Epstein jersey or better yet the two guys with Epstein and Hoyer jerseys sitting next to one another. I am just curious what number they put on it. Don't expect that. Hardly any of them even know who Jed Hoyer is. They all think Theo is their GM.

I didn't get my cologne. I'll be getting my remote start tomorrow or Wednesday though. Pumped for that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) Erstad was a former number one pick though. Guy always had a ton of talent. That guy also never had an outlier season like 2000. He put up career highs in every single category. Hell, he never hit over .295 in any other season.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 11:05 PM) I sincerely hope that Luck does not go to Minnesota. Well, I'm sure the Rams aren't taking a QB, and I'm not really sure what Indy will do. Maybe one of them will trade their pick. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 25, 2011 -> 12:00 AM) Wow AP has a torn MCL and ACL. His career as a dominant runner might be over. Trent Richardson with the #3 pick? Or does Luck fall in their lap if Indy passes on him? Man, they got a lot of holes. -

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) Nothing? If they win next week, they're in. If anything, they've got EVERYTHING to play for. But being a Cowboys fan, I have little confidence that they get it done. I meant nothing to play for in that game vs. the Eagles. And yeah, I have no faith in this defense. Hope Romo's hand is better because this offense needs to bail out our D. -

God damnit Jets, that was so awful. Now the Cowboys have nothing to play for. At least Felix and Robinson have another week to get healthy, but now Romo is banged up. Just please, no injuries. And the defense showing SOME life would be nice. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 24, 2011 -> 12:07 PM) It's a little known fact, but the Fun-damentals deck actually has a row of cages, similar to a kennel. You drop off your kid and $20 bucks, they handle the rest. I'd assume you are kidding, but this sounds like a great idea. -

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 08:13 PM) Thats a fantastic package for Marshall. Torreyes has been one of the more interesting prospects out there. He's TINY (5'9" 140), but can hit and is very scrappy. There's definitely some Pedroia in him. Not surprised Theo targeted him. Kevin Goldstein says he has NO power though. Maybe more of a Darin Erstad. EDIT: After looking up Erstad's number, holy steroid 2000 season! Erstad hit .355/.409/.541/.950 with 25 HR, 100 RBI, 28 SB, put up an 8.8 WAR and an incredible defensive season. After A-Rod and Helton, Erstad was arguably the 3rd best player in baseball in 2000.

I say we sign him for 5 years/$48M. Why? Because I am putting together random numbers. -
Have been watching an interview with Vince Gilligan and the cast of BrBa on youtube for about an hour now. lol. I think I might be obsessed with this show, and I can't believe I didn't ask for the previous seasons on Blu-ray for Xmas. EDIT: In case anyone else is interested.... It takes place before S3 aired, so some of their conversation is outdated, but I'm fascinated nonetheless.
