I think the Royals will be better in 2013, but for the long run they'll lose this trade. Kinda like that the AL Central teams are trying to get better. Force the Sox to do something even bigger if they intend to win 90 games next year.

Shirek is 27. Seems like a weird last minute decision since they already announced the other four first. Maybe a team wants him, but they don't want to chance it in the Rule 5, so the Sox protected him to trade him.
