It’s not even revisionist theory. It’s simply people who didn’t like Thorpe at the time of the Cease trade grasping at straws to confirm their pre-conceived notions. They love highlighting the last couple major league starts he got beat up (likely while injured) but ignore his extensive track record of minor league success. I can totally get being concerned that Thorpe’s margin of error will be thin because his fastball is a fringe offering, but the immediate need to a write a player over a small sample size (again, while likely injured) is just absurd.

It was like seven fucking starts…you are literally using a SSS to confirm a pre-conceived bias.

Today is literally his first day throwing off a mound since his injury…if anyone should be called Captain Panic it’s you.

The problem for Robert & Moncada is their first contracts were massive and I’m not exactly sure how to think about their extensions impacting their motivation given that factor. Eloy certainly had less to play for once he agreed to his deal and I do believe he is a guy who likely would have benefited from having a carrot dangled in front of his face each & every year. But agree, it’s absolutely critical to consider character when doing these extensions because everyone’s will to win is different and that will have significant implications over time.

Who? Stop speaking in generalizations and show the receipts. Regardless, I’m not sure your obsession with what “insiders” previously told us matters here. Fegan is reporting on specific tangible investments being made right now. This never happened under Hahn and we all could see it. No one is saying everything is fixed right now. We need to see if these investments and other actions (like hiring outside the org) pay off. That will take time. For now, it’s better to see us doing things differently and trying to address the massive cracks in our foundation than do the same old bullshit. No one is suggesting we should start doing cartwheels around the Rate to celebrate our upcoming dynasty, but there is some reason for optimism that maybe the Dark Ages will be behind us soon enough. And until Jerry passes, that is the best we Sox fans can hope for.

How does that work for Bush? Does he get service time while he recovers from his TJS? Also, doesn’t it make a difference if he was on the 26 man (or active) roster vs. the 40 man?
-
Yeah, you’re not going to read the article and there will be no convincing you how blatantly different the actions Getz are implementing are from anything Hahn ever did. The articles about the org under Hahn ripped the Sox for being so behind the time when it came to data and technology. We were in the god damn Stone Age compared to the rest of baseball. And what’s funny is that we all could it see it came to roster design, pre-game planning & preparation, and minor league development. I have no clue what you think people were praising about Hahn. It was widely known we had the smallest analytics group and had to outsource many core capabilities. It’s widely known that we weren’t leveraging key technologies that greatly aid the scouting and player development processes. You can continue to shout and scream “this is all the same” but that doesn’t make it true. The reality is the Sox did very little modernize under Hahn and that’s exactly we have reached rock bottom as an organization.

@Y2Jimmy0 - Did Blake Larson have Tommy John?

Who has declared everything fixed through?

McDaniel/ESPN rank Sox system #2 behind LAD

That’s exactly what I am getting at. I just meant them being pessimistic vs. some of the other publications, but I can understand the rationale. -

He hasn’t played yet and is coming off an injury, so I totally get having some pessimism. Awesome seeing Taylor and to a lesser extent Quero in there. Still a bit bitter Baseball America left Edgar off their Top 100 list after the year he had. -

Braden not in Fangraphs’ Top 100? -
The draft strategy that has been much improved under Shirley? Not sure I’m following your main point here.

Paddy was hired before Hahn was even GM

Do you mind sharing the receipts? Like I outlined in a post a few weeks ago that the core lieutenants in Hahn’s front office were all White Sox lifers and not anything like Getz’s crew. And now, we actually have real evidence of investment in the core under Chris, something I don’t ever recall seeing under Rick. Again, doesn’t mean everything is suddenly fixed, but it’s nice to see tangible actions taking place instead of a bunch of lawyer speak.

I’m down in Nashville with my family right now, but will try to summarize when i have some down time.
-
Who is saying you should lower your standard? But any new GM coming in would have had to go through this part of the process…the point is that an unqualified, insular hire is at least doing some of the right things. I know I was terrified that Getz could have been just more of the same and this is somewhat of a relief to see, but perhaps you were more optimistic on him as GM than I was.
-
No, but it goes into specific technological investments we have made in player development and scouting over the past 12 months. The reason we’re in this disastrous spot today has far less to do with major league payroll allocation and moreso with core structural issues that have prevented us being good at the very basic things that the best mid & small market clubs must be good at to survive. I get that Jerry sucks as owner and he must go to truly become a great franchise, but there is significant transformation possible by just getting with the times and it appears that Getz is making some actual strides in those areas.

Did you read the article?

To be fair, DeJong was brought in to be a cheap placeholder as SS until Colson was ready. Getting anything in return for him was a win. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as well with some of the other placeholders like Maldonado.
-
Did you read the article? This isn’t just about hiring outside people.

Both should get considerable playing time this season. However, given Sosa’s lacking plate discipline, I’m less confident that he will be a good major league hitter. On the other hand, I think Meidroth has the higher floor due to his eye and bat to ball skills. I’d likely give Sosa the Opening Day edge since he is out of options and we need to make a long-term roster decision on him sooner than with Chase, but that window won’t be forever. Chase, Baldwin, Ramos, etc. will all be pushing for opportunities and Sosa needs to show something out of the gate or risk being pushed to a backup infielder spot. Ideally Meidroth is forcing himself into a major league role by May regardless of how Lenyn performs and we have a good problem on our hands.

For those who still don’t believe that Getz is at least trying to make meaningful change, go read the latest Fegan piece over at SoxMachine. Lots of specific tangible actions that have been implemented over the last 12 months that prove he’s actually doing something to bring us out of the dark ages. Like holy s%*#, the Sox were the only club not using the Cloud last year to store their data…like we are talking about unprecedented levels of incompetence. And by no means am I suggesting Getz will work out (I literally just ripped his trade record in another thread), but we are already at the point where his GM speak is backed by legitimate foundational changes whereas Hahn’s lawyer talk was nothing but smoke & mirrors.

They didn’t want to use the term “rebuild” because of what that term implies and the fact the last one literally just failed. Jerry saying he didn’t want to “waste a year” when hiring Getz doesn’t suggest any immediate expectation of winning, but rather an acknowledgment that he’s 88 and time is running out for him. Getz throwing shade at the rest of the AL Central was curios more so due to timing and obviously missed the mark, but the underlining point does hold true if we can eventually right the ship. Beyond the comments you’re citing, people keep forgetting that he also said that he didn’t “like this our team”. GMs are almost never that honest, which should be the most telling of all things the org said last year. Again, it’s very possible Getz is/will be a bad GM, but he’s not completely incompetent to not know how a Fangraphs pre-season W-L forecast works.
