This is a way too simplistic way of looking at things. Going “all in” at the trade deadline may be foolish, but augmenting your roster with non elite prospects is something any serious GM should be doing to some extent. And in the case of the Dodgers, they traded away a single piece as they had soured on the player and were able to get a nice return. They are also not a good example of anything when they can rock record payrolls that allow them to accumulate significant depth during the offseason.

I think so. I pointed out in the gamethread, but we have literally whiffed on three trades for controllable LH relievers. So far, Booser, Gilbert, & Murphy have combined for -0.6 fWAR and have cost us Fajardo (now the Cardinals’ 11th overall prospect per BA), Combs (a semi interesting relief prospect in AA), and one of my old favorites Ronny Hernandez (who has a 191 wRC+ as a 21 year old catcher in High A). These all felt like Bannister targets and all have failed to various degrees. I wouldn’t expect a 100% success rate on these types of acquisitions, but at least one and ideally two should have worked out. And there are many other red flags, such as Iriarte’s stuff almost immediately regressing when we got him, Oppor completely falling apart, Hagen being an inconsistent mess, and the plethora of injuries we have faced over the past two seasons, but don’t have the time to go into all of those.

To be fair, Emerson was ahead of Lackey coming into the season, so he didn’t really need to “jump him”. And the debate on Emerson vs. Roch has always come down to floor vs. ceiling. Scouts generally consider Emerson to have the higher ceiling and to be a better prospect than Roch was at the same age. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a better prospect, but explains why scouts may like him more than Roch. You also keep screaming about Lackey having the best “production”, but how did he stack against Roch a year ago and against Emerson when he was still in HS?

That’s totally fair. I’m not suggesting we make the trade, just highlighting an interesting theoretical. I will say though if we end up needing a TOR starter and can’t add in free agency (hopefully won’t be the case), the cost for a proven controllable will be immense and more than just Bonemer. All the same risks & concenrs you just mentioned would apply, but with less control of a player like Sloan and for much more financial cost. Again, not saying make the trade, but pointing what the potential alternative might be.

The potential returns for that group will be tempered.” I remain convinced that Gray is the guy to pursue. Eat the rest of his salary and buyout on his mutual option to limit the prospect cost. We should 100% have the money to do this. He may not be perfect, but he’d be a MASSIVE upgrade.

Just thinking through this, but if the 1.01 gets $9.5M we’d save $1.8M. The 5% overage would add another $900k. Right there, you are looking at an extra $2.7M to play with before punting a single top 10 pick. By punting two late top 10 picks, you should be able to pick up another $500k. That’s $3.2M total. Our 2nd through 4th round picks are worth a combined $4.2M. With the savings mentioned above, you are looking at ~$7.5M for those three picks. In simple terms, you could offer someone $3.5M (27th slot value), $2.5M (41st slot value), & $1.5M (62nd slot value). If it’s Thome in the 2nd, I’m not sure he would even require that much, allowing dollars to be repurposed to other picks. Point is, it feels like we should be able to take BPA at 1.01 and still grab three high ceiling prep players in rounds 2 through 4. To me, that should 100% be the playbook for this draft.

Not disagreeing, but what RH pitchers have we traded for? Iriarte has obviously been a disaster, but it’s too early to make any real call on Thorpe given the TJS. Gonzalez & Berroa looked promising before their injuries. Struggling to think who else we traded for that was right-handed.

In Martin’s other bad start as of late, he also was let down by defense and wasn’t able to pitch over it. Instead of assuming he suddenly sucks, maybe he just gets too amped when the defense lets him down.
