  1. Don't know why this guy doesn't get morre attention. All he does is get people out.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 03:57 PM) If Robin had to use Stewart for a significant stretch yesterday after 14, someone, probably Stewart, would have been sent down to Charlotte. That would be okay. I have two points here. 1) The game was winable if they get Santiago out of there before hit # 5. Leaving him in there for the duration was tantamount to giving up when tied. 2) Managers are copycats, and they often will leave the closer in there in situations like this, as I mentioned in my earlier post. It happened again today in Mets/Marlins game. Marlins are up 2-1, Ozzie brings in closer Heath Bell, who, like Santiago, has been ineffective lately and should have been on short leash. He gives up 4 straight walks, game tied, and he has thrown 40 some pitches. Why leave him in? So Ozzie goes by the 2012 book on how to mishandle the bullpen, and Bell gives up the winning hit.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 12:04 PM) It was the 14th inning and they had blown through most of the pen already. That game belonged to the closer, no matter who it was out of necessity. Crain? Stewart? They could have pitched. After the long home run, he gave up two more hits, and it was still tied. What if Santiago went in with a four run lead, are you going to leave him in until he gives up five? Play to win the game. Plus, Oakland had already used their two best bullpen guys. I would take my chances going into the 15th all tied up. Don't get me wrong, I still like Ventura.
  4. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 09:08 AM) Remind me why Hector was chosen to close? Ventura says he will stick with him fine, but it doesn't seem to just give up one hit or one bomb when he scuffles he gives up several of them or at least several hits. He is young and he and Reed don't have anything as far as experence over on the other and Reed seems good right now. And am I wrong in thinkig we haven't seen much of that fab screwball Santiago has? Looks like a lot of fastballs usually. As much as I like Robin, a lot of the blame goes to him. He puts Santiago in there, and he gives up five hits, won't take him out no matter what. Lots of managers are doing that now, they prob don't want to hurt the closer's feelings, etc. Since Santiago wasn't exactly lights out in previous games, he should have been on a short leash, especially after the game tying home run.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) How could that be? Wtf are they doing using a different ball? Must be cheaper... Japanese league has had higher seams for years.
  6. Ravelo just turned 20 this week.
  7. It's easy to second guess Robin on this one. I mean, Santiago gives up 5 hits in the inning. Managers often don't like to take out the closer, even if he's getting hammered. Do or die syndrome. Cannot hurt the closer's feelings, so you leave him in there.
  8. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 25, 2012 -> 01:19 AM) Brady Shoemaker making some noise down in WS. Yes. Sox have to do something with him, or he'll get picked up next offseason by someone.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 16, 2012 -> 05:07 PM) It was a minor league deal. What didn't make any sense about it? waste of time, energy, money, good food.
  10. Ventura makes a difference, no doubt. Sometimes, you watch so many games for so long you forget how much a manager can add. Hope I'm saying this in 5 months.
  11. QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 11:08 AM) dear god Viciedo that was pathetic I didn't know he was that bad in LF. Can't play him every day if that is typical. Even Dunn would have caught that one.
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 10:00 PM) Kuhn is just a hitting machine. Better than Beckham.
  13. Ex-Sox pitcher Lucas Harrell had a great game Sunday vs Rockettes. 7 innings, 3 hits, no runs.
  14. I don't understand why Brandon Kloess is still at B'ham. He pitched great last year, including an end of year stint at Charlotte. He desrvews a promo to AAA.
  15. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 06:47 AM) I was at his 8 2/3 perfect game-and that ball was foul Really? Never heard that. I listened to the game on radio, still remember it well. Ed Fitzgerald got the hit, then Pierce struck out Albie Pearson to end the game.
  16. We got Pierce in a trade with Tigers in 1949. We gave up a catcher named Aaron Robinson. Pierce weighed about 160 then and had a great fast ball. Al Lopez never pitched him in the 1959 World Series; that always miffed Pierce, but he got a chance in 1962 for the Giants in World Series and did well. Never understood Lopez, especially since he started Early Wynn in Game 6 on 2 days rest, and the Dodgers hit him hard. Series over. I met Wynn in the 1980's and mentioned that; he didn't get it either.
  17. I noticed he is still on the Great Falls roster. Why would he not be promoted? Does anyone have any info on how he has performed this spring?
  18. Luke Appling.....The guy could hit.
  19. I like Hawk. Being a 'homer' is expected, however, if a home team player screws up, it should be noted. The announcers in Colorado are homers, much worse than Hawk. When Tulo gets thrown out at third by 10-20 feet stretching a double into a triple with no outs, the announcers here admire Tulo for his hustle. Maybe they are not allowed to criticize players.
  20. QUOTE (daa84 @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 08:24 AM) stone is ok, but he has 2 main problems. 1) he talks wayyy too much. You don't need to analyze every little thing that goes in the game. and 2) 90% of the stuff he decides to analyze, is like baseball 101. Now I know most that post on soxtalk have a baseball IQ above that of the average fan, so doesn't it seem to you guys like Stone is trying to teach baseball to a 2nd grader? I love Hawk. I am the complete opposite of almost every fan when it comes to announcers though. I loved Joe Morgan. Basically, I love old ball players who tell stories. Thats the type of stuff you can only really learn from those guys. I know everyone makes fun of Morgan for his "Al Oliver comment," but you know what? As dumb of a comment as it might have been (and it was dumb) if he hadn't said it, I probably wouldn't know who Al oliver is. Same thing with Hawk. Now of course I would know who Yaz is without hawk, but im not sure I'd know much about Tony conigliaro, or bert campernaris if it wasnt for hawk What was the Oliver comment?
  21. Spring Training hasn't even started, and SI is giving credit to Walker for helping adjusst the swing of Braves' Jason Heyward.
