  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 31, 2009 -> 08:43 PM) Thanks, I had a feeling he was a bum. He didn't state a single source, not even an anonymous one when he first announced this. This guy should be working for the New York Times. If you remember the Garland fiasco after the 2006 season, this writer was still insisting the deal was done as Kenny was on his way back from the winter meetings and telling everyone who asked him about the prospective deal just how false that report was. All indications were that nothing was ever even close to being done as Kenny wanted Pence (this was before Pence was producing in the Majors). It's proof that the guy takes weak leads and runs with them without ever checking anything out beforehand. What I think probably happened was that he was taking a leak in a urinal at the train station and overheard someone in a nearby stall who was talking to a buddy while taking a dump about how Oswalt wouldn't accept a deal to the Sox. He then took his s***ty source straight to his s***ty paper.
  2. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 31, 2009 -> 07:29 PM) Beckham got out, time to trade him. In all seriousness, with Kenny being as busy as he has been, we're going to be hearing about ridiculous Beckham trade rumors all the way until the deadline, and probably well into 2010. Unless we're talking Hanley, Pujols, etc. that dude is going nowhere.
  3. Breaking News!!! According to Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros are set to announce the acquisition of Jon Garland from the White Sox! Something tells me that Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle needs to find something else to do aside from writing sourceless, obviously highly imaginative articles for the Houston Chronicle. If Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle writes an article announcing that the sun and the earth are in the final stages of finalizing a deal that would bring sunlight to this part of the world tomorrow morning, then everyone who comes in contact with that article needs to immediately drop to his or her knees and begin feverishly begging invisible people for miraculous things. I have no doubt that there is a possibility of Roy Oswalt vetoing an actual deal, but if it does happen, you're not going to hear it from the mouth of Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle. The man is a butcher.
  4. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 31, 2009 -> 12:51 PM) You and me both. I remember we got blasted by a lot of people for saying that, but you can't teach the type of stuff Jackson has. Anyone who says we couldn't have offered more than Joyce is just talking silly, because there is no way the Rays were expecting him to be their starting RF this season. There were rumors that the Rays offered Jackson for Dye last offseason but the Sox didn't bite. Then the Rays signed Burrell and traded for Joyce. I did read at the time that Joyce was viewed as their RF of the future but would miss time to start the season due to injury. I also read somewhere that I guess there were rumors or reports out of Boston saying the Red Sox were close to sending us Bowden for Dye last year. So if that is true, we could have possibly had Michael Bowden, Edwin Jackson, or Homer Bailey instead of Colon. That's kind of depressing at the moment, but of course Dye is a huge part of the reason we're nearing .500 at this point.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 31, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Viciedo's been steadily improving with the bat, but yeah, he is still nowhere near ready. I'm not sure why some of us even thought he was during ST. A player no one has ever seen getting hyped as the Cuban Babe Ruth will do that to people.
  6. QUOTE (Jimmywins1 @ May 31, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) We offered Richard and Poreda for 3 years of Peavy, no way they get traded for 3 months of Bedard. I don't think Bedard is worth either of them straight up. He's supposedly not the best clubhouse guy and he's an injury risk. The draft picks would be the only reason I'd want him, and I'd gladly give up several prospects who I would value less than Type A comp picks in next years draft. I have no problem trading either Richard, Poreda, or both, but not a chance in hell for Bedard.
  7. Edit: I just suggested pick up Beltre and Bedard together, but actually Beltre is only hitting .216/.249/.320 right now as an $11M/yr player with 8BB and 35K. Ouch! Russell Branyan must have done a little midnight surgery and swapped brains while Beltre was sleeping or something. Screw Beltre then, and screw this imaginary deal.
  8. I had written him off as a reliever (although I really liked him in that role) and I was unhappy to put him in the rotation. I thought Jose should be given at least another start to see if he showed any sort of improvement since I felt going to Richard was basically looking for a decent first 5 IP and then turning it over to Carrasco or something. Boy I am glad to be wrong. The way he can sidearm ace a RH hitter with a 94mph inside fastball after forcing him to cover the outside part of the plate is beautiful. I'm not going to eat crow should he keep this up because I don't believe in shooting wild birds for the sake of sports bets, but I will gladly buy a lengua burrito and eat that instead. I'd still trade him though, lol. But only for someone very good, not someone who is just pretty good like I would have before. And f*** Peavy and his 12.10 ERA in the playoffs anyway. Clayton may not have a Cy Young, but at least he has playoff sac.
  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 30, 2009 -> 12:07 AM) Given that I’m sober, I’m not sure I have a legitimate excuse. I’m actually a bit ashamed of myself, right now. I have no reason either. It just kind of... happened.
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 30, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) I will long say that I'm not certain there is another site in all of baseball with the in depth minor league knowledge of there specific team more than Soxtalk. And its a compliment to everyone on here. You posted this: But you missed one thing! I say he lost all credibility when he listed all those pitchers and said they are "probably not going to log a week in the majors combined." Fernando Hernandez - the ex-Oakland A - was one of those pitchers, and he logged over a week in the Majors. Doh! I was hoping someone was going to pick up on that and call him out. And I also think Fernando ends up getting another chance at some point, although I'd bet heavily against it being with the Sox. I still like Wassermann a lot too as a righty specialist and I think he'll spend some time in the league, but I don't see that being with the Sox either. I expect both guys to probably get traded for something very small or get released/granted minor league FA and then catch on somewhere else after an injury or bullpen implosion, then stick around a little while. I agree on Omogrosso too from seeing him in ST. There was a webcast I saw once where he pitched 2 innings I think and he looked tough, plus in general I love sidearmers/submariners/3/4 guys out of the pen. Bill Melton was raving about him. Link was another guy I saw, didn't look all that impressive, but supposedly the Sox really like him and of course he was nails at Birmingham last year. I like Harrell a lot if he can throw enough good strikes, but just from seeing him a couple times he appeared pretty wild in the zone. I love that career minor league HR rate though. Overall I think we've got a few guys in our system with pretty good chances at becoming relievers along with a couple guys probably viewed as relievers who could end up putting it together as starters.
  11. I want to take this opportunity to say HAHA at all the people who were dogging Edwin Jackson over the offseason. He's another guy I was mad that the Sox didn't pick up. Another recent guy is Anthony Reyes but he's having a bad season so far. Supposedly he's not very coachable, but I'd still like to see what Coop could do with him. On topic, Greinke is for real and could very easily win the Cy Young this year. I'm scared to face him tomorrow. His numbers BTW are hilarious: 0.0 HR/9??? LOL. That's not supposed to happen.
  12. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 29, 2009 -> 11:48 PM) I knew this would come up. You saw it too? If you don't mind, may I ask what in the hell either of us were doing on that forum?
  13. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ May 29, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) making the best team you can from ex-Whitesox'ers. Not as easy as in years past. No backup catchers available. Who did I miss??? 1. (SS) Orlando Cabrera .240, 2HR, 16RBI 2. (CF) Aaron Rowand .279, 5HR, 22RBI 3. (RF) Magglio Ordonez .263, 2HR, 19RBI 4. (LF) Carlos Lee .316, 8HR, 29RBI 5. (3B) Joe Crede .240 9HR, 22RBI 6. (DH) Ken Griffey Jr .218, 5HR, 12RBI 7. (Ca) Miguel Olivo .235, 3HR, 13RBI 8. (1B) Ross Gload .274 1HR, 8RBI 9. (2B) Juan Uribe .304 0HR, 7RBI Sweeney LF Cabrera 2B Lee 1B Ordonez DH Rowand RF Crede 3B Cameron CF Uribe SS Olivo C Bench: Reed OF, Valdez SS, Corky C, Gload 1B/LF The pitching would suck bad so I'd load the team with defense. If it weren't so heavily RH that wouldn't be that bad of a lineup either.
  14. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 29, 2009 -> 11:27 PM) I thought Whisler topped out at 90? Broadway will get a shot at starting I would think and as jason pointed out a week or so ago he may find success somewhere else. The only time I ever saw him was during a ST in relief where he was like 94-96 and all he threw were fastballs. As a starter I don't know what his velocity is like, but he'll be in relief for us.
  15. QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 29, 2009 -> 10:45 PM) Good for Wes, he's a good guy, I'm happy for him. He worked hard for that promotion. JPN, what does Whisler offer besides his mid-90's FB?
  16. Great to see good games out of Clayton, Fields, Anderson, Alexei once again. This game and tomorrow's game are huge for us since Greinke pitches on Sunday. Just keep on winning series' and focus on .500.
  17. Considering we'd be eating lots and lots of salary either way, I'd rather keep him in Triple A as Bartolo insurance and see how long Clayton can keep this up. If something incredible happens where Clayton and Colon are both pitching well and Jose is throwing strikes, then we can bring him up and slot him in the front of the pen.
  18. Great deal for the Sox. They dump Broadway and replace Corky without taking on salary. I think the greatest sign is that Kenny has really been busy. Dumped MacDougal, dumped Owens, dumped Broadway, personally scouting draft prospects, trying to deal for Peavy... I like where this is heading. This will be an interesting season all around.
  19. QUOTE (robinventura23 @ May 29, 2009 -> 10:22 PM) Whisler coming up On el radio Farmio said Corky kissed Coop on the head during the kiss cam segment. I guess he was kissing the Sox goodbye? Actually kind of sad to see Corky go. I liked the guy and hope he catches on in a back-up role somewhere.
  20. QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ May 29, 2009 -> 10:22 PM) Now the Sox have a Castro, a Cuban Missile, and a Cuban Tank? Nice catch!
  21. YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG IM SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SEEYA LANCE!!!! I COULDNT GIVE ONE FLYING f*** ABOUT RAMON CASTRO BUT BROADWAY IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KYLE MCCULLOCH YOURE NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  22. How about instead of assuming that salary we put that money into the draft coming up... Corky is fine. As long as the pitchers like throwing to him then that's all that matters. Now if we're talking about swapping Castro for Betemit plus a halfway decent prospect then I'd do that. Actually, Betemit playing 1B today, maybe someone else is watching? With Delgado out it's not all that bad of an idea.
  23. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ May 29, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) I'm workin at a bar and i need to advertise for the next ufc event, last time i advertised 7:45 undercard fights, but I never saw anything til 9. What time is the first fight going to be central time? Before that, you need to advertise for the WEC card on June 7th. Brown-Faber II... Another beautiful Jose Aldo destruction... :mouthwatering
  24. Somebody needs to batter Ozzie Guillen with a crowbar if he even thinks of taking PT away from Brian Anderson after all the s*** he's put Sox fans through with CF'ers over the last 4 seasons. The kid is just starting to look like he's capable of becoming a league average hitter to go along with GG-caliber defense and now he's going to end up riding the bench once again in order to trot out minor league roster filler? Wonderful.
