Sox sign Orlando Hudson
My god, Hudson's been awful this year. But not as awful as Brent Morel...haha.

The Miami Marlins thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 18, 2012 -> 11:26 PM) Serious question: Is Oz a candidate for manager of the year? Three over .500 and right there. Is you serious? Let me get this straight... The Marlins, who were supposed to be good, get off to a horrible start (just like when he managed the Sox and he also get suspended for 5 games for running his mouth). Then their good players finally start playing like they're supposed to again. And now that they're only 3 above .500 and in like 4th place, you think Ozzie should get consideration for manager of the year? It's May Greg, awards aren't won in May. And 3 games above .500 for a team that some deemed good enough to win 90 games is underachieving.

2012 Cubs thread
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 18, 2012 -> 09:52 PM) Honestly I had zero issue with how it went down today, I thought it was appropriate and fitting. The guy was a pretty good pitcher when healthy, injuries killed him, he was a fan favorite, and some good memories there. Having him take his last pitches and get his last time in the sun was fine. It wasn't something over the top like a pregame ceremony or anything. Average due to overall results, sure. But I heard something today that he has the highest k/9 besides Randy Johnson in history. Not sure if that's correct, but that's not average. We all know how it played out. But saying "average pitcher" is a bit false. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...=0&sort=8,d He has the third most for a starting pitcher, with Mark Prior being second given FanGraphs' definition of qualified. I guess it depends on what you say is "qualified". If qualification means 1000 innings, then yeah, Wood is second. If it's 2000, he's not.

2012 Cubs thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 18, 2012 -> 06:46 PM) The outpouring of love for this guy is crazy to me. All for a very average pitcher. When Wood was healthy, he was a 3-4 win pitcher. So yeah, I'd say he's a little better than average.

2012 Films Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 18, 2012 -> 11:53 AM) I want to reiterate that I am ridiculously excited to see Prometheus. That is all. I read somebody's plot preview from a screening. It was fairly detailed. I sort of want to see it, but I'm not sure I want to stay for all the weird s*** that will be in it.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 18, 2012 -> 03:38 PM) He did more for the Sox (more wins, World Series) than Wood for the Cubs. Half the pitcher, infinitely better achievements. Win.

QUOTE (Capn12 @ May 18, 2012 -> 03:35 PM) /shrug I hate all things Cubs, but I didn't think it was a bad thing to do. Wood had some of the most electric stuff most had seen, when he came up, but is sadly a perfect example of how mother nature > talent. They should have done the same for Sammy Sosa too.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 18, 2012 -> 02:08 PM) Samardzzjzlja leads off. hit him or wait for Starlin? I'd rather see him hit, then have to leave the game. Cubs bullpen sucks.

Hit him, but don't make it that obvious. Do it on the second or third pitch.

Avenge him, Rios.

Owww. I remember when Paulie got hit in the face by Pavano (I think) and stayed in the game. I think he homered off him in that game too.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 18, 2012 -> 02:01 PM) Well of course he's better than a pitcher, but what is your point? He still is often times far away from his AL counterpart at that position. Making an AL pitcher bat as compared to the standard NL pitcher at the plate has a much smaller "talent" gap You have to look at this from a net gain/net loss perspective, at least that's how I look at it. At the end of the day, AL teams lose offensive output when you take into account the games they play in NL parks. Meanwhile, NL teams have nothing to lose.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 18, 2012 -> 01:57 PM) Who says you're adding a good hitter? It's laughable seeing some of the guys who get the DH role when the NL teams come to the AL stadiums You're adding a much better hitter than a pitcher. Pitcher wOBAs are like .160-.200. Even a replacement level bench player outproduces that by A LOT. Look at it this way. When AL teams visit an NL park, they replace a on average .350 wOBA hitter with one that might have a .150 wOBA, at best. When NL teams visit AL parks, they replace an on average .180 wOBA pitcher with a .300 wOBA hitter. You tell me who has the advantage.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 18, 2012 -> 01:56 PM) The Cubs have to DH Reed Johnson & Joe Mather, while their opponents get to DH Dunn or David Ortiz. That's a big difference. They still don't lose a vital part of their offense like AL teams do.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 18, 2012 -> 01:33 PM) Because while AJ was on his huge slide, Rios started knocking some guys in, and so Ventura flipped them. Then the next game, AJ started hitting again...but it's only been 3 games. I guess Robin didn't want to mess with success.
