  1. Call this a partisan comment, but I'm a bit annoyed by the attack line used against Alexei for Senate. He lost $150 million in the College Savings Fund. If you look closely at the reference date for that comment, its from January 2009. Right after the DOW took a huge tumble. Anyone else want to tell me what other funds didn't lose money from 2007-2009. Probably every single one of them. I just don't know why Alexei doesn't post a response showing that the fund has regained all (if not more than all) of it's losses in the past 14 months as the DOW has moved up 40%.
  2. Quinn/Gianoulius I wonder how much 3rd party candidates will take in the Governor's race. I have a gut feeling that 44-45% will be enough to win it. Shoot last time, Whitney got 10% of the vote with Blago/Topenka. I could easily see this going 44% Brady-42% Quinn-11% Whitney-3% Other I think Alexi takes the Senate race by 3%.
  3. i've been trying to pick every football game this yr with the spreads. not so good so far... 39-43-7

  5. does anyone know the answer to this question. If I bet, $10 at a sportsbook in Vegas, with or without the points, I know that the payout is even money, minus the juice. What is the juice? For some reason 9% sticks in my mind.. meaning that if I bet $10 and won (again w or w/o points), I'd collect $19.10. Is that correct?
  6. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 04:14 PM) I thought this too at first, but when you consider that the 2004 team did something that had never been accomplished in the entire history of the sport (coming back from 0-3 in the playoffs), it does make it more justified, especially in light of their drought and the fact that it happend against the Yankees. In fairness, I don't think Burns mentioned their second championship at all. im sure this is part of it... but he definitely spent a lot of time talking about Northeasterner's going to relatives graves with news that Boston won the world series after the drought. Shoot our drought was greater than theirs!!!
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 07:24 PM) White Sox won last night when I started the game thread. If they go on a losing streak now and somehow don't make the playoffs, its all your fault!!!! Pierre LF Vizquel 2B Quentin RF Pierzynski C A. Ramirez SS Teahen DH Kotsay 1B Morel 3B De Aza CF Garcia P wow. that lineup makes me want to vomit.
  8. Do you think the Sox (or any other team for that matter) would consider selling hot dogs/beer for more on these games too? What about parking?
  9. the article didn't go into too much detail, but they did reference the airline concept. do you think that if there are 500 speciality priced tickets for a Buehrle vs Sabathia matchup, when the quantity is reduced to say 50 left, prices start to go up?

    Taxes

Interesting story. http://www.tax.com/taxcom/taxblog.nsf/Perm...Z9?OpenDocument Does anyone know how this tidbit is possible? In 2008 nearly 1 in every 200 high-income taxpayers paid no federal income tax, up from about 1 in 1,500 in 1998. I don't get it. Especially with the AMT in place. Is it tax credits, not deductions that are eliminating paying any level of income tax?
  12. i want the Twins to get all the way to the World Series and lose Game 7. And Lose Game 7, because they didn't have home field advantage in large part to the gopher ball that Matt Thornton threw in the All Star Game
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 07:51 PM) Have you noted what the cost of an actual insurance policy for a child in the individual market? You're talking about several thousand dollars, maybe over 10k if the child is in a high risk group. The cost of those shots would pale in comparison to the several thousand dollars you could pocket. Not sure if its the same thing or not, but adding a child to my individual plan at BCBS was going to cost $1,700 per year. My plan costs $2,400 per year including Dental.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 04:19 PM) If you were an actually-small business owner or otherwise self-employed, or you didn't have health insurance through your employer, you would probably want coverage for your child even if you couldn't afford a whole family plan. These child-only plans would typically have a ton of loopholes to deny care for even routine items and of course for any "pre-existing condition". Now, instead of offering these plans without being able to deny for pre-existing conditions, a lot of companies are simply not offering these plans. So it's whole family or nothing. interesting. my wife has group insurance with BCBS. I have a indiv policy with them too. We called to do an analysis of which policy was better for the baby. Even though her policy will cost more to add the baby, then me to add the baby, we chose hers. The big issue was that I don't have maternity coverage with mine, so there would be this cluster of bills/charges immediately after birth bouncing back and forth between policies. So the plan is, to keep the baby on my wife's until next year, (enrollment period) and then add her to mine to save the $.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 23, 2010 -> 03:07 PM) This is going to bankrupt and ruin the best healthcare system in the world! And in response to #1, a lot of insurance companies are simply dropping the child-only plans. Why, again, should we stick with a for-profit model for insurance? with a child on the way, I was curious about this. So people will go out there and find a different insurance company just for their child? So for example, they would be on Aetna and the child would be on Blue Cross Blue Shield?
  16. anyone take issue with any of these? if so, which ones and why? Setting aside the question of the long-term impact of the new law, Surge Desk outlines the list of the initial changes that will go into effect on Thursday. 1. Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny children coverage for pre-existing conditions. 2. Children of parents with insurance will be allowed to remain covered under those policies until the age of 26. 3. Insurance companies will be forbidden from terminating coverage for any other reason than customer fraud. 4. Insurance companies will no longer be able to cap the amount of benefits and treatment a person can receive in a lifetime. 5. Insurers can no longer charge customers for preventive services like mammograms and colonoscopies. 6. High-risk pools are mandated to cover those who have been denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions.
  17. San Fernando Valley, CA. I'd push for random house inspections. The Valley became the pioneering region for producing adult films in the 1970s and since then has been home to a multi-billion dollar pornography industry, earning the monikers "Porn Valley", "San Pornando Valley," or "Silicone Valley" - a play on Silicon Valley with Silicone breast implants. The leading trade paper for the industry, AVN Magazine, is based in the Northwest Valley, as are a majority of the nation's adult video and magazine distributors.[citation needed] According to the HBO series Porn Valley, nearly 90% of all legally distributed pornographic films made in the United States are either filmed in or produced by studios based in the San Fernando Valley.
  18. The UFW launched its national “Take Our Jobs” campaign on June 24, inviting U.S. citizens and legal residents to replace hundreds of thousands of immigrant field laborers, most of whom are undocumented. Since then, more than 3 million people have visited the campaign website, www.takeourjobs.org. Of those visitors, 8,600 have expressed an interest in seeking employment as farmworkers. Despite the numbers, only seven people have taken the UFW up on its offer to take a job in agriculture.
  19. out of curiousity, what makes a good hitting coach? What's the pre-requisite? (spelling?) What qualifications should one have?
  20. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) More likely it appears that Harrell is already pitching for Garcia, and it appears Lucas Harrell is not capable of starting 40% of our games. I'd rather have Carlos Torres out there myself.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 07:50 PM) So you'll still buy tickets if we go 11 seasons between playoff appearances while we build ourselves like the Twins did? kind of like between 1983-1993... sure. Or 1993-2000.
  22. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) I think that's sort of the point, they're built for 85-90 wins in an average year, which usually isn't going to win the division by itself. There aren't too many teams in baseball that can have an average year and still expect to make the playoffs (the Yankees are probably about it). I'm not sure how you change that, other than being willing to throw another $20 million or more on the payroll each year. the same way the Twins do it.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 04:06 PM) One hole in that... What it takes to win a division is based on who finished second. If the second place team won 85 games, it only took 86 games to actually win the division. good point. the only other thing is the wild card. you increase your chances dramatically of playoff baseball if you don't take the 2nd place team + 1 win goal. to me, that's like a college kid saying.. "I just need a 68% on the final to pass the course so im not going to try real hard."
  24. here's what i don't like. While Williams would protest that the team's goal every year is to win the World Series and that anything else is a failure, in truth they're annually built to win 85 to 90 games, with the understanding that with some good fortune they might win 95 and a pennant, and that with a few injuries or off years they might slip below .500. 2010- Twins on pace for 97 wins 2009- Twins 87 wins 2008- Sox 89 wins 2007- Indians 96 wins 2006- Twins 96 wins 2005- Sox 99 wins 2004- Twins 92 wins 2003- Twins 90 wins 2002- Twins 94 wins 2001- Indians 91 wins 2000- Sox 95 wins So if that truly is the goal, we are undershooting what it takes to win a division. 85-90 win seasons won the division 3 out of the past 11 seasons. The average win total it took to take the Central was 93.27 wins. If you take 85-90 and cut it down the middle, to say 88 wins.. that would have won the division only 1 time!!!
