  1. Because Getz overplayed his hand and was asking for too much initially. They've been trying to move him for 2 offseason now. Perhaps he anticipated being able to pick up some salary to increase the return package. Mune's signing certainly threw a wrench into the Sox offseason/payroll expectations. We also don't know for sure what the Mets offer was early in the offseason. With Belly finally back with the Yankees, it seems to me the Mets needed to act immediately to secure an OF. This Sox team was never going to be all that great with or without Robert. He was ultimately a sunk cost that wasn't going to be around for the next time the Sox would be good again. Hopefully Getz can use that money to add a few other pieces and they are able to develop some of these former top prospects into something useful.
  2. Do you know who the owner is?
  3. His stuff is pretty electric when you look into it. He won't be anywhere near prospect rankings, but the fastball and sweeper have some ridiculous movement on them. They just need to teach him how to use them. He certainly is at least what you call an 'interesting' flyer.
  4. This. Would you rather have Murakami or Robert? I think the answer is pretty easy. I wanted Robert gone, and I never expected anything of value in return. Hopefully Getz can utilize some of that $20M to make an addition or two. I won't miss Robert's grimacing face every time he hits the 1B bag running out a grounder.
  5. Same, I wouldn't be unhappy at all if the Sox added him. I have to think though most of these guys want to be on a contender.
  6. There certainly feels like there are a lot more guys this year without homes right now. Just the SP market alone you have Valdez, Gallen, Giolito, Littell, Bassitt, Verlander, Scherzer, Paddack, Gonsolin - granted, most of these names aren't 'stars' but they should likely be a part of some team's rotation.
  7. Wish I would have been able to see him pitch. My dad always raved about his knuckleball and how he pitched both games of a double header. We were lucky enough to get to shake his hand at an autograph signing years ago.
  8. Miller is still only 26 and a former 1st round pick. He'll be a little harder to acquire just based on the pedigree, but I wouldn't be opposed to the Sox giving him a look. Putting him in the BP alongside Taylor could be electric.
  9. About time the started adding some NRI deals. I'd guess Newcomb is a SP, so there's Borucki, Hudson, Gilbert, Eisert, & Murphy in competition for 2/3 spots for lefty relievers.
  10. Outside of creating some good faith for dealing with Boras, I don't really see the value of forcing him into the lineup. Even if you gave him a 1 yr deal and let him man an OF spot for two months until Montgomery is ready, his stats look like he's toast on the surface.
  11. He's not worth it when he only plays 3/4 of every season. If you can't stay on the field, your talent is useless.
  12. Getz better pick up the phone and call the Mets. Layoff the ridiculous asking price and make a deal.
  13. He has, and that's what I'm trying to get at - if Benny sees increased time at DH, that automatically gives both Teel/Quero less time together in the same lineup.
  14. I'd play both, but I don't think it's a slam dunk will see both in the lineup on a regular basis. If they think that freeing up the third catcher spot to another position player makes more sense for their roster flexibility, I think they will do so. I think that's also why we've heard so many rumors about them shopping Quero - because they realize the excessive value they have behind the plate, and wanted to see if they could pivot that value to another position of need instead of possibly wasting it on the bench.
  15. I think that's we differ - I don't really see Benny being the everyday LF. He just seems too broken and frankly too atrocious out there. I would assume it's increasingly likely we don't see Teel and Q both playing at the same time like we did at the end of last season. Venable doesn't seem to like having both of them in the lineup, and Romo (+ his option flexibility) really makes Lee expendable now. If we assume that ends up being the case, then they won't be carrying three catchers, and you gain another bench spot. You can get a lot of playing time for all those guys you mentioned if you have a rotating DH spot. I don't think this is that crazy to see as an opening day setup: LF - Baldwin/Kelenic/Periera CF - Robert RF - Kelenic/Periera (this works as a platoon) DH - Benintendi BN - Hill (defensive replacement and pinch runner in late in close games + Robert's eventual replacement when he inevitably gets hurt again)
  16. I believe he was. It's not the first time the Sox have a fringe guy on a NRI make the team. Jesse Chavez is another guy that comes to mind. He was a NRI, imploded in ST, and the Sox clearly cut him because you couldn't justify having him make the team and he didn't want to go to the minors (supposedly he even contemplated retirement). He signs with Atlanta, and gets his contract purchased before opening day and appears in 46 games for them (and was good).
  17. I don't they are necessarily assured a starting gig, but I do believe teams sign guys to NRI's with handshake agreements they have a higher chance to make the team in order to not disrupt or make any rash decisions regarding the 40-Man roster before heading into ST. It just seems like Kelenic has a great shot at making the team, they obviously really like his potential, and there are glaring holes in the OF. Baldwin is literally his only competition and he is most definitely not a RF. Montgomery is in the wings, but there is literally no reason to hand him the job or rush him to the majors after only 125 AB's in Birmingham.
  18. Well, for one, when's the last time a team had a Zoom call with a NRI?
  19. Red Sox finally sign someone from the FA market. They've done a good job assembling a ton of rotation depth this season. Crochet, Suarez, Gray are a great 1-3, bumped Bello all the way down to 4, Oviedo has a lot of breakout potential, and then you have Tolle and Early waiting in the wings.
  20. Certainly feels like he has a high likelihood to make the team baring a catastrophic ST performance.
  21. Yep, guys like this aren't the sexy name by any means but teams obviously see value in keeping them rostered. Third team Dean's been apart of this offseason. They just need to be played correctly and not relied on as a starter.
  22. A sub .200 hitter with a 30% K-rate is the last thing the Sox need in LF. Lee's value is his defense behind the plate - moving him off that makes him completely worthless.
  23. Oh totally. Lee has very little if any trade value.
  24. I think this signals they aren't planning on carrying Teel, Quero, and Lee on the major league roster. Romo is a very good fielder and gives them some catching depth if they lose Lee when they eventually try to sneak him through waivers. Not a bad move by any means, especially if they can get him to hit.
