In the last six games, the Sox are 3-3 with a run differential of -24. By your calculations, that makes him one of the greatest managers ever, to pull off a .500 record out of such a Pythagoreanly horrible team.
Yeah, you're potentially on the hook for every single contract on every guy that you claim, so teams have to prioritize, and I guess nobody else prioritized lefty relief. That explains why Washington got the claim, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense that the Yankees just let him go.
They probably have. Waiver lists and claims are not released publicly, and teams aren't supposed to give out the info. There seem to be more and more "sources" in recent years, but the lack of information still doesn't mean that the Sox haven't done anything.
CDC is a very secure facility, plus this is not an airborne virus. It's not like you're going to catch ebola if you are out working in your yard somewhere between the airport and the CDC and the guy sneezes while going by in the car.
What each of these is owed (assuming that club options are not picked up but vesting options vest):
Hamels: $7.5M this year plus $96M from 15-18 (That's a lot of money owed, but he probably gets claimed)
Papelbon: $4.33M this year plus $26M from 15-16 (He might get claimed)
Ruiz: $2.83M this year plus $17.5M from 15-16 (He probably gets claimed)
Byrd: $2.67M this year plus $16M from 15-16 (He almost certainly gets claimed)
Utley: $5M this year plus $12M in 15 (He almost certainly gets claimed)
Rollins: $3.67M this year plus $11M in 15 (He probably gets claimed)
So yeah, while all these guys are expensive, for the most part they are producing near, at, or above what they are getting paid. I would think Papelbon has the best chance of clearing waivers. I doubt either gets through the NL, but I don't see any reason the Sox shouldn't put claims on Ruiz and Utley.
Those are full season stats, whereas the debate is whether or not using glasses if affecting his performance. We are going to need a larger post-glasses sample size before we can know for sure. If the premise is that glasses are affecting his performance, then his BABIP pre-glasses doesn't mean s***.
