Yanks on Danks
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) Yes, it will. How can it hurt? Remember how we had a ton of money to sign that big 1B this winter? That's what freeing up money does for you, not only this off season, but next. There's no limit to "we should have plenty of money." I guess it depends how much you value Danks, and I don't value him much (and the numbers support that) at 14 mil. And I don't think he's going to get any better (his walk rate going way up this year is alarming, and he's throwing like 86mph, and his FIP is higher). Plus he's soon to be your 4th best lefty starter behind Rodon either next year or at the latest the year after. I'd much rather roll that money into more money to get a big-time starter, catcher, 2b, LF, etc. over the next 2 years. You're also going to need money to extend guys. We have $46M in payroll commitments for next year with Danks. I see no reason why we can't afford a $120M payroll in 2015 if we so choose. That's $74M in available space with only a couple of arbitration eligible players. That's more than enough money to fill all the needs you listed above (2B will be filled internally). Cash flow will not be our problem this coming offseason, finding a way to spend it all efficiently will be, which makes moving Danks less valuable to us. Furthermore, it's not like we have a ton of rotational depth. We're currently starting one guy who was released earlier this year and another guy who made his major league debut at 29 years of age. We basically have nothing behind them at AAA (Beck has proven nothing yet IMO), so things could get ugly until Rodon is ready. I'm not a Danks supporter by any means, but him eating 200 innings with a decent percentage of quality starts has more value to us than his WAR will indicate. I have no problem trading Danks, but salary relief alone won't make us better for 2015. We need something back for him, even if it's a fairly insignificant piece, or else keep him as an over-priced #4 starter for another year. Entering the offseason with three holes in our rotation is not ideal by any means.

Indians trade Masterson to Cardinals
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) Probably not much of a chance they'd make him a qualifying offer anyway. Probably not, but who knows how he pitches down the stretch. His value could change a lot between now and the offseason.

Indians trade Masterson to Cardinals
Random question, but now that Masterson has been traded, the Cardinals can't receive draft compensation if he signs with another team next year correct?

Actual Baseball Trade Rumors From Legitimate Non-Imaginary Sources
QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 06:47 AM) Top 11 picks are safe this year bc the Astros didn't sign Aiken Don't think that is true, pretty sure it's still only the top 10, which means the team with the 10th worst record could lose their pick.

WHITE SOX WINNER!
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 09:39 PM) 33-22 to win 85 games, and hope to get a TON of help. .600 ball. Yeah, probably not. Highly unlikely, but crazier s*** has happened. When is Garcia going to be back? Him in RF, with a De Aza/Viciedo platoon in LF, and hopefully Semien replacing Beckham at 2B gets us back to where we were earlier this year and a much stronger lineup IMO. The rotation and bullpen is another story though.

7/29 Games
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 08:15 PM) It makes a ton of sense to get Beckham off the roster in the next 43 hours. I will be pissed if he's not moved. I truly believe Semien is the better player RIGHT NOW, and giving him two months of major league at-bats should hopefully reduce his growing pains next year. Trading Beckham is a no-brainer IMO.

Gillaspie almost qualified for batting title race
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 07:50 PM) Not now. I'm talking before the regular season started. How about last year when someone posted this:

What happened to Flowers' magical glasses? Don't think they're working tonight.

GAME THREAD 7/29: SOX @ DET
De Aza has a 0.1 WAR right now, I really doubt a BABIP 30 to 40 points below his career average is preventing him from being a 2.5 to 3.0 WAR player. The fact is De Aza was a real nice player when he could play CF. Unfortunately, he's a LF now and his bat is far less valuable there. Going forward he's a platoon OF, which can be useful, but is not the same guy we saw from 2011 to 2013 in his late 20s.

Actual Baseball Trade Rumors From Legitimate Non-Imaginary Sources
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) Why? What value does Gordon Beckham have to anyone? Dunn is a over-paid but productive DH, Beckham is just a bad 2B. Take away money and Dunn is the more valuable player.

Anderson and Rodon top 100 prospects
Ravelo not being in the top 20 is ridiculous and being rated below Barnum is even more so.

Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?
How is it possible that multiple posters with thousands of posts don't realize that sin city is just trolling? He literally does this same act in every thread. I have no idea how the dude hasn't been banned yet.

PM's
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 27, 2014 -> 10:38 AM) If you're sending out a mass PM, I'd like to be included. But if you have to do these individually, then please don't. I'm sure you're busy enough. Yeah, same here.

Only 4 GB of the wild card
Given where we're at, I think Beckham is the only guy we must move. He's simply not very good and we can actually start developing a player for next year without missing a beat. Trade him now for whatever you can (even if you have to eat his entire salary) and call it a win. From there, listen to offers for pretty much anyone not named Sale, Quintana, Abreu, Avi, Conor, or Eaton. However, I think Alexei & Danks are the two we should be pushing hard. If we can get a quality return for either of them, then take the deal and trade minimal players like Dunn & De Aza for whatever you can. If no one is willing to pony up for Danks or Alexei, then I'm not completely against just running with what we have the rest of the way. Sure, it's a long-shot that we'll actually win a wild card spot, but there is some goodwill that could be earned with both fans and players by not doing a fire sale.

7/25 Games
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 26, 2014 -> 06:36 AM) Punk move by Farrell. Richmond sucker punched the Jacksonville manager. http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?con...73&sid=milb Thank you for posting, incredibly entertaining. Love when the Suns manager tosses all the balls onto the field.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 05:31 PM) The more you look at Beckham and what he makes, it would be insane for anyone to give up anything of value for him. He is beyond bad. Career OPS+ of 84 and a current OPS+ of 76. We should just DFA Gordon....we aren't going to get anything for him and the more at bats we give him at this point, with someone like Semien, etc, who at least haven't had the book written on them yet, the better. Someone will take him if we eat some salary, but he won't bring anything significant in return. Honestly, if I were Hahn I'd take on most of his remaining salary and hope for an A ball lottery ticket. We are better off giving Semien or Sanchez the ABs and I personally think Marcus would be an improvement right now. Beckham really needs to go by July 31st.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 12:14 PM) Beckham is bound to rebound at least a little bit. If someone picks him up for nothing and the Sox take on some money, they will get a bargain. Perhaps, but even you would admit Beckham makes zero sense on this team next year right?

2015 MLB Draft
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 05:30 PM) But you'll note, the Tigers weren't in his list as getting compensatory picks. Bad example for this year, but they used to be eligible somehow. Point remains the same.

2015 MLB Draft
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) Frankly, the Cubs too. It doesn't make a lick of sense to me that teams in small markets get these picks as opposed to bad teams. It would be like if the Packers got an extra 3rd round pick every single season (although it would be the tits if the Bills got an extra 3rd every year) It would be nothing like that, because the NFL is a salary cap based league. The financial edge the Cubs & Sox have over these "small market" teams is worth incredibly more than a competitive balance pick every other year. The problem with this system is when a small market owner decides he's going to spend like a big market owner, because then you have the Detroit Tigers.

7-20 Game thread Sox vs Astros
I appreciate Hawk's contributions over the years, but my god is it annoying how much he dominates each broadcast. Stone can barely get a thought in without Hawk interrupting. Time to either force Hawk to retire or find another partner for him, because the current pairing just doesn't work IMO.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 10:57 AM) I think you will have to wait until next year. His downward spiral will probably mean the Sox will wait till the offseason. I don't think he's on our roster come August 1st.

Baseball America White Sox Mid Season Top 10
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 03:49 PM) I'm still surprised that Davidson has fallen so far in everyone's eyes. But these guys are as legit as it gets outside of an actual team, so I'm willing to admit that I'm the crazy one. A 30% K rate as a AAA repeater is going to scare some people. I still love the Reed trade, but even I thought Davidson was a bit overrated when we acquired him. I don't care that he posted a 117 wRC+ at Reno, Adam Eaton posted a 163 wRC+ is his time there and he's basically an average major league hitter. Davidson still has age on his side, and obviously the power potential is legit, but I don't trust guys with significant contact issues at AAA. Hell, Adam Dunn only struck out 20% of the time when he was in AAA. Without significant progress, Davidson's contact issues would only be exploited more at the major league level.
