  1. 3 of the 5 preseason All-Americans are from Illinois. Guess how many play for Illinois?
  2. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 11:48 AM) I found this incredibly boring. Yeah, the only way it would have been exciting would have involved a very gruesome death.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) Because of the steroid era, there is pretty much no reliable data here. And the recent banning of amphetamines, I'm sure those helped plenty of older guys keep the needed energy going during a long season.
  4. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 10:00 AM) Discovery channel must have a plan if he falls. I would assume they cut right to commercial. You can't show something like that on TV. I read yesterday there was a 10 second delay for that very reason.
  5. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) I've never watched this guy before. If he falls, is there like a net or does he just die? He just dies. I think at least 7 of his family members have died doing random circus acts like this. There is a famous video of his great-grandfather falling off a high wire in Puerto Rico, 100+ feet in the air, killing him.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) LaCanfora reporting that Trestmans job security is tenuous, and players have tuned the coaching staff out, as well as a lot of in-fighting. Well, 2014-2015 was fun like a root canal With the Vikings win yesterday, the Bears now have sole possession of last place in the NFC Norris.
  7. Sorry to crush your dreams Lillian, but the Phillies already re-signed Grady for 2015
  8. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 10:20 PM) Romo's velocity is down bad and I don't like paying guys for their production in a pitcher-friendly ballpark in the NL. Gergorson is another guy who built a track record in two pitcher-friendly parks. In fact, he has pitched in SD an OAK which have the lowest BABIPs from 2009-2012. I am not saying he's not a good piece, but I do think his market is going to be higher than he's going to be worth. I agree about Gregerson, look at his career home/away splits against Home: .178/.247/.262, 7 HR allowed Away: .253/.310/.386, 22 HR allowed
  9. Hawks lead the league in shots on goal by a large margin, yet are bottom 10 in goals scored, hockey gonna hockey. No need to panic yet.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) I am actually starting to second guess part of that though. I'm not sure how it works with a major league contract though. It states his signing bonus is hit by these pools. Does that mean if he signs a $100 million deal with no bonus, that he isn't subject to those caps? Now I am confused. The more I read, it sounds like you are right. I guess how many "amateur" international players are available that are worth risking $100 million? Or any serious major league contract?
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 08:13 PM) It is also worth mentioning that any signings above 15% of a teams international pool means a 100% fine on those dollars. A $10 million bonus for the Yankees would cost them $20 million in reality. Interesting. For some reason I thought Cuban players were exempt, so I was gonna ask for more clarification, but Google is my friend. This kid's age is the difference.
  12. The only problem is that given the success of Abreu/Cespedes/Puig and the new draft rules, teams are far more willing to spend big bucks on these Cuban players, so he won't be cheap.
  13. Neither Chicago team makes the playoffs next year
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 11:32 PM) These late games are so good. Just wish it wasn't so late. The Pac 12 late night games have been incredibly entertaining. If you can stay awake.
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 10:50 PM) He had a much better receiving core. He did throw a lot of jump balls to Evans when in trouble, but they are so bad now.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 10:29 PM) Never forget that South Carolina was preseason top ten. Remember when Kenny "The Thrill" Hill beat them in Week 1 and was already better than Johnny Manziel? That was fun.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 09:38 PM) That Treadwell injury. Wow. Prayers for that kid That is just, wow. Half a yard from another season defining win, then boom. Game over, best receiver lost for the season most likely.
  18. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 31, 2014 -> 10:18 AM) That's how you pitch to a lot of the Royals' hitters. Cain, Perez, and Escobar love swinging at high pitches. That's why Harold Reynolds dropped the "You can't walk off the island" line about Perez in game 1. (Never mind that he is from Venezuela.)
  19. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) Emmit Holt public enemy number one. Sounds like he pulled a Jamar Smith
  20. I'm down to give anyone with an arm a minor league contract.
  21. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 30, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) Is anyone interested or intrigued by Wallenda's walk across the Chicago River this weekend? I am not hearing that much pub about it. I would love to go downtown and check it out, but will likely just tune in. Good thing he didn't have it scheduled for today
  22. Does MLB have a minority interview rule like the NFL does with the Rooney rule?
  23. QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Oct 31, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) Maddon's great. But I have a few observations, and potential pitfalls, regarding his hiring: (1) Two weeks ago, Renteria was swell because of the progress made by Castro and Rizzo. Why mess with that? (2) If we've learned one thing from the dominance of sabermetrics, it's that the front office guys run things, all the way down to the field. (Ask Art Howe and even Terry Francona about that.) Maddon is a lot of things, but one thing he is not is a shrinking violet. I'll be curious to see how it works out with Epstein and Hoyer. (3) There seems to be some groundswell that Joe's presence will lure free agents. But if the reason for Maddon's reputation was his ability to handle YOUNG players, how do we know he can actually handle a team with those veterans? In fact, the best Rays veterans were lost because of budget (Shields, Crawford). That's exactly what he came from in Tampa. He wasn't the lead dog there, he wasn't ordering all those shifts and what not on his own. Epstein is more probably more of a dictator than Freidman was, but it's not that different than in Tampa.
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 31, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) I also had a dream that I was hired to be a radio deejay for a nationally syndicated radio station and my personality was Laser Beam Blake. That's why they're dreams. Good Morning Bismarck! Laser Beam Blake and the Beaver here, ready to entertain you this morning!

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 31, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) Maybe the Sox should consider talking Jeter out of retirement. He has a ton of playoff experience. A Peavy signing makes too much sense. He just started game 6 of the World Series. LEADERSHIP!
