  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 11:59 AM) In this day and age 300 wins is way bigger than it ever was historically with things like 7 man bullpens and the 5 man rotation. I'd go as far as to say 250 or 275 should be the new 300. Agreed. We may never see another 300 game winner. I'd say the only guy in baseball now with a decent chance is Sabathia (191 wins - age 32). Who knows if his body will hold up for another 7-8 years.
  2. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 11:03 AM) I never implied that he wouldn't make it. I'm just saying that he doesn't deserve it. 300 wins is 300 wins. I don't care what any advanced metrics say, 300 wins (without PED issues of course) is a ticket to Cooperstown.
  3. Not a bad read, but does the author know that Kenny isn't the GM anymore?
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 08:13 AM) ESPN is unwatchable. If you crave NFL coverage, there's a channel for that. If you crave NBA coverage, there's a channel for that. If you crave MLB coverage, there's a channel for that. If you crave NHL coverage, there's a channel for that. ESPN is getting worse by the day. (EDIT: save NBA Countdown - best show on that channel that thankfully leads into actual basketball games) This 100%. I never watch ESPN except for Monday Night Football or if the Sox or Bulls are playing on there. I honestly can't remember the last time I sat down and watched Sportscenter or Baseball Tonight. If ESPN wants to provide the quality of coverage and analysis that MLB, NBA and NFL networks provide they desperately need an overhaul. They've had the same old people doing the same old shtick for 20+ years (I.E. Berman, Scott).
  5. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 01:15 PM) Next year Glavine, Maddux and Thomas are eligible. Gotta think Biggio goes in too with them and that's the four, right? Cooperstown is an easy drive up for me, but I have a buddy living there for another couple years so it'd make staying for Thomas even easier. If the voters decide to reward Morris in his last year like they did Blyleven than there could be five. Or they could decide to give Frank the shaft.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) I'll give you the same question I've given other people. How do you know when they started juicing? Mark McGwire was quite thin in the 1980's, and yet he had Canseco injecting him with all sorts of ass-shots to turn him into a 40 HR hitter. Until he tested positive, people kept believing Palmeiro, because his body hadn't exploded like tetrahydrogestrinone did, and then he tested positive for a steroid that helps but doesn't explode your head like THG. Why do they get a presumption of innocence for what they were doing in the 1980s, particularly when it's all but proven that they were cheating in the 90's? Your're right, there is no way to know for sure. Some guys its pretty easy to make an educated guess. A guy like Sosa who goes from 30-35 to all of the sudden hitting 60 while his body ballooned in proportion to his home run totals rising is easy to figure out. Same with Clemens. His career was over in the late 90's, then all of the sudden his head explodes and he's back to winning Cy Youngs.
  7. I kinda go back and forth on whether ANY roiders should be in the HOF, but lately I've been leaning more towards letting guys like Bonds and Clemens in, but not guys like Sosa and Palmeiro. My rationale on it is that steroids did not make Bonds and Clemens HOFers, they just made them into the top tier of HOFers. Steroids did take guys like Sosa and Palmeiro who were better than average ballplayers and help them forge HOF careers. Don't know if that makes sense to anyone else or not, don't really care.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:58 AM) Bonds did it. As we all know, he had a little help. I highly doubt Konerko goes that route.
  9. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 08:04 PM) It all depends on whether he was hurt after June or became old all of a sudden. If he was hurt and is now healthy, then I feel like he'll play another 5-6 years and challenge for 600. Watching him hit early in the year was truly a work of art. He figured the game out to a degree that most never do, truly taking what the pitcher gave him. He was fast-tracking to the HoF the last few years and I hope it was just some injury. Only guy that can hit .400 and I want to see it I really hope this post was made in jest. Paulie only has a slim shot at 500 homers, forget 600. He's also never hit over .313 in a season, how the hell is he gonna improve .087 on his average in his late 30's?
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 08:35 AM) Interesting. I wonder if they will be subject to the can't get a signal that is rampant in a lot of parks. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8826859/...t-deal-t-mobile This article goes into a little more detail. The old "land lines" will still be there for managers that elect to use them. I just can't imagine some of the old-timers whipping out S3s to make a call to the bullpen.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 08:12 AM) About 1/3 of the votes have been publicized, and at this pace Biggio is close, but no one will get in. http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/newsst...ollecting_gizmo Rock just keeps getting closer and closer every year. Makes me believe he will eventually get in. He may lose votes next year because of the 10 person rule. With The Big Hurt, Maddux, Glavine, Kent and Mussina all getting on the ballot its getting pretty bloated. Makes me think they will take some votes away from guys like Rock, Lee Smith, Larry Walker, etc.
  12. It also literally regards the actual baseball that was used. Somewhere in the 1910's they introduced the cork centered baseball which was able to be hit farther and harder. This combined with the arrival of Ruth completely changed the way the game was played. Instead of relying on speed and strategy, teams starting looking for sluggers who could hit the ball over the fence.
  13. Seems more and more like a return around the All Star break is realistic.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) How so? Doctoring a ball gives a pitcher an unfair advantage. That's an extra pitch to his arsenal that other pitchers don't have. It also makes his other pitches more effective. What's the difference? For one thing, the talk of Perry started because of the "ethics" part of being a HOFer. Taking anabolic steroids without a prescription is a federal crime, putting a little vaseline on a ball a couple times a game is not.
  15. I don't think he gets there. Highly unlikely he hits 34 this year and I just have a feeling that this is his last summer in a Sox uniform.
  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) How can you police a pitcher from throwing a spitball? Nobody ever stopped Gaylord Perry from throwing doctored balls. Charge the mound, throw at him when he's batting. To compare doctoring a baseball to taking steroids is pretty ridiculous in my mind.
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 7, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) Don Drysdale & Gaylord Perry openly cheated, yet ethics were ignored with their election. My opinion on this has always been "cheating" between the lines is "ok", cheating outside the lines is not. The players can police the game themselves when its done between the lines (HBP, hard slides, etc.) but how do players stop others from using steroids?
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 09:03 AM) Saw a projection that had the Sox as a 77 win team right now. I think that's a fair assessment. No way we lost 8 wins this offseason.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 08:56 AM) Melo waited for KG after the game last night... http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id...oss-sources-say I'm guessing at least a one game suspension coming for Melo. Altercations on the court, not so bad, in the hallways/locker rooms, worse, but outside the arena by the team's bus? Stern won't put up with that.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 08:32 AM) I watched more of the Bulls game than I did the NCAA title game. The Bulls seem to be coming together. Boozer on a hot streak is really big for them. It gives me a real scoring option until Rose gets back. I've been most impressed with Boozer's defense these last 3 games. The best defense I think I've seen him play in a Bulls uniform. He's starting to drive to the hoop a lot more too instead of relying on his fadeaway. His sometimes spotty free throw shooting has gotten better too. 8-8 last night. These is the Boozer the Bulls thought they were getting and it's really nice to see. If Rose can come back and even be 80% of what he's capable of, dare I say this team may have a run in them? I would love to see Marco get more minutes and maybe even get Cook in for 8-10 a game just to have more of an outside threat. That would mean big time points in the paint for Noah, Gibson and Booz.
  21. Another nice win for the Bulls, even if it was the lowly Cavaliers. Six guys in double figures, Boozer and Noah with Double-Doubles. 40+ points from the bench. Not a whole lot to complain about.
  22. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 5, 2013 -> 09:28 AM) As Bulls fans, we can't really complain. True.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2013 -> 08:09 AM) Didn't Lebron go like the entire month of December or something ridiculous like that without a foul called on him? I think it was 5 or 6 games but still ridiculous. I can see why after last night tho. He mugs people and they just won't call a foul.
  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) So lets kick this thing off with a little rumor nugget about the upcoming Playstation console: http://kotaku.com/5972787/sony-patent-coul...ext-playstation So, two things I have read rumor wise about this console is 1: it will not be backwards compatible with PS3(and will force you to get those games on the PS Network) and 2: it will destroy the used game market with playstation. If this above patent comes to fruition, your game will only work with your console. No going to friends houses with your games, no renting. Your console, thats it. Don't remember where I saw it, but I believe Microsoft is doing a similar thing with the new X-Box. All games are gonna have a key to be able to play it similar to computer software. There would still be a used games market, but you would have to purchase a new "key" for a few bucks to be able to play the game.
