  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) the problem is most people here are probably too young for strange brew. it didn't have the staying power of a caddyshack or blazing saddles. Yea I'm only 28 and a lot of people my age just don't know some of these "classic" movies. Luckily I have a father that introduced me to all the old movies and old musicians that he liked as a kid and I've done my best to introduce my friends. He never forced me to watch or listen to anything, but did his best to make sure I knew it was out there so I could experience it for myself. If I ever have kids, I'll do the same.
  2. Some of the movies me and my circle of friends quote on the regular are: Holy Grail Animal House Caddyshack Breakfast Club Detroit Rock City Outside Providence Major League Strange Brew and maybe it's just me and my friends weird sense of humor, but the Cable Guy is probably number 1 on our list.
  3. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 11:45 AM) True, he did become a better pitcher after 10 years in the league but for his career his average season was a 14-12 record and he was really never even considered for a Cy Young. As stated, he really wasn't a winning pitcher. Great and dominating stuff but not necessarily a pitcher. His career is just a great example of why W/L record should not be that important of a stat for a pitcher. Take his 1987 season, he went 8-16 with 2.76 ERA. That's not exactly his fault, he just played on a lot of really bad teams. Had he played for the Yankees in the late '70s or the A's in the late '80s who knows how many more wins he would have and I guarantee you at least a couple Cy Youngs. He has the lowest hits/9 innings of any pitcher in the history of the game. Bottom line is, I'll put a guy with 7 no hitters, 12 one hitters and 18 two hitters on the mound any day of the week against any team.
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 27, 2012 -> 02:32 PM) Why are there Cardinals in the lead post? QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 27, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) http://www.museum.state.il.us/exhibits/symbols/bird.html I had wondered myself. Did not know the Cardinal was the Illinois state bird.
  5. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2012 -> 12:05 PM) I would think that April-May would get more games on WCIU due to overlap with the NBA and NHL seasons. That would seem to make sense but looking at the schedule, April had 4, May had 3, June had 2, July had 4, August has 5 and Sept/Oct has 7 including 3 in the final week. So 13 total in the first four months of the season and 12 total in the last two. I've never understood why games were on WCIU anyways. Doesn't that severely limit their market?
  6. "Jump"- Van Halen. Better than what I was expecting being born in the mid '80s, but still a pretty crappy song by an overrated band.
  7. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Aug 27, 2012 -> 10:25 AM) Ugh, another WCIU game. Always seems like there gets to be more WCIU games the later into the season we get. There the only games I can't watch and it sucks.
  8. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Aug 27, 2012 -> 08:54 AM) So one team had a 10 inch strike zone and the other had a two foot one. That's calling it biased. How is that not saying that one team is being given an advantage? I cannot believe people refuse to acknowledge what he is saying. I'm not saying he's accusing him of being on the take. That's pretty much exactly what you said.
  9. Not sure why, but that Dennis Rodman FG percantage champion plaque makes me laugh.
  10. QUOTE (Spiritinthesky @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 04:09 PM) Neil Young is the man, along with Dylan, he's always done whatever he wanted and made great records, (most the time). You ain't kidding there. Young has a new album out in October and Dylan has a new one September 11th. What a great couple months for music fans. From the sounds of it, both albums are going to be fantastic. I have tickets to see Neil Young/Crazy Horse at the United Center in October and I can't wait.
  11. QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 12:24 PM) Do you know Of a site where we can stream it.. I'm in the same position as you Seems like every time I find one a good one, its shut down soon after. Sometimes you can find the game by just doing a Google search for "free Sox Yankees stream" or something similar to that. If I come across one for tonight, I'll let ya know.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 11:16 AM) Also, reasons like tonight are why I hate blackouts. A far superior media outlet (in terms of video quality, graphics, etc) is nationally broadcasting our game, and we get the choppiness of WCIU. Also, I like getting the perspective of the Sox from the broadcasters other than Hawkeroo sometimes. I think the Sox have been on Sunday night baseball once this year? At least you will get to watch it on WCIU. I'll be blacked out because I'm "local", even though there is no way possible for me to watch this game. I guess MLB wants me to illegally stream it for free over the internet?
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 19, 2012 -> 11:41 AM) Would have thought Youk would be closer to 1500 career hits...just goes to show you how difficult and elusive that 3,000 mark is. Unless you start out at 19 or 20 like A-Rod, Griffey, Cabrera, Trout, Harper, etc. Even then, you have to stay healthy in your 30's. Ichiro probably would have done it (and he did adding both JPL and MLB) had he begun his career in the US. Isn't Michael Young the next strong candidate to make it? Seems strange to think of him as a HOF candidate due to his poor defense and playing in Texas, but it would be next to impossible to keep him out at that mark or above. I don't think Michael Young has any chance at 3000. He's soon to turn 36 and still needs 800+ hits. Watching him this year, the guy looks like he's just about done. I think Ichiro has a better chance at 3000 than Michael Young.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 17, 2012 -> 12:59 PM) It wouldn't even have to be 140, but even a 200 strike out pace would give him 40 more balls in play. We are talking what, 5 or 6 more homers probably? 1 out of every 7 balls Dunn puts in play is a homerun, so yes based on that your numbers would be correct. It's really hard to say how many would be taken away by cutting down on his swing to try and put those balls into play though. He does have quite a few 370-390 foot homers this year that maybe would be turned into routine fly-outs.
  15. QUOTE (Lillian @ Aug 17, 2012 -> 11:10 AM) You raise a very interesting point. In the interest of clarity, are you suggesting that if Dunn could put the bat on the ball with the average consistency of most good power hitters, that his home run totals would necessarily decline? Konerko, Pujols, Cano and the youngster Trout are all guys who hit home runs, but don't strike out 1/3 of the time, which is exactly what Adam has done since donning a Sox uniform. I contend the opposite. I assert that because of his extraordinary size and natural strength, that a very high percentage of his fly balls are going to leave the yard. Logically, the more fly balls he can hit, the more homers he will have, and the more times he hits the ball, the greater the chance for him to hit one of those fly balls, which in turn might go over the fence. Moreover, no one is considering the relatively few number of doubles, and singles that he hits, also a direct result of the high strike outs. That means that he is not giving his team mates much of an opportunity to drive him in. Consider this: Dunn has scored an incredibly few 69 runs, for a guy with 34 HRs and 81 RBI's. Think about it this way; he has only scored 35 runs, which he didn't drive in himself with a homer. When you factor in the Sox' high team batting average with runners in scoring position, it becomes quite apparent that unless Dunn hits a homerun, he doesn't do much offensively to help his team. He is batting in front of Konerko, Rios and A. J., all of whom have had great years offensively, and yet Dunn has only scored 35 times when he didn't drive himself in with a homer!! As an aside, it's another good argument for moving him down from 3RD in the order. Look, I'm thrilled with his "comeback year", and the fact that he has hit a lot of very meaningful homers, but it seems a shame that he can't seem to do better than his .200 batting average, with all of those strike outs. Even his OBP is relatively low, when you consider all of the walks he takes. Just because he's having a good year, doesn't mean that it couldn't be significantly better. I think that he could be one of the best hitters in the game, if he could just figure out a way to make contact more often. Actually, the higher avg. and OBP, with fewer strike outs, which he produced in the N. L., would be fine with me. An average of .260 would look pretty good about now, wouldn't it? De Aza only has 4 more runs scored and he's our leadoff hitter. 69 runs with almost a third of the season left is not incredibly few especially for a guy lacking speed. Sure he's only hittin around .210 but I would venture a guess that the shift cost him .030 on his average minimum. As you say maybe he should go the other way. That would cut down on his power numbers significantly. If it was as cut and dry as you make it seem don't you think that he or the coaches on the staff who have spent their entire adult lives in professional baseball would have figured it out and not some random person on a message board? Bottom line is Adam Dunn is payed to hit home runs, not slap singles. He knows what it takes to make that happen and that's what he's doing.
  16. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 17, 2012 -> 02:50 AM) I heard 460, 462 and 469. So who knows what's official? Hittrackeronline.com is the most accurate. They actually use the physics instead of just kinda guessing. They said 460 on Dunns and 470 on Flowers. I dont know if there is actually an "official" distance. I think as far as ballpark records and stuff go they just kinda say whatever they want.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 01:32 PM) Yes, they will block it out in LaSalle even though you won't be able to get the game on TV. Sorry. This is something that really irritates me. I live in the very SW corner of WI. I am close enough to be considered in the White Sox territory, but obviously too far away to get WCIU. I pay close to $100/month for satellite and $120/yr for MLB.tv yet I still have to miss 1 or 2 games a week because of MLB's stupid blackout rules. They really need to look at those rules because they are completely bogus.
  18. QUOTE (Wagz @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 01:04 PM) Possible MVP season for him and Griffey was KILLING it also that year. Frank did win the MVP that year.
  19. QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 06:32 AM) Love the signing of Lopez, but those 2008-2009 that was back before the steroids testing. No where near that player They were testing for steroids well before 2008.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 07:43 AM) Supposedly they measured that at 469 feet? What? That seems about right to me. The spot where it hit is almost directly above the center field wall, just really high. At the time the ball hit there it's basically falling straight down. Maybe only would have traveled another 15 or so feet had it been allowed to hit the ground. Still their saying it would have been 69 feet past the center field wall, which is a long ways. Hit tracker had it measured at only 460 and their usually right on the nuts.
  21. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 11, 2012 -> 09:46 AM) Isn't Morel out of options ? I say Johnson. Morel was all ready optioned once this year. Multiple call ups and options in the same year only count as one.
  22. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 11, 2012 -> 09:44 AM) You have to be on the 40 man roster by the end of August to be eligible for the playoffs correct? Right now, we only have one position player (Morel) in the minors on the 40, which is pretty insane. I would think that would be a hugr concern for the front office. If we have a serious injury in September, we'd basically have no fallback options as of now. Also, Johnson and Jackson are unlikely to clear waivers if the callup is indeed temporary, which makes things extra complicated. I still think you send Olmedo down until September and keep one of the two power bats the rest of the way. I'm pretty sure that anyone in the organization can still be called up and eligible for the playoffs regardless to whether they were on the 40 man so long as they were with the organization prior to the end of August and are replacing an injured player that was on the active roster. I think it does require league approval tho. I'm pretty sure thats how it goes.
  23. QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 03:46 PM) Just out of curiosity how many new albums do you guys buy during the year? (And you know what I mean by "buy") I'm at 19 right now. But I have some more nerdy music friends who get 50+ sometimes... Between new CDs and new vinyl, I'm probably around 75 for the last year. That's probably about my average over the last 3-4 years since I finally got a job where I have a little disposable income.
