  1. Yeah so in hindsight, I'm not a fan of how 2016 and 2017 went but there was kind of an org philosophy to insulate the system with safer talent. It's hard to call the 2016 draft bad because you could have 5-6 big leaguers from that class. 2017 was a problem though. It's just too many college players and low upside college players. The worst thing that they did was overslot college players in round two of drafts. It just never made any sense. Instead of giving Gavin Sheets or Steele Walker $2 million, give that to a high school guy. Nick Hostetler would tell you though that he's more proud of the processes he put in place and the changes made to the department than he is any of the players he took. They're in a solid spot going forward in amateur scouting and more importantly in development.
  2. It's complicated. I generally prefer upside. Others aren't like that though. Looking at the glut of outfielders that the Sox had for example, I always preferred Luis Gonzalez to Blake Rutherford and Steele Walker because I was confident that Gonzalez could stay in CF and that makes him more valuable than a corner only guy. I usually only rank relievers that can be high leverage guys. The Sox system is weird though. We have some writers who think it makes more sense to put Ian Hamilton or even like Will Kincanon at the back end of the list but I'd much prefer an 18 year old catcher that mashed in the DSL. Proximity to majors matters for me too though. I would probably trade Jonathan Stiever before I'd trade Matthew Thompson but I rank Stiever higher because he's closer to the majors. It honestly just depends. My personal list went out for Patreon subscribers today. I put Jake Burger at #14. I had him at #30 in the preseason. Him being healthy and me seeing him personally in Schaumburg a few weeks back was a game changer for me.
  3. We always use 130 at bats, 50 IP or 45 non September days on the active roster. That's what the industry generally uses. Mendick graduated due to at-bats. Collins due to 45 man days. Robert will cross 130 at-bats in a couple days so the "system" is about to get a lot worse haha.
  4. Some interesting names on the back end of this list. What does everyone think? Should someone be higher/lower? https://www.futuresox.com/2020/09/02/top-white-sox-prospect-rankings-midseason-2020-16-30/
  5. I don't think it matters. I think they're keeping the classes the same. Teams don't have any $$ anyway.
  6. It's doubtful that James McCann wants to return. He's going to go be the starter somewhere.
  7. He's opposed to doing the entire, gross courting process and giving his scouts $3-4 million to play with. Tatis and Paddy are boys though so I'm guessing it's different
  8. He's supposed to be the 2022 class I think but I'm not sure. I've heard he's signing here but there could be an international draft by then.
  9. It depends. It's the same kids, mostly. Every team basically already has all their money spent on agreements. Some teams are screwed though. I think the Padres reneged on a few offers because they overcommitted, knowing that they could trade for more $$. MLB is outlawing the exchange of international funds which messes with some teams. Look at Colas for example. If he gets cleared to sign in November, theoretically he could've signed in this period that was supposed to start in July (now starts in January 2021) but he could decide to sign in July of 2021 instead. Now he doesn't really have that luxury and everyone is out of $$. If he waits now, he can't sign until Janury of 2022 and he'll be like 23 or 24 already by then.
  10. It won't be. The 2020 period opens on January 15, 2021 and the 2021 period is scheduled top open on January 15, 2022. I'd think there's an international draft after that. It's a definite issue. The White Sox should have a 2nd AZL team. They have so many really young outfielders and nowhere for some guys to play. Many college players will need to go right to Kannapolis after being drafted.
  11. Yes, January 15th Nobody is in AZ. Some guys basically live at the facility in the DR. Everyone else is at home, doing their own thing under instructions from the club.
  12. I have no idea anymore. I heard the Sox were confident on Cespedes but Colas just seems destined to be here.
  13. This is what I've heard about next year's draft. Between 20-30 rounds, bonus pools same as this year. $20K max after last round but the guys after round 10 will still be $125K. It'll look like a normal draft but just be shorter. The other thing that will help the White Sox: it sounds like the Commissioner will alter the draft order. They are going to use some or all of the 2019 record plus the 2020 record to determine the draft order.
  14. It's Ranking's Week at FutureSox and we dropped the Just Missed portion of the list today. I wrote up 26 names here: https://www.futuresox.com/2020/09/01/just-missed-prospects-outside-the-midseason-2020-top-30/
  15. $20 million? It's close to $50 million. McCann and Colome is like $15 million. Decline the options on EE, Cishek and Gio and it's another $25 million. Non-tender Rodon and Mazara for another $10 million or so. They should have plenty of $$.
  16. I'd trade Dunning and Stiever for Lance Lynn but I doubt that's enough honestly.
  17. I doubt the White Sox can sign both players. Yoelqui Cespedes is free to sign right now. Oscar Colas hasn't been cleared. The 2020 signing period that was supposed to take place on J2 has been pushed back to January 15th of 2021. The White Sox have a deal with Cuban RHP Norge Vera for $1.5 million and they have agreements with 6 others for $1.8 million total. I wrote about them here: https://www.futuresox.com/2020/02/18/the-white-sox-are-eyeing-cuban-prospects-in-international-marketplace/ The White Sox have roughly $5.5 million total to spend and there are no trades for next two periods. The White Sox have just over $2 million to spend. One of Cespedes or Colas would likely sign for that amount but I really doubt they could get both. Moving the signing period really messed them up if the intention was to sign both players.
  18. McCann isn't interested in doing this. He wants to start somewhere and he'll be given that opportunity
  19. They didn't use the year of service to not have him play. They think Madrigal is their 2B of the future. Mendick is a utility guy. He might be a really good one but that's the pecking order.
  20. I think Madrigal will be back on Tuesday vs the PIrates and if not, probably for the Kansas City series.
  21. Yes he will. They already burned the 7th year. Madrigal will start at 2B as soon as he's ready.
  22. And McCann was horrible against everyone before last season. We can do this all day. The White Sox aren't sitting one of the biggest signings in franchise history to play James McCann instead after said signing has been off for 3 days. They have 4 guys (Abreu, McCann, EE and Grandal) that are all good vs LHP. Someone has to sit.
  23. Yasmani Grandal is a better player than James McCann is so there is plenty of reasons. McCann is awesome against lefties but Grandal is as well. Would you play McCann over Abreu or EE against LHP? That's basically what it would be.
