Addison Reed trade from DBacks' perspective
Y2Jimmy0 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Sep 20, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) 3rd division out of how many divisions? 10 divisions? He's 10th in MLB in OPS for third basemen. He's 5th in MLB against righties. He can get around 500 PA's a year against righties and he costs no money. Would your idea be to spend considerable resources to try to acquire one of the 4 hitters better than him? Do you think Davidson will ever be able to put up an .821 OPS against righties (74% of pitchers faced)? Gillaspie is an offensive black hole against LHP though. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that Davidson has an .820 OPS against LHP at some point either. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 12:28 PM) This could be true. For some reason, there was a Pirates scout at the White Sox game Sept. 9. What I don't understand is if people don't like Dayan Viciedo or Adam Dunn, why would they like Pedro Alvarez? I do like Adam Dunn. I like Pedro Alvarez as well. The problem here is that Alvarez has been nowhere near the player that Dunn was. Dunn was an obp machine for like 8 straight years. Alvarez hits for power, doesn't walk, and strikes out a lot. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) And what if Kate Upton tells Verlander to go scratch because she is with me now? Why is it OK to write off Reed but not Davidson? I didn't write off Reed. I just said that I'd rather have the chance at a power hitting 3B with 6 years of salary control than an average-above average relief pitcher who was entering his arb years. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) And the example got paid $3.2 million, which is less than Downs and slightly more than Belly. If that is expensive, just wait to you see what Hahn is going to have to spend to fix the bullpen. It would be interesting to see what other offers, if any, they had for Reed. It does boggle my mind there is not 100% agreement the trade did not work out for the White Sox. We don't know if it worked out or not. What if Matt Davidson ends up being adequate at 3rd, hits .260ish and hits 25 homers a year? It hasn't worked out so far but it's not like Davidson is dead or something. He has a ton of power. He even displayed a ton of power in a terrible season. If you are willing to write him off already then go right ahead but you shouldn't be surprised if others have not. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) Will he get paid next season any more than the Sox paid Belisario or Downs? For him to be really expensive, he would have to be really good. Not true. Arbitrators overrate the save stat. Reed would have gotten expensive. I have made this point in past threads but it doesn't fit the narrative of those against the trade. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) Do you think Rick will switch things up this year and try to trade a package including several young players to try to fill a big league role? I could absolutely see him doing something like this. Lets look at Pedro Alvarez for example. Some people would not want Pedro Alvarez and I understand the flaws but acquiring him could be a realistic possibility. What would the price be? Sanchez/Semien, 1 of the Sox young pitchers, and a lower level type? More than that? It just depends. The Sox have a glut of infield prospects and I'd actually be surprised if the Sox entered the season with all of them. I would imagine that 1 of Semien/Johnson/Sanchez gets traded this offseason. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 08:07 AM) My impression of the "lower end starter, few bullpen arms, and maybe a hitter" format is that it seems to make sense but it's also the opposite of what Ricky said a few weeks ago. That seems like it barely makes a dent in the ground the white sox need to gain on the rest of the league and does so at a fairly high price. Maybe something changes that on the trade market, but that seems to me like the definition of "Spending money to spend money", which Rick said they were not going to do. Given the choice between that and seeing what guys like Wilkins and other scrap heap finds can do, I would lean strongly towards playing the scrap heap game. It seems likely to produce similar results at a lower cost. I'm thinking they will sign a RHP like McCarthy or Masterson types. They will look to add a couple of relievers. They will try to add a youngish LH power bat for the middle of the lineup and try to find another starting OF. Those are the needs. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 08:10 AM) I know you won't listen, but you give up a closer for a potential 30 homer 3B with six years of control, every.single.day.of.the.week. Great post. Even if Davidson never turns into anything it's still a good trade. -

QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 12:45 PM) Because Wilkins has been awesome right... I know you hated the idea of keeping Paulie around but it is necessary to bash him every chance you get? You want the highest pick possible and you think Paulie is terrible so shouldn't you be happy when he's playing? Yes I suppose I should want him to play at this point. Especially against RHP. -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) The only game I want them to win the rest of the year is Sept. 27th on Paul Konerko day. Hell, I'm GOING to the game on the 26th and I hope they lose. If Paulie plays that day it might be tough to win. -

I want the top 10 pick because I want the highest pick possible. Whether it's protected or not is probably irrelevant. The White Sox won't be signing a free agent with a QO attached even if they get the protected pick. I don't think the franchise is in the position to even give up a 2nd rounder to sign someone and I'd be willing to bet that Rick Hahn agrees. -

QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 17, 2014 -> 07:13 PM) Chicago Bears @ChicagoBears 2h #Bears have signed TE Blake Annen, CB Jordan Sullen & WR Chris Williams to practice squad; still have 1 spot open on active roster. Annen look like the next Fendi-like project. 6'5" TE who runs a 4.41 40. Bears have also brought back CB Demontre Hurst to finalize the 53 man roster. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2014 -> 12:53 PM) I have only seen that they offered $5 million, not $6.5. They had a handshake deal of $6.5 million at draft time. That's $1.5 million under slot and the reason why they took Aiken. Then they did the physical, found the "small ligament" and decided that they'd only offer $5 million. -

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 17, 2014 -> 09:52 AM) The quote from the SI article shows they are speculating and clearly have not seen the medicals so I don't see the point. Everything I've stumbled across only talks about the ligament being undersized and nothing but speculation about the bone itself. Now, if it comes out that the bone is undersized as well then I would be more than willing to pass on Aiken based on Ptatc's response which makes sense with how he explained it. Until more is known, at this point I would still take a chance on Aiken if the price is right. Everyone would. You are talking about a kid that would get upwards of $25-$30 million if he went on the open market right now. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 17, 2014 -> 08:51 AM) If it is just a few sentences, and you include a link to the full article and it's paywall, I think that is fine. So here is the Law writeup on Danish. It's quite surprising. He wasn't a fan at draft time and it definitely seems like he still has reservations though. Can't really argue with the stuff or production at this point though. I think Danish is a top 100 prospect. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/keith-law/...cts-of-the-year Tyler Danish | RHP | Chicago White Sox I don't like Danish's delivery at all -- it's a low-slot, slinging delivery that puts a lot of stress on the arm -- but he can get into the mid-90s and generates a lot of sink (thanks to that arm slot), which, despite his youth, made him among the best starters in two full-season leagues. He was the youngest starter in the high-A Carolina League, where he spent most of the season, and still finished in the top 10 in the league in ERA, walking just 23 men in 91 2/3 innings, with 78 strikeouts. The White Sox have had success with pitchers who have unusual deliveries -- one of whom might win a Cy Young Award this year -- so perhaps they'll defy conventional wisdom again with Danish.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Sep 16, 2014 -> 01:16 PM) http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/keith-law/...op2014prospects Noted Danish critic Keith Law had him in the "other contenders" for Prospect of the Year! I am shocked Mods, am I allowed to post the excerpt about Danish from Keith Law? It's like not even a paragraph.

Bickford is going to The College of Southern Nevada. Eligible for the 2015 draft.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 12, 2014 -> 10:08 AM) 70 power Not an "advanced" hit tool Strong arm Questions about his glove High risk, high reward Oh yeah for sure. I wasn't disagreeing with you. Just came off that way.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 12, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) Reading the description of Tomas it sounded like Dayan Viciedo. Except the fact that Tomas is 5 years older than Viciedo was and he's also 6'4 240 pounds.

I love the idea but it doesn't seem like it will happen. I wish the Sox had a local affiliate. It is a way to steal young fans from the Cubs. When I was a kid there were Sox and Cubs fans in my family. I could've gone either way. The White Sox had Frank Thomas and that made the decision easy for me. If the White Sox start churning out prospects and local kids got to go see a Sox affiliate in Schaumburg or somewhere and identify with the players they could follow them all through the system and into the major leagues.
-
I would expect that the White Sox would be in on Yasmani Tomas. If they did land him, they would need to find LHH from somewhere else though. LH catcher, LH DH, and hopefully Micah Johnson at 2B eventually balances out the lineup. I hope that they are in on Kenta Maeda and I wouldn't rule out a guy like Brandon McCarthy or Justin Masterson.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 12, 2014 -> 07:47 AM) I would put odds down that the Sox don't sign any of those guys anyway. Good point. I would be shocked if the White Sox gave up a 1st or 2nd Round pick. In my opinion, the White Sox will not be signing a free agent with a QO attached. Rick Hahn knows the value of draft picks and the full bonus pool allotment. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 09:21 AM) Britt looked good too. Missouri has a 100% hit rate, everyone is awesome. Nobody sucks, certainly nobody threatens to have a bomb in an airport. +++ Gosox, I agree. Their organization, top to bottom, seems to be 100% on the same page. Reminds me of the spurs how everyone when interviewed hits the same points, talks about how much they love it and how they believe. Certainly doesn't hurt that they also feed them PEDs in their water. Lastly - that TD play to Lockette was totally taken from Auburn's playbook. It's scary how well that worked at the NFL level. That play also shouldn't have been a TD because they had an illegal man downfield. -

Giancarlo Stanton on the White Sox is a pipe dream. Not sure why it keeps getting discussed, especially in the lose for a draft pick thread. -
The White Sox were smart to honor PK on that Saturday Night instead of a 1:00 pm game on Sunday going head to head with the Bears.
