  1. If you take away the fact that this is Abreu's first year outside of Cuba, in a vacuum I would take a 28 year old 3B producing like Donaldson over a 27 year old 1B producing like Abreu. The one thing that gives me pause is the belief that because Abreu came here from Cuba, he may have more room between his current production and his peak than the typical 27-28 year old. Also, the Sox have a good 3B in Gillaspie and another potentially good one in Davidson, with no real 1B prospect behind Abreu. But yeah, if I'm starting a team from scratch and have to choose Donaldson or Abreu for the same money, it's a close decision.
  2. Offensive value is measured in terms of "runs created" and defensive value is measured in terms of "runs saved" and the two values carry equal weight. A player who creates 40 offensive runs and saves 0 defensive runs is equal in value to a player who creates 20 offensive runs and saves 20 defensive runs.
  3. (1) OBP contributes a little bit more to offensive value than SLG, and right now Abreu's SLG is what is off the charts. His OBP is good, but not elite. (2) Abreu has played in fewer games than the other three, and WAR is a cumulative stat. Also, none of Donaldson, Heyward or Gordon were available for the Sox to sign for 6/$68M
  4. Poor Rhode Island. Isn't even big enough to get its own line.
  5. Yeah, I should have said "active roster" instead.
  6. ^^^ Summary: Israeli civilians are dying because Hamas is hitting civilian targets that have no military value. Palestinian civilians are dying because Hamas is placing them with military targets that they know Israel is going to hit in retaliation for Hamas hitting civilian targets.
  7. Because that's where their Triple-A team is.
  8. For one day, yes, then he's back to working for the Sox.
  9. Possible, yes, but extremely unlikely. All involved players would have to clear waivers, or be included as a PTBNL. Danks is likely to clear waivers, but we don't really know what other teams and players were involved in the deal.
  10. Your "arb clock" starts the first day you are added to the 25-man roster. If he came up September 1 he would accumulate 28 days of service time. If he starts next season on the roster, those 28 days won't matter. If he starts next season back in AAA, then the cutoff to call him back up and avoid "Super-2" would be pushed back by 28 days.
  11. I agree that he is the second best overall hitter on the Sox, and that kind of guy needs to be batting in front of Abreu and not behind him.
  12. Gillaspie definitely has a place in the lineup, but not 4th. Need at least a 20+ HR guy batting behind Abreu.
  13. This would fit with Rock's story about tons of activity going on with Sox suits on Thursday but no deal.
  14. Well, unless it's a walkoff grand slam with the game tied 3-3 and you stop at 2nd base. Then a HR is not a HR.
  15. Jones has actually been better vs lefties in his career than righties. Not sure Robin would have ever used him that way, but it could have helped.
  16. Yeah, I just checked the Vegas line and the Sox are -infinity.
  17. Or they could just pick up his option. EDIT: Nevermind. This year was his option year. He is FA at the end of the season.
  18. An AL team should have a roster spot for a guy with LGarcia's skillset: can play several positions well and can run fast. The problem is that the Sox are misusing him because (1) they have a 3B with a very severe split differential and (2) they are using a roster spot for a backup DH. If you construct the rest of your roster well you can have a guy like LGarcia on it but not need to start him more than 5-10 times a year.
  19. Yes, because they have to put the letters in alphabetical order.
  20. Did you know that people who are OCD don't call it OCD?
  21. You have to wait for THE PLAN to play itself out. Right now the Sox are in the process of acquiring all the left handed pitchers. Every single one of them. Once that is accomplished, left handed hitters will be fighting each other off to sign with the Sox so they don't have to face said pitchers.
  22. Facebook is down, so it's up to you guys to entertain me until it's back up or 4:00, whichever comes first.
