  1. There has always been a fine line in NASCAR concerning exactly how much influence sponsors are getting for their money. That said, Tony owns the team he drives for, so he his sponsors know damn well what he is going to be doing in his free time when they pony up the cash.
  2. Latest figure I heard was 3 of 80 Ferguson police officers are black. If they aren't getting enough black applicants then they need to recruit more aggressively. Look inside St. Louis city, or even look to other midwestern cities to find qualified black officers. You're just asking for all kinds of problems if the demographics of the police force are that much out of whack with the city.
  3. The first big mistake was that the Ferguson police force was not built to resemble the community. Ferguson is 75% black, and I haven't seen exact numbers on the police force other than it being referred to as "mostly white". There is built in tension because there is such a disconnect there. That isn't to say that white officers can't build relationships with the community and serve them. From time to time you see stories about white police officers in various communities stopping to shoot hoops with black kids or help them out in different ways. That apparently wasn't happening here. I've seen eyewitness accounts that claim the kid was shot in the back. Forensics will very easily prove or disprove that claim, but if it's true, then that should be an easy murder charge for the officer. Also, if it is true then I think the state needs to take control of the local police department and clean house.
  4. Black people have a right to feel however they feel about this incident and their situation in general, but responding to an event where a black person was unfairly profiled as a criminal by committing a bunch of crimes is 100% counterproductive in every way.
  5. Yes, but everybody it talking as if they are experts on how NASCAR should deal with the situation and how they shouldn't let their drivers drive at dirt tracks, etc. NASCAR has done a pretty good job of growing their sport in the last 20 years and doesn't need advice from the peanut gallery.
  6. This is a hilarious thread. My guess from reading all of this is that none of you have ever watched more than 2-3 NASCAR races in your life, if any.
  7. By far the #1 reason for the demise of ND football transitioning from the Holtz era to the Davie era was the firing of offensive line coach Joe Moore. OL is a very underrated part of a football team, and Joe was absolutely the best there was. Look up how many ND OL got drafted from 87-97 compared to 98-08.
  8. A lot of communities don't have the space and/or money to have separate facilities for the 9-10 and 11-12 age groups. The 12 year olds are going to have to continue to play on the same fields as the 9-10.
  9. Yeah, Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon all died the same week. Then Billy Mays threw the 4th one in for free.
  10. So my wife and I have been on vacation since Sunday, staying in a hotel in St. Charles, which is about 15 miles NW of Ferguson. I have to say I've watched more local news on my hotel room TV the past three nights than I thought possible. Our hotel is adjacent to a retail complex whose parking lot was used Sunday night as a staging area for St. Charles county police departments to caravan into Ferguson to provide support. If that wasn't unnerving enough, last night the same retail complex was rumored to be one of the targets, as the rioters were pushing to move on from Ferguson to "riot and loot in white areas." Out our 7th floor window we watched police and SWAT vehicles stream into the complex and not leave until almost midnight. I never saw anything on the news about anything actually happening there, but it was still quite unsettling.
  11. Just remember: Merkin = UM grad = dolt Boyer = ND grad = awesome dude (but s***ty basketball player)

  13. Dunn is cursed and any team that acquires him is doomed to miss out on the postseason.
  14. That would be cool if the Sox could do that. Somebody puts in a claim and the Sox just give the other team the entire bullpen.
  15. Sox used to have their AAA team in Vancouver. That's pretty close to parts unkown.
  16. Regardless of how much in the wrong Hamas and Israel are, every time Hamas starts hostilities they end up losing territory. I guess eventually they will either figure out some other way to solve their problems or end up with no territory left.
  17. Yeah, but there's an alternate who didn't get to play because Dufner decided to tee off before withdrawing. Some guy does that back in 1991 and we never hear of John Daly.
  18. Well, there are two very different kinds of non-alumni fans. There are people who, even though they didn't go to the school, grew up rooting for the team because of geography and/or family connections. I'm cool with people like that. Then there are people who had absolutely no connection to a school like FSU but suddenly in 1993 they are given a national championship and people are buying their stuff. I have no use for those people.
  19. I know a family who is from East Lansing, MI. The parents are both MSU grads. Two of the four children went to MSU. The youngest went to that other big school in the state, but he remained an MSU fan his entire 4 years of school and beyond. His sports fandom was entirely separate from his academic pursuits.
  20. I rooted for area high schools that were in a different class than my own to do well in state tournaments. Not that much different from a Miami student rooting for OSU or a NIU student rooting for UI.
  21. The Cubs know they aren't getting Hamels, but by putting in the claim they make damn sure that the Cardinals, Brewers, Pirates and Reds don't get him either.
  22. Anybody seeing any chatter at all about Sox players being on and/or clearing waivers?
  23. I see Sanchez as a high-floor guy. He seems at worst to be a lock to be a Leury Garcia with a better bat, with at least a chance that he hits well enough to start at a middle infield position. Johnson is a guy who, with his speed, can be an indispensable part of a lineup if he can maintain an OBP over .360 in order to use that speed. But he could also be a bust because he doesn't seem to be strong enough defensively to have utility guy as a backup plan.
  24. There are nearly 70 million people living in 'Big Ten' states, excluding Maryland and New Jersey. Now, there are some other schools in those states with sizable fan bases (Notre Dame, Pitt, Cincinnati, Marquette), but an overwhelming majority of those 70 million people are fans of a Big Ten team. There are less than 6 million living alumni from the 12 schools, so yeah, most of the fans of Big Ten teams did not actually go to those schools. There are a lot of MAC, FCS, DII, DIII and NAIA schools in Big Ten land, and most of the people who went to those schools are also fans of a Big Ten team.
