Jorge Cantu to the Rangers
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 04:13 PM) Rangers close to signing him. He'd be an upgrade over Davis.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 04:10 PM) KW didn't have to listen. That too. But it just confuses me how you can think the combination of Jones/Kotsay can somehow outproduce Thome.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 03:59 PM) The best thing we could have done is either signedThome or claimed Cust and stashed him AAA after he was DFA'D. Now, we're in a sitiuation where we have to make a move. f***in' Ozzie.

Prince Fielder Speculation
Putz's numbers are for real. Unless he gets hurt or too tired his numbers are here to stay.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) I doubt he would have signed with us if we did. If nothing else, hopefully he's pitched himself at least to the point where we get a pick for him. Really depends on the money involved on it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 03:45 PM) Someone's going to fire 3/$30 off on Putz this offseason unless he gets hurt or falls apart. Makes me wish we could have put an option in that contract.

Video Game Catch-All Thread
I'm actually excited for this year's Madden. Players no longer run like they're stuck in mud. They got a new and less boring play by play man in Gus Johnson. The whole gameflow feature looks kind of interesting. Plus, it looks like the presentation has taken a step up this year. They have nice superbowl celebration video cuts now and Obama is in it! lol http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/110/1108432p1.html

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) I don't think that'll be enough to keep Putz. Give him 2 years and $18 million. I bet he stays. His best buddy's here.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 03:20 PM) That is not how it worked. Flowers was promoted to AAA mid-last-season, and put up a .286/.364/.438/.803, which is decent for just being promoted. And his power is actually up this year. But in this past offseason, he apparently went on his own to an old coach for help, changed his approach, and it f***ed him up good. Now he's trying to transition back to what he was doing previously, and its not going well. Basically, his head got f***ed with. I think he's likely to improve before the season is out. I don't know why he saw the need to change his approach. His approach was perfectly fine before. He could probably put up Mike Napoli-like numbers minus the huge power. He still has good power, just not .500 SLG type of pop.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) I remember the report was that he only wanted to play RF and be the first Japanese player on the team, so he went to the Cubs even though the Sox offered more money. I could be wrong though. We were gonna end up sticking him in center. I remembered the whole being the first Japanese player thing was more important to him.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 03:03 PM) $6.5 million next year for him? No thank you. He keeps getting worse and worse and is now a 4th OF for the Cubs. Thank god we had Jermaine Dye in RF & Takatsu has already played for us, or the Sox would be stuck with that awful contract. The Cubs have a pretty stacked OF TBH with you. I'd like Fukudome on this team a lot more so than somebody like Pierre.

Dan Haren traded to the Angels
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:58 PM) Mark Buehrle would also stink. His Xfip has been 4.61 (09), 4.1 (08), 4.6 (07), and 5.01 (06). Typically put, pitchers without a ton of strikeout stuff who are more the prototypical lefties are going to have a little higher statisitcal numbers, but that doesn't necessarily make them bad pitchers. I've watched a lot of Saunders and he isn't a bum. He is a league average pitcher who has been successful in the AL. Is he a stud, hell no, but would he look good in our rotation right now, yes. Buehrle's FIP stands at 3.93 this year, nearly 3/4 a run lower than Saunders'. Mark Buehrle has a career 4.16 FIP and a 4.23 xFIP. That's above average. That, along with his ability to eat lots of innings makes him a valuable pitcher capable of putting up 3-4 WAR annually. Joe Saunders is not that, not even close. And I'm not even sure I'd want Saunders over Hudson right now.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:57 PM) If Torres had trade value, he would have almost certainly been dealt a long time ago. 27 year old pitchers who have mediocre control and less than spectacular stuff have little to no trade value whatsoever. He really doesn't offer anything unique or exciting, and his ceiling is more or less that of a 5th starter or long reliever in the major leagues. He offers little long-term value to any major league club, but does offer depth to the White Sox. Hey, he sounds like a younger version of Joe Saunders!

Fukudome is projected to hit with a .346 wOBA for the rest of the year by ZiPS. That .364 OBP would look great in the leadoff or two hole.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:44 PM) This could be a thing: Ken_Rosenthal Attention, Fukudome shoppers: Source says #Cubs would pay part of $4M-plus left this year and "quite a bit" of $13.5M salary next year. #MLB 3 minutes ago via web Would you trade for him if the Cubs would pay $7 million of his contract next year and $2 million of it this year? I know I would definitely consider it.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:47 PM) Hmm. Sure you could do that but we're strapped for cash and I'd hate to invest millions in a closer when we could have one just as effective for peanuts. We've been giving money to the closer for the past two years. I think we can afford to invest some money in Putz. Plus, if you get to the ALCS somehow with Dunn, you make some nice revenue and the payroll will be a little more flexible next year.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/ Type in any player's name, or look through teams' rosters using the team names below. On any player page, click "mle," and it will adjust everything from that players current production to the majors. It's obviously not an exact science (which is best seen in Buck Coats' line, where he has an equivalent overall line of .274/.333/.374/.707 with 2 HR on the year, yet his splits suggest he would have 1 HR against LHP and 2 HR against RHP with a .728 OPS against both), but it gives a pretty good idea of what a player would do. Hudson's MLE FIP is 4.51, for example, so it should be reasonably expected that he will pitch fairly well for the remainder of the season. Wasn't Hudson's expected Major League FIP about 3.60 last season?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:45 PM) I assumed he was being groomed to eventually be our closer. If he goes who closes for us next year? You take that money you were going to give to Jenks and you give it to Putz.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:36 PM) That pen takes a huge nose dive after we lose him and Liney, Pena, and Threets need to throw more innings. Sergio's recent contribution to this bullpen = meh. This bullpen thrives because of Putz and Thornton. As long as those two are here, it's fine. If Jenks comes back to form like I think he will, you won't even notice Santos missing a majority of the time. We've been too spoiled by our bullpen thus far.

Why doesn't Ozzie DH Viciedo?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:38 PM) Steve Stone called out Lou Piniella on June 9th. From June 10th through today, Colvin has started 30 games and has played in 39 overall. His line... .238/.293/.485/.777, 9 HR, 37 K in 140 plate appearances Colvin has been far from a star since that point in time. You just knew that Colvin's stats were going to dip when he got full playing time. He can't hit lefties and his low OBP doesn't make sense in the leadoff spot. You'd rather hit Castro there and move Colvin down to 6th or 7th to split up that mess of right handed hitters in the middle of their lineup.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) I think Hawk has started rubbing off on him. Steve still thinks pitcher wins are important and have predictive value. In Garcia's case, they really don't.
