You said we shouldn’t focus too much on results over the past two seasons. My point is when we considering additions at the trade deadline, you should lean in heavier on recent performance because you have two months to right the ship and get production out of said player.

In regard to who? I don’t think you should be buying projects at the deadline for the most part. That was the point of my post. Jake said it’s dumb to look at past performance when evaluating potential acquisitions and I don’t agree when there are only two moths left in the season. The window to contribute is incredibly short and if “fixes” are required to derive value out of a player then that’s risky. I think Castillo is upgrade over Schultz & Fedde, but how much is the big question. And that comes down to whatever fixes they have in mind. I would have preferred someone with a higher floor (doesn’t require fixes to provide a meaningful upgrade) or a higher ceiling (someone who if fixed can greatly increase your chances in the post season). And for the overall cost I don’t love it, but that’s admittedly more of a 2027 concern. Not sure what part of my opinion you are disagreeing with.

We literally had Derek Hill for this role and traded him becuase we felt covered in CF against LHP with Pereira & Acuna. It’s fine if they no longer feel that way, but I would have pursued a different option than this. I have zero confidence in this guy batting against lefties in a playoff game. Also, it’s not like this guy came free…we gave up two legitimate prospects. I know it’s fun to downplay Adams around here, but he could have used for some other upgrade. Again, I’m hoping they plan to send him to Charlotte and let him work through s%*# before considering him an option for the major league squad. If this is a hedge for Pereira as the platoon CF and not a replacement I’d feel much better.

As I posted elsewhere, I’d feel better if he was sent to AAA. Until I know the plan, I assume most players that contenders add at the deadline and who cost meaningful prospects are intended for the major league roster.

If we raise our payroll by 50% next offseason, Castillo will represent about 1/6 of it in total. Let’s not pretend it’s not a meaningful amount of money.

For Doyle I think yes. Are we giving a dude who hasn’t hit a lick in two years all the CF at-bats against RHP moving forward? This guy has been Romo levels of bad with the bat. Fixing him won’t be easy in a part time role and during a playoff push and could further exaggerate our problems against LHP. Castillo is less of a risk to current year results and just more of a gamble. My point is when fighting for a playoff spot you typically prioritize guys you are confident can help you win and not reclamation projects. I’m more optimistic they can “fix” Castillo to some extent, just don’t think the value equation made a lot of sense and would have preferred someone with a better floor or ceiling.

Yup…it’s hard to process this one without knowing more. Candidly, I’d prefer he go down to AAA and work through adjustments and not be forced onto the major league roster right now. Just hard to imagine trying to fix someone’s swing or approach in a part time role under the pressures of a playoff run makes a lot of sense.

Doyle is 28 and a negative fWAR player right now. And we gave up a DSL prospect to boot.

We traded Hill for scraps to then turn around and give up a legit pitching prospect for this guy? What in the f*** are we doing? How does this make us better short term or long term?

These are all good points. I’d nit pick a few things. I don’t think Dominguez is completely valueless, so I’m not sure that you can view this as getting Castillo for just $13.5M next year. I’d say Dominguez is worth at least $5M as a middle reliever, so let’s call it $18.5M. For one year that’s not terrible I guess, but it still requires a rebound and I still struggle why we gave up a prospect to take on that risk at that cost.

Yeah, I just mean they effectively need to make a call on Hays today if they want to trade him (or Grichuk). Obviously if there is no market, they can wait until the 6th in case someone gets hurt in the Boston series. I think they look to move one of them today though. Not going to get much, but a lot of teams could use a RH platoon or bench bat.

Exactly this. Catcher is happening. I think we get another two between a potential SP, a Hays or Grichuk trade, and some pruning of the bullpen.

I have the over/under on more trades at 2.5 and I’m hammering that over. Sox ain’t close to being done yet.

Post deadline they can trade someone on the IL? And still get someone back in return?
