QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 15, 2015 -> 01:20 PM) Sox record is 3½ games better than Oakland, but Sox have a -35 run differential and Oakland has +1. Oakland's team OPS is 30 points better than the Sox (while playing in a very hitter-unfriendly home stadium), Oakland's starter ERA is 1.34 points better than the Sox. Only edge Sox have is a 1.32 point edge in reliever ERA. Yea, the A's aren't nearly as bad as their record indicates. Their 1-11 record in one run games is what makes them appear to be so bad.

QUOTE (LDF @ May 15, 2015 -> 12:18 PM) you are taking 1 little snippet and embellishing it to make a point. pls reread the whole statement. jeez i would have thought i wouldn't need to explain something so simple. The whole point it appears you are trying to make is that the manager should make personal decisions and that is absolutely not the case for any team in baseball. The GM makes a roster, it is the manager's job to best utilize that roster. If the GM does not like the way a manager is utilizing his resources then the manager needs to shape up or ship out. -

QUOTE (LDF @ May 15, 2015 -> 12:12 PM) and therein lies the problem. many will not accept those parameters that the org FO establish as a requirement for the job. does anyone think many teams, outside the sox, have those prerequisite requirement for any employment agreement. to have the FO run the team on the field and the manager to relay the orders or ideas. this is a ridiculous thought, and i am not trying to belittle anyone, but why have a manager??? just install a speaker with a direct line to the FO. I don't understand your confusion. Do you really think that the manager makes the call on who is called up or sent down and not the GM? If so, that's ridiculous. Sure the manager can give his input but it is not his call. And yes that applies to every team in the Major Leagues no matter who the manager is. -
The next 15 games are against OAK, CLE, MIN, TOR and BAL who have combined for a 76-96 record thus far. If the Sox are going to make a run to get back in this thing, now is a good time to do so. 9-6 gets them back to .500, but let's hope for a nice 11-4 or 12-3 stretch.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 14, 2015 -> 11:04 AM) -No hard cap on Rodon's innings. -Will be skipped at times. This is the right way to do it in my opinion. I really think the Nationals screwed themselves out of a shot at winning the World Series by their handling of Strasburg in 2012. I realize it's not the exact same scenario as he was coming off Tommy John surgery but they could have cut out some starts at the beginning and middle of the season so that he could have pitched in September and October. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but that's the way I feel about it.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ May 11, 2015 -> 07:04 PM) Random beer topic: If you could only drink products from one brewery for the rest of your life, which one would it be? Assume that you have unlimited access to any/all of their beers that are still being produced and that you can acquire any beer for macro-brew prices. I think if I had to choose one it would probably be Samuel Smith's. Their Organic Chocolate Stout is probably my favorite beer and I also really like their Taddy Porter, Nut Brown Ale and Oatmeal Stout. Their beer is also rather expensive so getting it at macro prices would be nice. If I were to choose a local brewery, the loyal Wisconsinite in me would choose New Glarus.

QUOTE (shysocks @ May 13, 2015 -> 09:53 AM) The Blackhawks are essentially a dynasty at this point and their attendance mirrors what Sox figures would look like if they had two trophies in five years and playoff berths every year surrounding. That's all I'm saying and you know it's true. I think comparing hockey/basketball attendance to baseball is like apples and oranges. It's a hell of a lot easier to fill a 20,000 seat arena for 41 games than it easy to fill a 40,000+ stadium for 81 games. Would the Sox sell out nearly every game if the stadium held 20,000 and the schedule was cut in half? My guess would be yes. Not to mention the fact the baseball is played outdoors for the most part and the poor April and May weather combined with hot summers definitely keeps a lot of people away.

QUOTE (flavum @ May 6, 2015 -> 07:42 PM) Buehrle 5 innings, 1 run. Came out after 77 pitches. Buehrle describes the reports of his ailments as "horses*** reporting". Says he will only need to go on the DL if he goes out and gets hit by a car walking across the street. http://news.nationalpost.com/sports/mlb/to...of-the-ordinary

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 6, 2015 -> 09:22 AM) So starting Rodon on Sunday put the White Sox in good shape still over the next week. 5/6 Sale vs Detroit 5/7 Quintana vs Detroit 5/8 Noesi vs Cincinnati 5/9 Danks vs Cincinnati 5/10 Rodon vs Cincinnati 5/11 Samardzija vs Milwaukee 5/12 Sale vs Milwaukee You could do this with Samardzija and Sale both serving their suspensions. Hopefully, Sale drops his appeal after tonight's start. You could even keep Rodon in the rotation and make Noesi the long man going forward. I think they should be able to keep Rodon in the rotation. At this point in the season, every starter has roughly 27 starts left. I think they will use off days, the all star break or an occasional start by Noesi or Carroll to keep him closer to 23 or 24 starts. If he averages 6 innings per start, 24 starts would put him at 160 innings combined between the minors and majors this year and that seems to be about where they should want him to be. If the Sox do manage to make the playoffs they really don't need a 4th starter with a front three of Sale, Samardzija and Quintana.

I think Flowers gets a little too much hate around here and AJ maybe a little bit too much love by certain posters. I'm not going to say that Flowers is as good as AJ was/is, but Flowers had a 1.6 fWAR last year. AJ's average in his 8 years with the Sox was also 1.6 and that's pretty heavily skewed by his 3.5 fWAR season in 2012 where he somehow hit 27 homers. His average fWAR in his other 7 seasons was 1.3.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:21 PM) This is game is going to be really cool. Hearing all the pure sounds of baseball and the personalities of the players too. I hope Samardzija drops an F bomb after losing his shutout in the 9th. My question is are they still going to play the players walk up music and announce the batters and things like that? I could see some players wanting them to just so they don't get out of their routine.
-
No thanks. If Flowers fails, I'd feel better about Soto starting than I would Saltalamacchia at this point.

If you just look at the 5 guys at the back of the bullpen that are the ones who will be pitching in close games (Robertson, Jennings, Duke, Putnam, Petricka), their numbers are pretty phenomenal. Every team is going to have a garbage time reliever that is going to skew the numbers so I think it's safe to ignore them for the sake of deciding just how good a bullpen is. Just looking at those 5 guys they have a 2.52 ERA, 1.99 FIP, 1.066 WHIP, 11.36 K/9, 3.46 K/BB That is really about as good as you could realistically expect and they could be even better depending on what Rodon is going to be able to give you.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 24, 2015 -> 11:34 AM) I don't think batters should be granted time outs, and there should be more urgency to pitch. But Pitchers should have more leeway due to base runners and other field items that they have to control that the batters don't. I disagree. The pitcher versus the batter is like a chess match. If you're going to grant the pitcher basically all the time in the world to deliver his pitch, you should allow the batter to do the same.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 24, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) first, i can understand the quick pitch and all, but come on, when the hitter steps into the box, they are ready. if players don't like that, then get a running clock. the batters has every right to take their time by stepping in and out of the box. second, if Eaton did complain, i think i would say the same thing, but not as animated. MLB has decided that the batters don't have the right to step out of the box and must keep one foot in at all times. New rule.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 21, 2015 -> 06:35 PM) http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/i...four-al-central Dave Schoenfeld picks Franchise Four for the AL Central teams. Amazing Miggy Cabrera still isn't on the Tigers' list, but they have a long history...plus his time with the Marlins. And Walter Johnson seems so weird with all the modern-day Twins' names...Johan Santana didn't quite make the cut either, or Joe Mauer. For Sox, it's Thomas, Appling, Baines and Fox (over Aparicio)....Collins didn't have enough time with Chicago, more closely connected with the Philadephia A's. Didn't realize Faber and Lyons were so high on the career WAR, and Wilbur Wood, for that matter. Collins played 500 more games and had more hits, runs, 2Bs, 3Bs, HRs, RBIs, BBs and WAR with the Sox than the A's. He played 1670 games with the Sox, which interestingly enough is the exact same number as Baines played with the Sox yet he accumulated more than double the WAR of Baines. I just can't see Baines being more worthy than Collins.
