I've never been one to donate to charities a whole lot due in large part to the fact that I don't have a lot of money. I do however donate almost every time a cashier at a store asks for $1 to such and such charity and do frequently dump change into the Salvation Army buckets and the Ronald McDonald house buckets. I think I might be more apt to donate if the CEOs of these charities didn't make so much money. It makes me sick to see the CEOs of these charities pulling in million dollar salaries. Makes you wonder how much of your money actually goes to the cause and not "administrative fees".

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 09:45 AM) I never said DeAza will flame out. I said (implied) that there's more of a chance that he will than Bourn will. Bourn has put up consistent numbers over a longer period of time. Why is that so difficult to understand? I guess I just don't get the Michael Bourn obsession. He's barely got a .700 career OPS and will cost 12+ million more than De Aza. No thank you.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) That's great and all, but the question is not who is most likely, it's who would you like. The answer doesn't have to be based totally on realism, although it would help if it was somewhat realistic. Having someone hit 500 with 80 homeruns annually would be nice, but not realistic. No your question was who would you like to reach their fullest potential. Danks fullest potential is not a perennial all star.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 08:55 AM) Well, there doesn't seem to be any actual Sox news being made at the moment and I'm hopeful that somehow Mr. Hahn will give us a big time Christmas present, until then I'm just trying to satisfy my boredom at work. So......... If you could have Santa grant your wish for any current player in the Sox organization to suddenly realize their fullest potential and become a perrenial All - Star in 2013 who would that be. I'll choose Jordan Danks. I'd love for his great defense to be a staple in the Sox lineup for many years. If he could man centerfield and be a 280 - 300 avg. hitter with some power and speed it would allow the team to trade one of their other outfielders for help elsewhere on the diamond. I could get into say a DeAza - lf, Danks - cf, and Viciedo or Rios - rf. I gotta go Beckham. Viciedo's up there too, but I think he has a better shot of realizing his potential then Beckham. I don't think anybody really expected Jordan Danks to become a big star, so I haven't been upset with his development.

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 13, 2012 -> 01:59 PM) Here's the situation...right now, the Sox are no better than they were at the end of last season. In fact, if anything, they're worse. (Flowers for AJ is a downgrade, Keppinger for Youk is a "wash", losing Myers, etc.). Meanwhile the Tigers have added Torii Hunter and have Victor Martinez coming back, the Royals have improved, as have the Angels, Blue Jays, Red Sox, etc. The Sox either have to make some serious upgrades/acquisitions, or they need to trash what they do have and rebuild. IMO the AL Central in winnable, I don't want to rebuild...not yet. I don't buy the Sox being worse. My guess is that Flowers will be every bit as good as AJ this year. Youk was pretty blah last year when it mattered so I don't think there is much of a downgrade there especially considering Keppinger should be a better defender. De Aza and Viciedo also have their first full year under their belts and should improve. You also failed to mention our rotation. Last year we lost Danks for basically the whole season and we started two first year starters. I think a rotation this year of Sale, Peavy, Danks, Floyd and Quintana should be pretty studly. That is if they keep Floyd which I'm guessing they don't. Even if they don't make any more moves, which is unlikely, I think the team is better going into this year than they were last. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2012 -> 08:39 AM) He is supposed to be Viciedo Bad at 3B. I think he actually might be even worse. -
QUOTE (RZZZA @ Dec 8, 2012 -> 09:51 PM) Marco is really coming on strong, at least his scoring is. It kinda worries me that he's a black hole, doesn't seem to assist much... and wtf is up with Taj? 2 points 3 turnovers 3 fouls in 11 minutes, are you serious bro? Don't make us look dumb for giving you that contract And Noah with 9 turnovers, da f***? I didn't watch the game I'm just looking at this boxscore Taj got two technicals for arguing the same call and ejected in the second. I thought it was a bunch of crap. Refs were pretty one sided all night.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:58 AM) Ellsbury wouldn't be a bad pickup, but it's tricky adding to a position of strength. A hiccup or regression for Ellsbury and you have gained nothing. I don't think we have the chips to get him anyways. Boston is looking for young cost controlled pitching which we really don't have to trade. It would take some sort of three way deal. -

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:42 AM) Does anyone have a good idea of the left-handed hitters that are available via trade? As Rock said, the outgoing package could be Floyd, Quintana, and Thornton...that doesn't open a spot in the lineup. So, maybe it's Floyd, Quintana/Thornton, and Rios/Viciedo. Could the Sox actually be in on Hamilton, and the trade frees up cash and brings back prospects? Ellsbury is supposedly available for pitching, but that is certainly a long shot. -

QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 01:04 PM) I have none either. On the slippery slope of letting in people who disgraced the sport, he's the first I would. You do make an excellent point that he fully, without any equivocation, knew the consequences. Personal bias aside, I would put in Shoeless Joe before either of them. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ Nov 29, 2012 -> 10:32 PM) Rose doesn't deserve to be in the HOF. The rules of baseball said that if you gamble on the game you are gone. It was proven he gambled on the game. There is no discussion. There is discussion about the PED users. I believe it is ethically wrong (and more important medically wrong) to use them. However, there was no rule at the time against them. I wouldn't vote them in but that's more a personal view than rules of the game. I hear people say all the time that steroids were not banned, but that's just not true. A quick google search gave me this nugget. "On June 7, 1991, commissioner Fay Vincent sent a memo to each team and the players union that stated: "The possession, sale or use of any illegal drug or controlled substance by Major League players or personnel is strictly prohibited ... This prohibition applies to all illegal drugs ... including steroids." The seven-page document didn't cover random testing -- that had to be bargained with the union -- but it did outline treatment and penalties." QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 10:49 AM) I know, but temporarily, there will be no more twinkies and ding dongs. This bugs me, because what if I want to buy twinkies or ding dongs after they shut down even though I haven't bought a Hostess product in 3 years? I'LL HAVE TO BUY LITTLE DEBBIE INSTEAD THE TRAVESTY! THE HORROR! Meh. I prefer Little Debbie anyways. Wonder why? Two words. "Banana Twins"

Sox' Sale finished 5th in AL Cy Young voting

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 08:18 AM) Rodney had one of the most, if not the most, dominant seasons a closer has ever had. I think 1 first place vote is justified. Rodney certainly had an amazing season, but I'd say Eckersley's 1990 season was better. 48 saves, .60 ERA, .614 WHIP an insane 18.25 SO/BB ratio. Only walked 4 batters in 73 1/3 innings (one was intentional). I'm never a fan of voting for a reliever as Cy Young. As remarkable as Rodney's season was, he still "only" had a WAR of 3.7. Amazing for a reliever, but barely over half of what a typical Cy Young winner has. -

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 9, 2012 -> 06:37 AM) I think you're right. But, I can dream, can't I? It would just be so nice to actually have a potent left handed bat, with a high OBP. Dunn in the middle of the order is just not good enough. If he's still on the team, I hope that he bats somewhere lower than fifth. Maybe they'll go after someone less expensive than Hamilton. I just saw how much he's asking for in free agency. Yikes!!!! It's your dream to have Sanchez starting at 2B and a AAAA player starting and leading off in center? Those two black holes in the lineup would more than make up the difference between Hamilton and Viciedo. -
As I am a big Leinenkugel's guy, I had to try their new Snowdrift Vanilla Porter that just came out over the weekend. I have to say it is quite tasty. I'm not big into vanilla, but it wasn't a real strong vanilla taste to it.

I've always hated receiving thank you cards, whether it be from a wedding or graduation or whatever. They've become such a formality that they really have lost any meaning. If it were me, I would offer to buy him a beer or two. That's a better thank you than a piece of paper that's gonna be thrown in the garbage as soon as you turn your back.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Oct 31, 2012 -> 12:19 PM) Alex Rios: $12.5M - also 2013:$12.5M, 2014:$12.5M, 2015:$13.5M club option ($1M buyout) Adam Dunn: $15M - also 2013:$15M, 2014:$15M Jesse Crain: $4.5M Matt Thornton; $5.5M Alexei Ramirez: $7M - also 2014:$9.5M, 2015:$10M, 2016:$10M club option ($1M buyout) Gavin Floyd: $9.5M I would be very surprised (and very disappointed as well) if 3 or more of these 6 salaries are still scheduled to be paid in full by the Sox come January. IMO 3 need to be gone, I would hope for at least 4, and in a perfect world we have dropped 5 of the 6 with prospects coming back and with money spent on either a longterm really good FA and/or shorter term reclamation type deals. I think we can definitely contend next year regardless of what we do over the offseason since we're going to have pitching and we'll probably have defense too, but IMO it would be a big mistake to not continue ahead in the same direction we've gone in since the dreaded "all in" debacle. You expect to still be able to contend if we dropped 5 of those 6? No chance. -
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 10:30 AM) In before Y2HH goes on another "you sheeple" rant I think Obama carries 8 of those 10 swing states, losing FL and CO. Most Election prediction sites and Las Vegas has Obama as the favorite to win but that University of Colorado model that has never been wrong has Romney winning big Romney 330 to Obama's 208 to be exact, could they be that way off? Mittens would need to win a big chunk of blue states, what gives? Yea after reading that Colorado model, they are out of their damn minds. There is no chance that that happens. They have Romney winning WI, IA, OH, and MN? No chance he wins all four of those states especially Minnesota. Obama is holding a comfortable lead there from every poll I've seen.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 10:09 AM) hey man, i want Romney to lose. but Romney does clearly have momentum. The momentum he had has leveled off and the numbers are starting to level out. The way its looking, Obama should take Ohio. If he does that, it becomes damn near impossible for Romney to win the election. In my opinion there is a better chance of an Obama blowout than there is of a Romney win.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 10:06 AM) If Romney gets the same result as the Scott Walker recall, he wins. I just don't see Democrats not voting Romney because of Scott Walker. Anyways, as you said, WI is pretty much a consistent Democrat win in Presidential elections. So I don't have WI going to Romney, but if that stuff starts happening it's going to be a blowout win for Romney. There are severall reasons why Walker won the recall. 1. It was a boughten win from out of state money. 2. The Dems had no real time to campaign. and 3. The Dems did not come up with a strong candidate. Had someone like Russ Feingold ran, he would have won easily.
