I’m not sure it’s a no-brainer. What they need is somebody to give them 200IP with above average results. That would go a long way to preserving all the young arms, especially in the bullpen. Corbin probably checks that box.

I feel ya. I guess it just seems premature for any amount of downside to me. The evidence says his arm cannot handle a typical workload right now, AND his velocity is down. So all I can conclude at this point is that his arm isn’t ready. Concern of any kind seems a year early, so reporting that “concern is fair” seems inaccurate to me and unnecessarily alarmist. I’m probably reading a negative tone that isn’t intended to be there ??

I think looking at the rebuild as trying to plug all the guys into the lineup 3 years from now is a mistake. You sign Harper or any other good players you can. Say we sign Harper. Think of all the packages of outfield talent we could trade the next few years to fill in gaps at other positions. Where’s Madrigal going to play? Who cares! If he turns out to be a guy forcing his way up trade his ass for somebody else doing the same thing at a position we need.

Totally understand the argument. I’m more of an OBP guy so Harper is the more attractive choice by a long shot for me. Plus LH. As I’ve mentioned, one of the biggest reasons for me is that he is an OFer and not a 3B/SS. Using WAR exclusively isn’t for me but I get why you like it.

Eh. Harper is a threat to win an mvp any given year, Machado isn’t. And yes he’s lefty, and yes he’s a walk machine and power bat. He also helps the rebuild a lot more by being an outfielder. He’s also marketable and not as much of a douchebag

Yep. It’s the smarter play, even before learning Machado was a douche. Signing Harper allows us to use our outfield depth to acquire other assets.

I think it’s important to sign Harper so we have arguably the best corner outfielders for 6-7 years. Let Engel play another year while we wait for Robert or Gonzalez or whoever. The rest of the outfielders we trade for wherever else we end up lacking. Sign Arenado. Burger plays first. World Series 2020
