Interesting names that have cleared waivers..
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 09:28 PM) Majority means 50% plus 1. Most can mean majority but it's more often associated with nearly all. Consider an example: You have 10 petri dishes. If 6 out of the 10 cultures were good. You would say the majority of cultures were good. If 9 out of 10 were good you would say most of the cultures were good. Without question, yes. You can even assume that there are more requests for ML waivers than any other type. Main Entry: 1most Pronunciation: 'mOst Function: adjective Etymology: Middle English, from Old English m[AE]st; akin to Old High German meist most, Old English mAra more -- more at MORE 1 : greatest in quantity, extent, or degree 2 : the majority of I'll stick with what the word means not what some people think it means.

Interesting names that have cleared waivers..
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) What exactly is there left to debate? That "most" means better than 90%? That there are close to 1200 players on ML rosters? That 90% of that is 1080? Even if you assume that most teams are 1-2 players shy of the 40 man it's still over 1000 players. That on average there are less than 250 OR & UR waivers per year? So what does that leave? ML & SPL waivers. ML can be withdrawn & SPL can't . If a team claims a player off SPL waivers they just have to pick up the contract. No cost in talent other than the impact the new player has on your budget & your roster. So what's reasonable for a SPL waiver count? 60? Add it all up & you're still looking at 700 shy of what is needed to say "most" players. Taking the Newsday article into consideration you're still 350 players shy. It's reasonable to say "LOTS" or even the "MAJORITY" but not most. Hawk's term as GM proved he didn't know how to do basic math very well :rolly According to Webster's, most only means the majority not at least 90%.

*Official* Eric Chavez Speculation/Dream Thread
QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) Maybe because the chances are he will be better than he was in May. If after a bad slump, his #s are so much better than Chavez and Cruddy, that just proves my point. He is worth looking into at the deadline for a stop gap solution. How do you know that May is a slump. Maybe he was playing over his head in April and the May numbers are the real Vinny Castila at 37.

*Official* Eric Chavez Speculation/Dream Thread
QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:21 PM) You must be kidding nitetrain. If Castilla is as bad as some people here believe, how can he be their franchise player? And even if he is the face of the team, it means squat. This is a business. Come trade deadline, when the Nats realize they have no shot at beating the Braves or Marlins, they will be selling. They can't sell to much. They need to keep some name players around to interest prospective new owners.

Veto Question
If an owner says they accidentally accepeted a trade and asks the other owners in the league to veto it, should it be vetoed or should they have to live with their mistake. I'm not sure if I should veto, so I would like to get some opinions.

Around The Majors
I'm all for a Baseball only fourm.

Unfair trade?
Ufortunatly I am really lacking power in the infield, I have Sean Casey, Luis Castillo and Chone Figgins. The trade has been Vetoed a second time now, I guess I will have to pick up Dallas McPherson and hope he gets healthy.
-
Unfair trade?
Thats about what I thought and it was the other guy who offered me Blalock.
-
Unfair trade?
Just a quick question, would any of you consider Blalock for Pedro an unfair trade? It was vetoed in one of my fantasy leagues so I thought I would get some opinions.

Looking for some fantasy baseball advice
Beckett's health problems concern me. Back problems are never good and the blister issues are still a concern. Injuries can happen to anyone but Beckett's track record makes him more of a risk.

Had to bump this, it just wasn't right that it was on the second page.

Somebody Proposed me this trade
That depends on how good the rest of your starting pitching is.

The Duece
Looks like we are short one team. Do we have someone lined up to take the last spot?

Fact or Fiction
Fiction- Buehrle and Garcia will get 17 and 16 wins respectivly. Fiction- Willie will be gone part way through springtraining. Fact- El Duque will be good for 150 innings. Fiction- Hermanson will be the closer by June. Fiction- He will have a good year but will not beet his career numbers. Fiction- He won't be back until mid May and they will use him cautiously at first. Fact- He can bat lefty and he is in shape, they will find ways to get him in the lineup at DH or in the OF. Fact- B-Mac gets in done after getting called up to make a spot start in a double header in August. The last one is to tough to call as I can really see things going either way for the Sox this year.

****OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2005 PREDICTIONS THREAD****
The Sox will lose the first game of the season in a blowout causing half of the posters on the site to spend the rest of the night posting in what will eventually become a thirty page thread about how KW is an idiot and should be fired. Jermaine Dye will ground into two double plays in the game and those same posters will be calling for his head. Podsednik will be thrown out in the fourth inning on his first stolen base attempt of the year and people will be longing for the days of Willie Harris. A J will be struck out in each of his four at bats causing people to say he is trying to play bad to help the Twins. Iguchi will commit two errors in the game once again causing people to demand Willie Harris regain his starting spot. Hermanson and Vizcaino will combine to give up 6 runs in the 7th inning causing many posters to post about how they knew those two would suck all along. The Sox will then go on to have their best record since 2000 and all those same posters will say they were always behind this team and loved all of KW's moves. Now for a serious prediction Dustin Hermanson will be the regular closer by June.

Opening Day vs. Cleveland 4-4-05
QUOTE(YoungstownIndians @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 08:52 PM) Your pen sucked. Just not as bad as ours. You guys blew leads against us, cough9-0cough; Matt Lawton to center, and you did the same to us. Those back to back extra inning victories on JOSE JIMENEZ. With HOWRY-WICKMAN 3 BLOWN SAVES BEFORE 22 So we DEFINATELY Improved. Those surgicaly repaired arms didn't hold up that well last season, in September Howry's ERA was 5.06 and Wickman's was 6.30 that would have me quite concerned about the end of my bullpen.

Javier Vasquez to the Sox????
QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) I really don't want Vazquez here. Does he have better "stuff" then Garland? More then likely. Does he have so much better stuff that he's worth over 6 Mil dollars more then Garland? NO WAY IN HELL! Not only that i've heard he can opt out of his contract at the end of the year if he doesn't like us or make us trade him. So if he tanks it and he forces a trade then we'd be giving Garland and whatever prospect for s***. I don't want him here. We have a pretty good idea what Garland will do, he's done it the last three years. For all we know Vazquez could get lit up in the cell. No way should we pay 6 mil more plus prospects for a maybe! He can't opt out of his contract, he can demand a trade after the season though. The trade demand is a bit of an empty threat though because if the team doesn't trade him by March 15 I think it is he has to recind his demand or opt for free agency and he would be stupid to walk away from all that guarenteed money.

The Vazquez "Auction" Begins
Of course the dbacks would turn it down, but at this point I don't see Vazquez being worth any more to the Sox.
-
The Vazquez "Auction" Begins
The only way I would take Vazquez is if the Dbacks took Contreras and Everett, if thats not enough for them they could have Borchard too. Any more than that and its not worth it IMO.

projected wins by our rotation
Beuhrle - 16 Garcia - 16 Hernandez - 10 Garland - 13 Contreras - 10

Wade Miller non-tendered
He is definitly a risk, but at this point it may be a risk the Sox have to take because if we stand pat it will be another .500 season if we are lucky.
