  1. QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) i will take your word over my memory any day. but wasn't there also a catcher involve from sea? Probably talking about Montero, who is not a catcher any longer and is apparently only able to bat against lefties as a DH. Soooo limited value there.
  2. http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?c...mp;ymd=20140625 Charlotte- Health Birmingham- McCully Winston-Salem- Marin Kannapolis- Dykstra Great Falls- Brennan Kannapolis is already underway and Michalczewski homered, his 6th of the year.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 10:51 AM) If he keeps on hitting, they'll find a spot for him. Also, he's saying he can develop into a power bat. Plenty of guys hit 20 homers a year at 1B, it's not a problem, especially in today's game. Yeah I don't have a problem with him slugging .475ish as long as he keeps his OBP .375-.400. Another thing to consider, Regions Field in Birmingham is traditionally extremely tough on home run hitters. Reference link is below. He hits a lot of doubles that could possibly be homers in Chicago. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=2...b&fext=.jsp
  4. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/chat/cha...=1403635205#new Jordan Gorosh had a chat at BP today and touched a few White Sox prospects. I'll summarize below.... Gorosh wrote that he "really, really likes" Tim Anderson. Which, in my opinion, is just about as close to love as you'll get without adding in another "really." He says that he has strong hands and wrists, plus bat speed, and excellent athleticism. But he is not a believer he will stick at SS. Erik Johnson velocity slipped into the high 80's and slider lost some "bite." Said he is a fan of him becoming a "back end" starter if the velocity returns. Woo. Not a big believer that Rangel Ravelo will develop power. Said that at his "absolutely peak" he is Yonder Alfonso, which this past off-season would of been a huge compliment, but now probably not so much.
  5. Well deserved! Tim Anderson had to be right there with J.P. Crawford as well, but we could only have two reps anyway.

  7. Spencer Adams made his professional debut on June 23rd with the Arizona League White Sox, pitching two innings and striking out two.
  8. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 06:27 PM) So I've been engaging in a stupid and mostly time-wasting argument with a guy on another forum who claims to be a "prospect professional". He has a prospect book on Amazon, so he feels like he is the authority on prospects. Anyway. He is adament that the Sox system is the 29th or 30th farm system in baseball. He isn't quite sure if the Angels farm system is worse. Despite the fact that I told him all the major publications rank the system somewhere between 21-27, he insist Rodon is the only worthwhile prospect, and the only one who is a top 100 prospect. Thinks Courtney Hawkins, Micah Johnson, Tyler Danish and all those guys are pretty much garbage. Just to try and see how ridiculous he is willing to go with this, I compared the Brewers top prospects to the Sox. In case you were wondering, the Brewers are considered the 2nd worst farm system, and of the top 7 prospects or so in the Brewers organization, they are ALL having terrible seasons, except for 1 pitcher they have who is dominating. One particularly interesting opinion he has is that Orlando Arcia is a better SS prospect than Tim Anderson. You could take a bias into evaluate any prospect and come up with any type of result you want. To give you an example I saw recently, Keith Law did a chat before the draft and played devil's advocate with Tyler Kolek, who you should keep in mind, he ranked as the #3 overall player. "Sean (SF) [via mobile] Crazy how many people are caught up in Koleks velocity more than his tools Klaw (1:58 PM) Bingo. If I wanted to crush him, I'd argue that he has below-average command, his slider isn't effective vs LHB because he can't locate it, he doesn't throw his changeup, and he'll have to work to maintain his physical conditioning. If I didn't tell you that he throws 100 mph, wouldn't you ask why the heck that guy was in consideration in the top few picks?" The first few words tells it all, "If I WANTED to crush him..." There has to be a bias present to completely focus on the positives or negatives of a certain player.
  9. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 01:06 PM) Someone tell Rob Young thank you for the recaps but if you are going to write you have to know that " must of " is not proper English. It is often misused for the contraction must've ( short for must have) Very often see the same mistake with would of , could of , and should of. Sorry , see it so often in posts and it's my pet peeve. I edited the post and it is corrected. Thank you for reading and catching the mistake!
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) He still has played 0 minor league games there. Micah Johnson was a butcher at 2B last season, so much so that they was talk of moving him to the outfield. He seems to have cleaned up his defense this year, but he's absolutely not a SS. Marcus Semien or Carlos Sanchez would be be more effective replacement. Sanchez has played 21 games at shortshop this season. Marcus Semien has played 214 minor league games at SS, but only six this year.
  11. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) Do we get to be excited about Kevan Smith yet? Dude is tearing up AA. Also Rangel Ravelo. His OBP is around .400 and he already has a career high in homers this season. I remember Nathaniel Stoltz just gushing about watching him hit bombs in BP, he has the raw power, just taking awhile to develop.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 10:08 AM) The only person who said any day now was Rock. All other indications I've seen point to this taking a while, but there has been very little information available. If you read into what Hahn and Bell have said, they seem pretty resigned to this taking a while, and they are trying to prod him into getting it done faster. Some positives out his holdout is that the White Sox would be limiting his innings this year anyhow and there is still plenty of baseball to be played at the signing deadline. Kris Bryant signed two days before the deadline last year and still played in 36 games and participated in the Arizona Fall League. It's probably better for the Sox to pay a bit more up front and delay his arbitration clock until next year or even the year after, assuming he will be as good as advertised.
  13. http://www.chicagonow.com/future-sox/2014/...ift-kannapolis/ Recap posted. Does anyone know why Nolan Earley missed the first part of the season?
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 04:12 PM) Apparently it's a broken hand for Lawrie and he'll be out a month. Fire up the trade rumor train, the express from Chicago to Toronto is now open.
  15. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 06:23 AM) who exits when/if rienzo moves to pen? engel and basto both played in arizona? jaye got rocked again. I had high hopes for Jaye coming into the season but he's moving closer to becoming a non-prospect for me.
  16. I attended a Frontier League game tonight and Blair Walters started for the Joliet Slammers. Pitched into the 9th too, lost it on a walk off.
  17. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 09:38 PM) I'm discovering that info out of the Arizona League is somewhat slow. The team doesn't have a twitter account or personalized website like the other affiliates. It's the old school milb.com layout. The box scores seem to be slow in updating as well. Hmpf Looking forward to that next week for the recaps!
  18. Francellis Montas, RHP Born 3/21/1993 6'2'', 185 Throws: R Bats: R OVERVIEW/SCOUTING REPORT Francellis "Frank" Montas has good height and a sturdy frame. His raw arm strength is exceptional, which allows him to pump his fastball into the mid to upper 90's consistently. Montas has excellent arm speed from an overhand delivery, creating a potential plus plus fastball. Of his secondary offerings, his slider has jumped to the forefront, it sits between 84-88 MPH and has significant bite, grading it close to plus. Montas also throws a change-up between 85-86 MPH. He doesn't have a great feel for it, but he has refined it enough to at least be a show-me pitch, which considering his plus fastball-slider combo, may be enough to be effective. SIGN/DRAFT Montas was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent on December 14th, 2009. He was then acquired by the White Sox in exchange for Jake Peavy on July 3rd, 2013. MINORS After putting up some terrible numbers in his first two years in the Dominican Summer League, he finally broke through in 2012 in Rookie Ball state side, posting a 3.65 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 44.1 innings pitched. In 2013 he was promoted to Low-A and the strikeouts increased but so did he ERA. Between Low-A Greenville and Low-A Kannapolis, Montas had a 5.43 ERA with 127 strikeouts over 111 innings pitched. However, after missing the first month of 2014 due to torn meniscus, began the season in High-A ball with Winston-Salem and dominated, posting a 1.76 ERA with 49 strikeouts over 51 innings pitched. Something obviously clicked from 2013 to 2014 and the White Sox are hoping it is here to stay. 19. Omar Narvaez, C Born 2/10/1992 5'10'', 175 Bats: S Throws: R OVERVIEW/SCOUTING INFO Narvaez is a good defensive catcher with a strong arm that can shut down an opposing team's running game. He has thrown out 49% of attempted base stealers across his minor league career. Offensively, Naraez is a switch hitter, though he is much stronger from the left side. He is excellent at making contact, owning a extremely low 9% strikeout rate over his career. Naraez has not displayed much power, only homering four times in 261 professional games. SIGN/DRAFT Narvaez was signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela by the Tampa Bay Rays on July 4th, 2008. He was acquired by the Sox in AAA portion of the 2013 Rule V draft. MINORS Narvaez was 16 years old when he was signed, so the Rays were very slow with his development, having him repeat different versions of their Rookie ball until 2013. In 2013 he was assigned to low-A Hudson Valley, where he split catching duties and appeared in 39 games, slashing .267/.311/.333. After the White Sox drafted him the Rule V draft, he was assigned to Low-A Kannapolis, where he hit similarly, posting a .291/.331/.315. line. He was then promoted to High-A Winston-Salem where he homered twice in his debut. STATS/REFERENCES http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=narvae001--- http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?s...&pid=553882 http://rayscoloredglasses.com/2013/12/12/r...e-omar-narvaez/
  20. Spencer Adams, RHP Born 04/13/1996 6’5", 190 Throws: R Bats: R OVERVIEW/SCOUTING INFO Spencer Adams is an elite athlete with a tall and projectable frame. He could easily stand to add muscle, but at 18 he still has time to grow. He throws from a three-quarter arm slot with some deception, repeats his motion well, and has good raw arm strength. Adams throws a fastball, slider, change-up and has flashed a curve. This spring he touched 94-95 in early innings on his fastball, holding low 90's late into games. His slider is a legitimate out pitch, with tight spin and break, usually comes in between 83-86. His change-up is his weakest off-speed pitch, but he has shown some feel for it, and scouts believe with proper coaching it could evolve to an average offering. SCHOOL NOTES Adams was a three sport star (baseball, basketball, and football) at White Country High School in Cleveland, Georgia. His Junior year he worked primarily in the upper 80's and had good but not spectacular numbers. However, his Senior year the velocity spiked in the 90's and he dominated, posting a 0.72 ERA with 90 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. SIGN/DRAFT The White Sox selected Spencer Adams with the 44th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He was ranked as the 24th best prospect by Baseball America and 27th best by MLB.com. Considered to be a tough sign, Adams signed at slot value which was officially announced on June 11th, 2014. MINORS Adams has been assigned to the Arizona League Rookie team but has at the time of this post has not pitched yet. STATS/REFERENCES MiLB Page
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) FYI, the Adopt-A-Prospect forum has been cleaned up and updated. All 2014 Draft Picks other than Jake Peter remain available, along with some other intriguing prospects. Go in there and take one or two! If you have one or a few, update 'em! What's the responsibility of adopting a prospect out of curiosity?
  22. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) He is trying to get every penny he can. The thing most people aren't looking at is what if he sucks as an MLB pitcher? Starting his clock early makes no difference if he is no good. You get all the money you can because you don't know how you will be later. This needs to be the mind set right now. It's a small gamble now (difference of maybe a couple hundred thousand) that could impact millions of dollars for him later. He could be a ineffective sure, but it's basically betting on yourself and he seems like a confident kid. The big money for him is going to earned in the majors.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 09:03 AM) Appel and Rodon are not the same. One factor people aren't mentioning here is, Rodon was taken #3 overall. That means, to have it make sense to not sign and go next year, you have to take everything into account risk-wise, with the only possible reward to occur if he goes #2 or #1 next year. Think about how much risk there is, for a reward that is very unlikely to occur (being the #1 or #2 pick)... and as a senior that year he'd have nearly zero leverage and probably have to sign below slot anyway, thus reducing or eliminating that reward if it were to even occur. Rodon turning down slot would be an epic failure on his part. I agree, which disappoints me that he didn't sign for slot quickly and include a spot on the 40 man roster or something. At least that way Boras could spin it that he did something for the guy. With the longer he hold outs, in my mind the less likely he signs for slot because what the hell was he waiting for then?
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 08:41 AM) Because there's no point in simply releasing a guy. Even through all of his struggles, I've never heard anything bad about him and he's seemingly been nothing but a class act. Until the need the roster space, they are going to hang on to him. And you just compared Justin Jirschele to Wade Boggs. Yeah. I've seen quite a few pictures of him spending time with younger players. He may never make the show, but if he can be a positive influence (and a cautionary tale) for the real prospects, I'm all for it.
